yeah, i knew that, but those were the ones that cost 600 dollars, and besides, werent the earlier ones prone to freezing up or something?
If you wanna play old games, buy an old console. You should have one anyway if you love those games so dearly. The PS3 has a decent (and growing) number of RPGs. It'll be the only decent way to experience FFXIII. Backwards compatitibily is always nice, but it's not 100% expected. Consoles are supposed to sell on the strength of their current library. RPGs are still being made, so without a new console you're not gonna see any.
Old consoles break, or wear down, and the older they are, the less replacements there will be. It would be so much more convenient if you had a current console that could play games for the previous systems in the lineup so that you could continue to play the games you love, even if you cant find the original console anymore.
Games seem to continually be rereleased nowadays. Like, you mentioned Katamari Damacy. There's a new Katamari out which features most of the levels from that. That's not really a rerelease as much as lazy development though.
Alas, that is the way of the world. Until technology gets better the only sure way to "emulate" old games is to include all of the hardware of the old console in the new one. For example the Wii includes all of the hardware the Gamecube had, which is why the emulation is 100% perfect, but none of the N64 hardware, it's all run from an emulator and so some VC games may end up performing slightly differently. The PS3 includes all the components of a PS1 ('cause by now it's old, cheap and a lot smaller), but if you wanted to stick a PS2 inside there as well you'd just be ramping up the price even more, and then you'd complain it's too expensive. Eventually tech should be good enough that we can just emulate it all through software, but with each new generation it'll get harder and harder to do. Unless of course we get to the point where we no longer need hardware on the latest consoles and it's all updated entirely through downloadable software, but that's nano-technology stuff... still a long way off. ...went off on a bit of a tangent there.
You know, I just want to say congratulations to you all for having a discussion about consoles without a flame war starting. You have impressed me.
The Xbox isn't just for FPSes, it has plenty of RPGs to choose from with more to come. Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Enchanted Arms, Eternal Sonata, Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Tales of Vesperia, The Last Remnant, plus Western RPGS like Mass Effect, Fable II, Dragon Age: Origins, Oblivion and others. Don't forget FFXIII is coming next year as well The original Xbox was mostly FPses which is why I hated it, but the 360 has probably the most diverse library out of the three. PS3's with no backwards compatibility don't cost 600 bucks.
You need to get Animal Crossing City Folk, Even though I bought it, and haven't played it for months, It makes me feel like....HAPPY!
I agree with this. I had no idea they stopped making PS3 backwards compatible... Mine works fine with PS1 and PS2 games. Technology is always marching forward. There is no reason newer technology needs to be forever backwards compatible. Maybe 1 gen backwards but more than that doesn't make much sense to me. It's a nice to have but I think it impedes progress in a general sense. Take care of your systems and they will last a long time. All my original consoles (NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, Gameboy color) still work fine. Besides, basically everything up to PS3, X-Box 360, and Wii can be emulated, very well, on any modern PC and most Mac's. That's what emulators are for- preserving games and gaming history/legacy. Edit: oh yeah, for Christmas you should get Resident Evil 4 for Wii if you don't have it
Yeah, but then you have to be careful not to get anything too recent because theres a fine line between innocent retrogaming and piracy, when it comes to emulators..
Agreed. My rules of thumb- I don't pay for software twice if I can get around it, and I have no scruples on this. And I don't emulate a game unless I own the original. Besides, I don't play emulators to discover "new" games on NES, SNES, PS1, etc. I don't see why anyone would want to do that. I like new appstore games for my iphone and new PS3 games for when I'm at home. The games I emulate, I've already owned, played, and mostly beaten. I play them for nostalgia and because they are familiar favorites and classics. I have no inclination to discover a game I missed for Super Nintendo and emulate it on my iPhone- it's honestly not the same enjoyment.
Im a little different, in that i like to play Japanese-only games, especially translated ones. It can be a treat to play the original Famicom Wars or Fire Emblem (before it was ported to DS), or play all the old games based on animes i like, such as Sailor Moon RPG: Another Story.
