What I mean is that it's just not my type of game, voted for that in the poll . To some it might be worth it, but for me I would only play it for a couple of minutes.
I voted yes, because in the real world this game is worth that and more. In the crazy app store world it's not though(when compared to similar offerings for the same or less). I decided to go with the real world Plus the consumer decides if it's worth it or not and based on how much this game has sold I'd say the consumer has decided that this game is worth it. So forget about me saying it's not I'm confusing myself now.
so essentially you'll love us for our money but take anything we say with a grain of salt? probably the first time i've heard a dev outright say it. many devs here bend over backwards for their fans, but it's always been evident that you're not that dev. ah well, just keep making more quality and i won't really complain.
Hi, The way I read that quote, nodoctors, was more that he can only bend over so far to make customers happy. Some people, no matter how responsive a developer is or how many updates they provide, will always find a reason for complaining. The mentality has gotten to the point, and this is not directed to you, that people want a PS3 or XBOX quality game for a dollar. Just not practical for developers to do this and this is what I got from the quote. It has nothing to do with not wanting to listen and fulfill requests, it is only when they beginn to be unreasonable. I would think this would be the same for any developer. There is no pleasing everyone, and apparently you are one that is not happy with the game or the developer. I do not mean to speak for the developer, this was just my take on the quote above. David
this is evident in the minigore update thread. the new version is like a whole new game because they made so many changes and additions. yet still, some people are complaining and giving it 1 star reviews because the feature they wanted isn't in it or they don't like 'this' one thing.
i agree its not worth $2.99 all the devs did was port the flash version. they would also get allot more sales if it was $.99.
Do you realize even if they doubled their sales they would still only be making 2/3 the amount of money they are now? I honestly am not sure how much more clear Adam could have been addressing the amateur app store economist crowd.
Haven't played Canabalt myself but I have to agree that it looks alright for a few minutes but definitely not worth $2.99 + tax IMO. The retro is cool, though.
if you've been here long enough, you'll know that the canabalt dev is not the type of dev to cater to the consumer. they've made it clear that they do what they want the way they want to do it, as they feel it is the most successful means to go about doing it. and they are, obviously, quite successful thus far. it's a bitter type of brutal honesty, but it's somewhat admirable coming right from the dev. so anyways, have you bought the game yet?
Hi, No disposable money till the end of this week and also suddenly discovered MinGore. Still on my list of stuff to maybe buy, never said I was going to buy it. Just was considering it seriously. Here is the quote: Been coming around here since earlier in the year, just registered last month though. I have a general feeling for developers around here, I just have a diferent point of view than you do. Not sure the angery customer approach works when requesting improvements to a game, especially when you trash the developer and tell them the game is not worth the asking price. Rudeness usually gets rudeness back. Not to say that you kiss their backside, but come on, the approach taken in this thread, to get the developer to improveme the game is completely backside backwards. From reading through thirty seven pags of this thread, one could see the current approach is not woking. David
uh i think you're confusing me for the posters who refuse to buy it, who are not fans, and are generally just trashing it for not having enough content for its asking price. but i forgive you, as it is apparent that you've entered this thread late and are somewhat out of the loop.
Hi, No confusion here. My post above was just partially directed to you. Also have read this thread from the beginning so, I consider myself in the loop, as you put it. Thanks for the forgiveness though, I guess. David
i would love for you to provide specific examples of how that post even partially pertains to me. i mean, as long as there's zero confusion as you say. to clarify, i haven't made any requests, other than for information on any upcoming updates, and then posting how i am pleased with the update coming in the pipeline.
Imagine there is a guy standing in a car factory. He owns a car made by that company. He stands up on a chair, and in his loudest voice says "I HATE WHEELS!! Wheels are SO STUPID you guys. I'm never buying a car with wheels again." What should the car company do? Stop putting wheels on cars?
hahaha that man is clearly no fan of cars! but again, i don't think this example actually pertains to me. it's more like if it was freedog and he actually owned a copy of the game. i'm not on some tirade against canabalt, i just want more! and to expand upon my post, there will always be different kinds of devs. you will have devs that bend over backwards because they want to cater to the audience, and there are those that don't want to compromise the vision of THEIR product for the sake of the audience, because they want to make the game they personally set out to make. there is nothing wrong with that at all, and i think both types of devs are very important in keeping the community happy. dev A designs their games around the fanbase, and dev B often creates very unique and excellent niche titles. can't really go wrong. bottom line is...canabalt needs more wheels! THIS CAR CLEARLY HAS WHEELS! btw classic episode. ah the homer...we barely knew thee. i love how he completely separated the front seat and the back seat so you don't have to listen to your kids while driving
Adam, everybody knows that cars turn out better then they are designed by the average joe instead of automotive designers! Edit: Screw you hodapp, you beat me to the homer punch.
I guess what I don't understand about this whole "Argh Canabalt needs more content!!!" thing is that the simplicity is what makes Canabalt so great. There's a ton of games on the App Store that share this same quality. Adding a bike for the dude to ride, an RPG style progression system, a rocket pack, internet coop multiplayer, a single player plot driven campaign, and Minigore references would make Canabalt a different game. Which raises the question-- If you wanted a game with RPG style progression, Minigore references, Pocket God tie-ins, and a dirt bike you can ride... Why did you buy Canabalt? This culture of "Well, this isn't the game I want but I'll buy it anyway and complain to the developer" that seems amazingly prevalent among App Store gamers is unique to the iPhone game scene, and a phenomenon I've never seen before. I mean can anyone here imagine someone buying Left 4 Dead 2 and endlessly writing angry emails to Valve because it doesn't have a car you can drive, complaining that there are only 5 campaigns you can go through, or how it should only be $47.86 because it doesn't have $60 of content? You could draw all the same parallels whiners here are drawing about how $60 for 5 campaigns is ridiculous when for the same price you could buy Dragon Age Origins and play the game for months without seeing the ending. I just... gah, my brain hurts. Also tsharpfilm I have to commend your tenacity to take your Canabalt rage on the road and head over to Adam's blog on Gamasutra. LOL.
nodoctors - that's cool, I was just worried I guess that I was coming across as some kind of scrooge mcduck dictator type, when ultimately for the stuff we make fan feed is just impractical...as opposed to something like Domain of Heroes, this MMO my friend Aaron runs, his sole job more or less is to gather feedback and figure out what to implement next. So yea you're exactly right, there are definitely different kinds of devs. Actually I take that back, I think it's really a project-based thing, not a dev-based thing, because we have a much more community-driven thing in the works for late next year or maybe 2011 (if we don't get beaten to the punch). It would definitely be the kind of thing that would benefit from fan feedback (i dunno about angry and demanding but still). So yea, I think maybe it's not so much about the dev but about the project... Sorry to go offtopic! I know this is about whether Canabalt is worth it or not We're working on fixing the very last (that we know of) bug in the update right now. Just waiting on a new source update to verify the leaderboard bug is properly quashed! I am curious if all the updates will change anyone's mind or not Of course, I'll take it all with a grain of salt...
