You've described exactly why Silent Hill II is my favorite game of all time. The worst kind of demons are the ones we create for ourselves. I would also put the original Deux Ex up there on my list, followed closely by Half-Life II and the first Ultima (that one's more about context than anything else). I also have a special (probably irrational) fondness for Max Payne, and I've been really enjoying Dragon Age a lot -- probably more than any other RPG so far.
