Magic Hands from Nitrome is becoming a bit popular at the school I'm teaching at. It's not as big as Clash of Clans though.
I can't remember the name of it (someone is going to have to help me out): some crazy doctor turns into this weird creature with one eye and three arms, and you navigate a 2-D world by placing its arms on surrounding structures. For some reason I want to say it was made by a team at Microsoft. It was released at least a couple years ago.
Mindcraft seems to be the go at the local schools in Aus! and Drop the chicken seems to be a fav for the older ones. Altos world and the new Monument valley is going off also.. Cant go past cut the rope and angry birds though but wish they would remove the ads on some of these games they are way 2 long...
Top games my friends and I are playing We love Minecraft, Cut the Rope, Alto's Adventure, Drop The Chicken, Real Racing 3 and Leo's Fortune.
A middle school teacher commented how around a year ago, he asked a couple of his classrooms how many of them have Flappy Bird installed. Nearly everyone raised their hand both times.
