Well, on another note, I do think you can sing for more than 15 seconds. Since you are allowed to use 30 seconds of a song for certain purposes, parodying for 30 secs shouldn't be too bad.
Yeah, I think it's time to start harassing the mods I'm facepalming at the title right now because it is getting so old.
Here's the actual truth: you can't use copyrighted music in your app. Changing the lyrics as "parody" is only protected if the songs are used for satirical or comedic intent, especially defensible if the song itself is the target. Your application is not considered "parody." The "15 seconds" rule you hear in various forms applies to only to "fair use," which can be generally described as use for educational or research purposes, and NEVER covers ANY commercial use, ever. Your application is NOT "fair use." Using music in a TV show, film or game comes under the heading of "synchronization rights," and they are not automatic, and you are not legally allowed to synch copyrighted songs OR change the lyrics without the express written consent of the publisher, which will cost you money. Best case scenario when you get caught will be a C&D, worst case is an enormous fine running into the tens of thousands of dollars (and no, they don't care whether you made any money with the music or not, because that's not how the law works in the US). You will get laughed out of court if you try to defend your work as "parody." Imagine this... an ad agency takes a hit song, changes the words, and makes their own version for a commercial. When the publisher sues, they say, "hey, we were just writing a parody! For humor!" Uh huh. This is a good rule of thumb: if you're thinking of using someone else's copyrighted material in any commercial application, you have to pay them for permission. That's why copyright exists. Finally... the time to get a lawyer is NOT when you get sued, it's when you're thinking of doing something stupid and wonder if it might get you in trouble. And don't ask for legal advice on an Internet forum. Everything you hear will be wrong in some way or another. Get the advice of an IP lawyer before you use anybody else's work. Seriously. Don't be a schmuck.
