Does the bible mention what happened to the boat? Considering this thing would have been about the size of an entire city you'd think there was a wreckage somewhere.
I'll try to answer this and I can see where it might be hard to understand it. But see, Darwin was actually correct. He never came up with the idea of evolution, he came up with the idea of natural selection, which are two completely different things. So because of natural selection different breeds were created. Therefore, Noah only needed two elephants, not two Indian, two African, etc. This dramatically cut the number of organisms going on the boat. In reality, only a pair of animals from each genus was needed and they became the species we know today. Note: I'm just trying to answer the question through a Biblical point of view. If you don't believe the Bible is true then that's fine, but please don't scoff at this answer.
That'd still make for one hell of a short time for all those species to have suddenly appeared. Noah must have waited for the elephants to give birth and immediately built a couple more boats to ship them off to their respective countries so that natural selection or evloution could split them according to their new habitats. ...and then a few thousand more boats for all the other animals. That dude worked hard, who needs UPS when you've got Noah shipping animals worldwide at the speed of sound?
The crust of the Earth was in a different position at the time. Animals migrated and went their separate ways and as the climates changed where they went, the bodies of the generations after the original organism changed to be best suited for their habitat. This created the different breeds of animals.
I'm still finding the time to be slightly off. Evolution, natural selection and the movement of the Earth's crust are quite commonly accepted as being processes which take tens (or even hundreds) of millions of years. Put it down to Noah and we're talking mere thousands.
Listen as much as I do enjoy discussing my religion I know that Christians on the Internet are notoriously slammed for their belifs. Although this has been a good discussion I know that others will come and rip my beliefs apart. What I believe does not agree with secular biology so I know by trying to answer this question it won't end nicely.
Fair enough, but if you ask me the slamming usually occurs because Christians back out of discussions rather than explain the questions put to them. If they had genuine answers they'd probably get a lot more support. Avoiding questions is what Scientologists do, and the Heaven's Gate cult before them.
It's true...I know they don't want to hear it...because frankly disillusionment is painful, but tough shit!!! Please christian peeps, read the allegory of the cave. It will take you five minutes.
I've only read a little bit of this thread, but I can't believe how arrogant some of you are. Just because you think someone is wrong is no reason to call them idiots and try to tear down everything they believe. What kind of person does that? There are very good arguments for both religion and atheism. Saying that it's obviously one or the other then demeaning others for believing the opposite is ridiculous and makes you the idiot. The world cannot, no matter what anyone says, be tied up in a quaint little explanation. If you want my advice, don't ever listen to anyone who says otherwise. Sadly, that rules out most of humanity.
To be fair though, being wrong plays a fairly large part in idiocy. Maybe it doesn't apply in this topic, but if someone is a genuine idiot you'd expect "getting things wrong" to be a major part of their repertoire, so in that case calling them an idiot would probably be quite apt and truthful, if a little mean.
Just because you think they're wrong, doesn't mean they are and certainly doesn't mean you're right. So, calling them an idiot is absolutely wrong. More importantly, it solves nothing. It makes problems worse. Do you think you're going to change someone's beliefs by calling them stupid? Or, are you just trying to demean them and look superior? Think about it.
A loving person. No one wants someone to waste their entire life living in ignorance and disillusion.
I think you missed what I was getting at. I was just saying that idiocy and being wrong go hand-in-hand, so putting the two words together isn't quite as absurd as some people like to point out. I wasn't talking about judging people at all, and I certainly wasn't talking about religion or anyone in this topic.
Calling a person an idiot in general is one thing (spend some time in New York and you'll see what I mean), but I'm talking about this discussion about religion and people calling other idiots for what they believe. I'm not staying in this conversation much longer. These things go nowhere. But they're only wrong according to you. According to them, you're wrong. My point is, it's completely futile and all you're doing is making matters worse. If you think you love someone, go ahead and tell them everything they know is wrong because you said so and call them an idiot and see what happens. Good luck with that.
religion is dangerous. respect yourself and respect others. if youre heavy into one of the handfuls of religions out there, please use your head and take the guidance of your respective religion with a grain of salt. religion should be supplementary, like a therapist. religion should not be a way of life. think of all the problems and walls that religion brings. all the people that have died. imagine all the things that could be or could have been accomplished in science, communication, and worldly convergence, without the confines and segregation of others that religion brings. youre not better than anyone else. your religion is not better than some other religion. people who believe in a different religion or live in another place should be treated like a brother or sister in this world that we all share. i hope other people that are agnostic like me feel this way too. respect others, even those that need guidance from religion. but remember how dangerous the person is who lives by the sword, kills with a bible in his pocket etc. it frightens me to think that there are people so mentally engorged with their religion wrapped around their brain that they think theyll go to "heaven" with virgins waiting for killing non-believers, or that a person has the "god given right" to take the life of another person based on their religious goal. its absolutely insane and i hope people start to realize how dangerous and scary religion really is. when youre a kid, you are brainwashed into religion and its difficult to wean yourself off of what penalties and prospects your religion has hammered into your brain. please just respect others and yourself and use your brain. the best thing you can for yourself and others is to educate yourself. educate yourself in other religions, educate yourself with as much of everything as you can all your life. noone is better than anyone else. have dignity, stability, a worldly communal acceptance, structure... everyone will be better off
The great thing about ignorance and disillusion is you have no idea it's happening The one pro I can see for arguing against religion is that... it seems to work. Science has nearly always argued against these so called truths and as a result, religion is less popular these days than it has ever been. There was a time when nearly every single family said a prayer before eating/going to bed but now it's almost a rarity. The more science and technology evolves, the less people find they need religion to shroud their fears, so hopefully it'll eventually lead to a decline in religious persecution and of course, all those utterly idiotic religious wars. You'll notice I accused people of being idiots just there, anyone still gonna argue against it when it comes to mass slaughter of innocent people?
No. They are wrong according to naturally observed fact. The bible has been proven wrong on many occasions, such as the world having 4 corners, and the age of the Earth being 6000 years old. Scientific fact has taught us that the world is not flat with 4 corners, but instead has a sphere-like shape. Also, carbon-dating and layered ice samples from the arctic have proven that the Earth is much, much older than 6000 years. All these facts have physical, tangible evidence.
