Are you referring to me? If so, I'm not "ranting" about anything. When I see a question directed towards me, or a comment that I don't agree with (like yours), I respond to it. It's as simple as that.
When does the gameplay in Canabalt get harder? I've played up to 10252m and I barely saw a difference.
not only that, you can't really blame anyone else because you assumed there was more to the game. It's been said over and over again: The Flash version is pretty much exactly the iPhone version. I can buy the arguments that pricing is relative and there is such a thing as being relatively expensive in any market. But, of all games, there is no way you can blame anyone else that you were somehow bait/switched on this game. arn
Let me explain my thought process. I started this thread because I really liked the online version, and I thought Canabalt would be a fun game to play on my iPod. After some discussion and debate, and after playing the online version for about 3 days (20 minutes each day), I bought it. Because of work, I'm usually on the move during the week, and I don't have time to thoroughly test games on my desktop. I was hoping Canabalt would follow the tradition that most games of this type follow, and throw in couple of surprises or gameplay changes after I reached a certain score, but I didn't, and this is why I complain. I admit, my disappointment is my own fault. I should have read more reviews, or tested it more.
I don't see what all the hubbub is about. I played the flash version, and it didn't take long to figure out what the game was all about. It was only once I couldn't stop thinking about playing the game when I was no where near a computer, that I realized that I was gonna pay whatever they charged. I, for one, am glad that the price remained the same, so I don't have to feel that I should have waited for a price drop. A well made quality game, no matter how simple the premise, is just that (a quality game), let's treat it as such. Play the flash version, if you like it enough, you'll buy it anyway. I would hate to see anyone miss out on this gem because someone didn't think they got their money's worth. I would like to thank toucharcade.com for not letting this game slip by (but you guys are usually on top of things, so, no surprise)!
You go faster as long as you don't hit any boxes. Hitting boxes, however, is essential to the game, so as not to go too fast. The difficulty in Canabalt consists of having to constantly anticipate variations in the environment (not to mention the falling satellites). Some building gaps require a long leap, while others need to be hopped over or even fallen over without jumping as is the case with some window-equipped buildings (but you probably already knew that). So the challenge is really to simply be able to keep going and not committing a potentially "fatal" mistake. Again, this is probably things that you already know, but in case anyone was interested in a fuller explanation. Just keep running...
Holy crap - I just spent 30 minutes reading this thread. I can only imagine how much time some of the contributors have spent reading and writing to it. Some of them complaining about spending $3 on a cell phone game. To those people I ask, how much is your time worth to you? Allow me to state the truth, which has been stated time and time again, on countless threads no doubt: 1. Developers have the right to determine what their game should cost. 2. Customers have a right to determine if such a price is worth it for the experience they will get from the game. That said, the only thing I can deduce from all of the complaining here is that some of you think that the price is too high for this game. So, if the price was lower, say $1, you would not be complaining, and might have bought the game yourself. To those individuals who own an iPhone, I say... Are you F******** ****** ******* kidding me????!!!! You paid $200-$300 for a phone, and locked into a $60+ a month rate plan, and you think $3 is too high, but $1-2 is OK? Really??!!! To those individuals who own an iPod Touch, same as above - but take out the bit about the rate plan. Sorry for the rant folks, but the pricing complaints I read on these boards aggravate me so much. You don't think a game is worth it, don't buy it. As for my feelings about Canabalt? Played the flash version, loved it. Figured $3 was very reasonable for a fun, random game that I can play anywhere, anytime for a few seconds. Bought it launch day - still play it about once every day.
As I've said before, I used to get very carried away with spending, so, to stop this from continuing, I made a strict budget for myself. Yes, I have been complaining about $3, but not because I couldn't spare it, but because I could have used the money on other games, and gotten more bang for my buck. But whatever... It's really not that big of a deal. Some like the game, and others don't, and think it's overpriced. To each his/her own.
And that makes perfect sense. What doesn't make sense is why you've spent so much time reading and writing to this thread trying to drive that home. If you think the game is overpriced, don't buy it. There are many people who thought it was worth it. Really, end of story. as you've said, to each his/her own. I'm just trying to rationalize the amount of time that you and others have spent going back and forth on this topic, instead of playing the games you have, doing something else worth doing, etc.
Because lovely people like yourself keep giving me something to reply to. It takes me between less than a minute, to 2 minutes tops, to reply to a post.
Minimum wage in IL is $8.00 an hour. You've posted in this thread 26 times so far. Given your average posting time of 1:30 per post, you could have made $5.20-- Easily enough to pay for Canabalt, even after withholding for state and federal taxes. ...Not to mention over half your posts since registering here have been exclusively dedicated to complaining about the price of a flash game you could have played for eternity without paying a cent before determining whether or not it was worth $2.99. I just... wow.
Its worth it only since I know Adam Atomic and I think his efforts are worth the price. It's also a pretty cool game.
I spent $100 on getting my $800 laptop fixed last week. I'm not a cheap person. I just don't believe a simple jumping game with EGA graphics is worth a $1 more than Meteor Blitz. I haven't been complaining. For the last 15 or so posts I've only been replying. Take your post, for example. If you hadn't made it, I wouldn't have replied to it. And like I said a few times now... If you read through this thread, you'll see that I'm not the only one who thinks this game is over priced. Even some of the people who give Canabalt 5 stars in the app store think it's overpriced.
