IMO it's their 4th best album (ANatO, NiME, IFtOS before it in this order), so I really enjoyed it. Also the best album of the year I think (and only the new Star One has a chance of beating it, as the new Stratovarius comes out next year).
Dream Theater ftw! Had to get that out of my system. I love their music, although some songs are better than others. They also were an inspiration for at least part of my 2 favorite bands.
Which ones did they inspire? Also, check out Ayreon. Compared to that project, DT looks like a 3-year-old boy throwing rocks at a xylophone.
That's kind of crazy, those are my favourites in the exact order, only I would put SFB before AtEoT. Star One is pretty sick. Friend got me into that crazy ass Space metal album, but I havn't heard anything else. That Album was something else. lol
Star One is a project by Arjen Lucassen, same guy who is responsible for Ayreon, Stream of Passion, Ambeon and Guilt Machine. Checking out Ayreon and Guilt Machine is worth it for sure (like the fifth time I said this in this thread today), SoP is female fronted progmetal while Ambeon is some kind of weird ambient stuff.
I know that Mike Portnoy was The Rev's biggest influence, and ended up saving A7X from not finishing Nightmare, which would have been a REAL shame. They also inspired Between the Buried and Me, something is which is pretty evident just from listening to their music. And I'll give that band you suggested a shot. Nice analogy, btw.
You have a.. wide taste (though in a very different way than mine). Anyway, I wonder if you'll like Ayreon, so post some opinions.
Yeah, as long as it's some form of rock, I have a pretty wide taste in music. Just started listening to Age of Shadows, and it's a pretty sick song so far! Original and completely bada** so far.
Booch: they are really different. My favourite is The Human Equation, so check song from that or 01011001 (awesome title eh?). Also be sure to listen to the whole thing, as it has a (surprisingly good) storyline. Somerandomdude: Happy about that. If you like that, go on randomly I think, it won't get much weirder (except for a few songs...). : D
I actually went and listened to the folk bands that you listed. Not a huge fan of the first one you mentioned, but I'm loving Elvenking! That's just the kinda stuff I was looking for.
Nice I will check it out then. I usually listen to whole albums unless they completely suck 4 songs in. lol
There are some bands (Between the Buried and Me, Avenged Sevenfold) that I listen to by album, and some (Zebrahead, A Day to Remeber) that I listen to by songs. It feels like some are set up to be played as a whole, while some are more or less collections of songs put out at the same time.
Yeah I mean don't get me wrong I don't always have time to listen to entire albums (like on the road, between stuff) In which I listen to just songs but while I am on my 10 hour grind at work I pop in an album and get to crankin.
It's simple for me, I listen to a concept album as whole and other albums by song. Anyway, I'm tired so I'm off for today. If I can't sleep, I might check back, but gnight guys.
I always try to listen to albums as a whole, at least for the first listen. Concept or not, musicians put some thought into how their songs are arranged. They're trying to conjure up a certain feeling or emotion in the listener with the order the music reaches them. At least... good musicians do. If I were to record an album it more than likely wouldn't be a concept, but I know how I'd want the listener to feel at the start, middle and end of it. Quick example: Blackwater Park by Opeth. By no means a concept album, but damn if that isn't the best closing song to an album I've ever heard. It just wouldn't be right in any other position.
Yeah, I'll do that if I know I have a lot of work ahead of me. I literally ran through 3 albums in one day while trying to do a project... The music was great, but the project was hell. Like I said, it depends on the band for me. Some of them really change a lot over the course of one album, or the album just feels like it's almost a whole song broken into parts. Check out Colors by Between the Buried and Me. The whole album connects from one song to the next, and listening to the entire album all at once is a great experience.
So I listened (and am currently finishing) the Human Equation. I have to say, definitely one of the more original projects out there. I really like it man! Thanks for the suggestion!!!! Edit: This Human Equation album is a shitload deeper than I thought. I listened to all 20 "Days" finally. I get the story now, and absolutely love how he chose different people for each emotion in the coma, or at least I think. Or at least that's what I gathered (Like Michael Akerfeldt for fear or being scared, someone for the voice of reason and pride [Didn't pick out who they were]) and James LaBrie being the main character. And the chick singing is his wife, right? That is seriously genius. Edit 2: @SomeRandomDude @Balu` You guys death metal fans at all? Ever checked out Bloodbath (Opeth singer, Drummer for Edge of Insanity (for the first album), dudes from Katatonia. Check out thier stuff it's pretty br00talz. It's supposed to be some supergroup, but they mix up the members during all 3 of their albums hahahah
