Noobie question here, but what's the reason for devs making apps for free that originally cost 1$? How do they make money that way?
This thread, by the guy who posts reviews on iTunes about how much he hates DLC with 50 exclamation points after every word. And by the way, to "originalcopy" above me: Making it free opens up more customers, which will spread the word about the game more. Then, they change it back to a dollar and people will buy it because they heard about it.
2 Words. 'Marketing Strategy'. When developers say something like this, you automatically think, "Oh, 1 Million downloads, must be a really awesome game!"... unless that game got really sucky reviews and ratings...
wouldnt the developer want to be proud of the fact that they got 1 million downloads? whether it was free or paid?
thats not the point the point is "1 million player cant be wrong!" when the people only would have got the game if it was free
Just because it's free doesn't mean people will just download it without even looking at it's name, description or screenies only the price. If it looked absolutely crap but was still free 1 million people wouldn't go and download it immediately. It shows that it has a high enough quality to attract the attention of tons of people among the sea of crappy free apps.
This thread doesn't make much of a benefit does it? Heck, if this thread had 1 million posts, I would totally buy it
What I don't like is when a dev jacks the price of something up just so they can mark it down the next day. For example: I saw an app on appshopper the other day that was marked down from $400.00 to $3. Then I checked the price history and saw that it was $1 two days prior.
I get what you're saying but it doesn't annoy me. I'd have to see an example of the specific app first to see how it's done. I think shilling and astroturfing is 100x worse and also believe it's gotten to the point where most big name iphone app developer companies do it and aren't doing a very good job covering their tracks.
For those of you who said they hate it... how would you prefer the developers to brag about having 1 million people taking the time to try your game/app?
