I've got a dual boot of Windows XP and Ubuntu. I use Ubuntu for web browsing (even less viruses than OSX, although you would have to be a complete moron to get one in the first place), getting free equivalents of Mac and PC software, and for doing school and work projects (Ubuntu's text, spreadsheet and presentation tools are better than Office '07, and they are free). I run Windows XP (SP3) because it is basically the ultimate operating system. Hardly every any freezing or problems (unlike the crappy Windows ME and Vista), tons of Windows-only applications, and video games.
I'd never even heard of Ubuntu before reading this. I looked at it, and it looks cool, but I'm happy with Mac OS X (10.5.4) (Leopard)
OSX, because its great, and I don't play games on my computer so the low game compatibility isn't an issue Only complaint is that I wish Logic 8 could host VSTs without having to buy a wrapper...
I've got OSX leopard on my macbook (for basic stuff, and video editing) And then a bootcamp partition of Windows XP (For gaming and such) I'm running tiger on a mac desktop as well, but I find that computer is too slow (only .5 GB ram )
Been using OSX exclusively for a few years now. PC gaming has become less and less interesting to me over the years, especially now that every PC game worth playing is either an XBOX 360 exclusive franchise or eventually gets ported. The money I would have spent upgrading my PC gaming machine has found its way in to an insane home theater setup, which just makes playing the 360 that much better. The only thing I use a Windows VM for is the D&D 4e Character Builder. I could probably getting it running in Crossover if it wasn't for the ridiculous amount of .net dependencies it has. I can't complain too much though because dealing with Windows is a decent trade-off for not needing to spend an hour coming up with a new character sheet. I used to keep a Boot Camp partition around for Steam, but after getting bored with TF2 and having played Counter-Strike for over 10 years, I can't say I miss it too much.
The skull and crossbones. And I have Vista/Ubuntu Dualboot. Used to have the best version of XP ever, XP Ultimate. It's illegit, but it was amazing.
It's not an image. I use OS X 10.4.11 on my Power Mac G5, and OS X 10.5.6 on my Mac mini, which I use for iPhone development and have as a backup computer just in case. Although I connect via VNC and run it in a window, so technically I'm always using my Power Mac. --Eric
Does it still require all kinds of wpa_supplicant witchcraft and editing xorg.conf to get a usable install on a laptop?
lmao, that seems to be how most laptop linux installs seem to end- "WiFi doesn't work, sound kind of works, and my display isn't the native resolution of my LCD. Other than that, works great!"
Yup. I didn't notice anything to do with sound or res, but still. Mandriva worked right, but it sucked for being Linux. I'm going to try this new Portable Ubuntu and see how it it. Just install it on an external HD, and I'm ready to go.
I've got vista just because it came on my computer lol, though i'm thinking about getting a mac mini to try out iphone game development
