Best free is Twitterfon, best paid I dunno, I use Tweetie, its pretty great but it has its fair share of bugs.
I really like Twinkle, especially its location based features/link to tapulous friends, and its free!
TwitterFon is free and awesome. I don't see anything in Tweetie or the others that is going to make me want to pay money for a Twitter app. Personally I found Twitterific's UI to be a bit ugly (and they stick ads in there), so I prefer TwitterFon.

I have tried all of them now. Even the most expensive ones. I really like the paid version of twitterfon. But remember that we all have different tastes.
I've had: Twitteriffic Twittelator Pro Tweetie Twitterfon and maybe a couple more Twitterfon has now won its place ... works great, fast, slick and covers most of the functionality you'd want about 95% of the time. Tweetie and Twittelator Pro are my other faves for more advanced features
Tweetie is awesome, its what i NOW use. i used to use the free ones, but tempted myself to try Tweetie, and ive never looked back.
