and to add I've completed several gameloft games and I have to say that MC2 just blew me away....THIS IS A PHONE PEOPLE?!!!! Dont forget that! to have a COD multiplayer like experience on my phone is incredible....dont forget, less than 10 years ago we were still playing snake on our green screened Nokia 3210.....What more do you guys want?! Would you be happer if it made you a cup of tea too?!!
The thing is, copying a game that is already successful, and mostly on another platform, is hardly going to rob that game of success because it's already successful. For example, Gameloft's version of Gran Turismo is hardly going to affect sales of the original Gran Turismo or Gran Turismo 2 which are years old now and nobody who owns a PS3 is going to buy Gameloft's clone on the iPod instead of Gran Turismo 5 for the PS3, are they? Maybe as well as, but not instead of. If Sony (or whoever) released an official port of the original Gran Turismo for the iPod or iPad, I'd buy it. But they won't. So, hey, thanks Gameloft! Wishing death on a game company because you disagree with their marketing policy or dislike their products is infantile at best.
All the dude is saying is he's sick of the aping of existing games. Gameloft does great quality, some of the best in the AppStore, and it's just irritating to see them avoid any original idea whatsoever. They would have used the Halo script in NOVA if they could have gotten away with it. Dude just wants some originality in his AAA iPhone games. Like Galaxy on Fire 2. Sure, that game has plenty of influences too, but it's not outright copycat by a long shot. It's got it's own soul for sure. That said, I have a lot more respect for Gameloft than I used to, just seeing how freaking good they are at the copycat game. Black Pegasus plays like a dream; its MW2 on my phone and I'm really glad I spent $7 on it. Gameloft needs innovation more than we need Gameloft though. Once big devs start dropping infinity blades on us pretty regularly, Gameloft will go extinct if they don't carve a more innovative reputation for themselves. IMO.
Maybe portable console games, but not console games. Harbor Master is a "clone" of Flight Control. In my opinion, it's better than Flight Control. HM sold well, but Flight Control did much better. If the actual developers won't port the game, why shouldn't Gameloft make a clone so iPhone-only gamers can enjoy it?
The only Gameloft game that's truly impressed me so far is Spider-Man. It is fun, fluid, varied, has perfect controls, and just feels incredibly cinematic. btw I haven't played MC2 yet, but I will as soon as the next Gameloft sale rolls around.
Yeah i loved spiderman as well! I was well happy when i got the black suit! but trust....once you start playing MC:2 you will never go back to spiderman...blows it waaayyy out of the water!! Multiplayer is just amazing! best multiplayer game I have played on my iphone by far!!
Gameloft found a nice little niche, so why mess with success? It's not hurting their sales any. As for unreal engine games running them into extinction, it won't happen. There's always going to be a market for clones, and gameloft fills that nicely.
I feel the liscensing of the Unreal Engine is too expensive for your average indie dev. That is why we haven't seen any other dev announce a game which utilizes said engine so far.
If there was no Gameloft: You would be saying: Damn...i wish i could play Grand theft Auto/Halo/Call of Duty on my iphone or even a clone, cuz im tired of repeatedly masturbating off of this iporn.... Grow the **** up. You act like every Army game is a clone of Call of Duty. I guess Battlefield Bad Company 2 is just a clone of COD or The Godfather is a clone of GTA. I dont see anyone complaining about those Plants vs Zombies clones.
You may be right. But I'll be less inclined to buy Gamelofts version of a game I've played before if I can spend my dollars on a new app from Epic or Bioware, just for example.
If I recall they weren't charging at all for the engine. I'll have to look that up. But they sure as hell don't want any dev stealing their thunder first.
Epic will take a percentage off the back-end. Royalty fees. Which is what Apple does. If you are an Indie dev, it's still not worth it if you are surrendering, say, 40% of your profits to a combination of Epic and Apple. You won't see any Indie devs utilizing this engine. Epic and only Epic will ever use this engine to create iOS games.
Gameloft was created by the founders of Ubisoft. They saw a very profitable future in mobile gaming. The Unreal 3 Engine is very impressive, but don't think that gameloft isn't aware of this. They are probably working on a new graphics engine for their upcoming games. It's also important to remember that gameloft still has the perfect formula for the control-system on their FPS games, not to mention the extensive experience in developing for the iOS. They will always have the advantage over other developers and their line-up of games is still the best in the app-store (GOF2 is the only exception). The leaders of high-quality gaming won't be slaughtered over-night because the big developers are starting to play catch-up.
Everybody here is making good points. I'm just saying Gameloft is on the verge of seeing some serious competition. I think GL is here to stay, but if they wanna stay on top, I also think they'll need to reevaluate their strategy.
Thanks for the clarification. And it depends; if they use the engine, make a good game and it sells well, their next game may sell better, etc etc. All I know is if I got 60% royalties I'd be one happy writer!
I understand what you're saying, but by adapting the business plan they are, they've shielded themselves somewhat from competition. No one does what they do with the success they do. I don't see them changing anything in the short or long term, other than optimizing their own engine.
So true. And as they say 'you can't argue with success' and so far they are very successful with what they do.
How would the app store look with no gameloft? Let me answer, basic and plain. Most of the games in the app store feel like they are mobile games. Gameloft games don't feel like that. Gameloft is actually giving the app store a good name, if you don't like it go back to your 2 min games.
I totally agree with you ALL THE WAY! I like playing their games a lot and I don't see the other big companies doing it as well for our favorite portable handheld unit! When I read that one Bozo's comment I was ready to spew a big wall of text, but you pretty much summed it up for me! Right on!
