man oh man you have probably never been to the steam forums ever. all that place is is blatant consumer rage, boycotts, troll hatred, nonstop "disappointment" posts, whinery over unfulfilled promises, etc. the left 4 dead 2 forum was especially nothing but spam about how the game is just not worth the money. i mean, this is nothing in comparison. your brain would explode.
No one is asking you to take anything away from Canabalt, but some of us are asking for some things to be added. A $3 game should at least have an online leaderboard (something that you've already announced), and a return to menu button. 1 or 2 additional obstacles would also be a plus. lmao
it is their best selling game of all time my friend! but get this, the reason why valve forums are so clogged with requests and disappointment threads is because valve actively addresses these things, and is in contact with their community constantly through direct personal e-mail. they're obviously a much bigger company though that is capable of turning around updates and meeting the needs of their fans. team fortress 2 is nothing but one nonstop fan service giveaway of goodies that will last gamers years, and was only 19.99 in a sea of 50 dollar games.
Is this really what you're going to take away from the analogy? The point isn't whether an outside observer wants to add or remove from the car, its that he wants his voice to be more important the the car designers themselves. I believe Adam tweeted long ago that he is adding all the things you're requesting in the next update.
But, eventually, who is going to be buying that car? Customer opinions should at least be considered. I actually like the people who pay for my services. And when they comment on a creative decision that I make, I first take their comment into consideration, and, if I don't agree with it, I politely explain why I disagree. I don't just laugh in their faces, and continue to give them less at an inflated price. That's very Microsoft-esque behavior.
The developer does not have to agree with every single customer who buys their product. One customer request does not equal all customers in a single voice demanding something. *edit* I think there has been plenty of "polite disagreement" in this thread, but that doesn't seem to placate anyone. If you think canabalt is not worth 2.99, and he politely disagrees - don't you still consider him wrong? In your scenario you are still wronging everyone you politely disagree with. *double edit* I think the real question here is, "how can you please people that can never be pleased?"
I'm not saying they have to. If you have absolutely nothing else to do, look through this thread. I don't think anyone has asked Adam to add anything unreasonable. The most popular request is an online leaderboard, and a couple more obstacles, and Adam has already said that he's working on this. Woot. Not entirely. I'll know after the update is released. I'm not that hard to please. Just add a leaderboard, a few more obstacles, and maybe a return to menu button. Or, lower the price by a dollar so that the price is proportionate with the other prices in the app store. The solution is quite simple.
I registered on the Steam forums back in 2004, but I can't go in there anymore. Just a ridiculous amount of retardation in there, it's quite shocking. But yeah it's the same, people posting all of their (mostly stupid) ideas for how to improve Valve games. Very frustrating to read it, so I usually stay away from there. For Canabalt, I really don't care about global leaderboards, the only content I would like to see added is a little bit more artwork. No gameplay changes, other than possibly, possibly more obstacles. But yeah, I think it'd be cool to see some of the alien vehicles a bit closer to the foreground sometimes. The touch of seeing the mothership in the distance after getting a certain ways is really cool, that's the kind of stuff I'd like to see a bit more of in this game.
Are you suggesting that the customers don't know anything, and that the only people with valid opinions are the developers? Don't forget... Without the customer, the developer won't have anyone to sell their product to. As I've said, I don't believe the developer should listen to everything that the customer suggests. However, he/she should at least consider the customer's suggestions.
Oh this is not settled yet. It would appear that shills have even infiltrated Apple, as Canabalt is currently prominently listed in their "Best Games of 2009" splash screen.
