That's one way to look at it, but on the other hand, how many additional hours did you put into Binding of Issac chasing that achievement? Would you have stopped playing it even sooner if you weren't chasing it?

For me, I feel like hard-to-obtain achievements are something that encourage the player to put more time into a game, not something to make them rage quit. Of course it doesn't have to be an achievement, or a "blank spot forever" on 99.9% of players' lists. That seems to be the point of contention. What about unlocking a special hat (I could even see it now, "The Endless Hat", and the hat would be ridiculously tall or something. That seems very up Rocketcat's alley) or unlocking the chance of finding the rarest of the rare pets (Sonic is already hidden in there, what about unlocking Tails as a pet :p)

Yeah it got me to quit way earlier than I would have otherwise. It was a really arbitrary one, I think it was "never get hit once in the cave section" or something. I got the other ones like it just by playing, but didn't notice that one until they added the new and more difficult variants.

There already is a hat you get for "winning Endless" I think? It's that one big crown.

I'm in the middle of my first-ever play through of Binding of Isaac myself and I love it so far, I'll probably try to get that achievement a thousand times before I call it quits.

You're right about The Endless Crown, I forgot it was called that. It's the hat you get for reaching floor 100 of the Endless Shadow. I'm talking about some sort of reward for beating the full 999 floor run. Honestly I'm only flogging this horse because I kind of want to do another 999-floor run once the Paladin comes out, and it'd be awesome if there was a carrot to chase.

Oh maybe. Like either a hat or a little badge on every character you complete a 999 floor run with.

Just discovered a bug. If you kill Humphrey in the Gauntlet using the Mage's "flame torrent" attack as your final strike, the game will crash. Done it multiple times now to recreate the scenario.

Finally just beat the Dungeon with the 6th character. Getting through it as the Mage and the Adventurer was friggin hard! Getting past Amaranth was a pain with the adventurer since he has no dash, his weapon is fairly short-ranged, and he has no shield unless you find it in the emberforge. The shadow was super-hard with the Mage since her attack is based on energy, and the need to strike far outweighed having the energetic ability to strike! Had to get lucky with a few pets and perks before I finally beat it with Abby. Now onto the Paladin!! Bring it on, my body is ready!

Actually, I think It's easier for Abbie to defeat the shadow than for others. She has a lot of AOE swipes of good damage and range, and with her high item drop rate, she can just swipe through the hordes without concerning about the ammo. She can even chain swipes(which replenish energy) and normal attacks together to fire more frequently. But she can't afford too much miss since she's so fragile.

Congrats! I can feel your Amaranth pain with Adventurer's lack of defensive options. If I don't have a shield or dash item, I use his charge attacks to actually evade--- with Bitter Wind or Flicker's smaller energy consumption, Amaranth can be chipped slowly while dealing with the jumpy-slashy dudes. It's just very damn hard, though.

I'm only good with Mage with specific gears, but when I do have them, Gauntlet Shadow boss can get creamed in two to three attack waves.

Yeah. And luckily we get emberforge each floor, so there's a good chance that we can get what we need.

What are your preferred Mage forge upgrades?

Let me see... Fire upswipe, wind downswipe and upgraded version of the initial staff as a set, 'cuz that adds big critical chance I think.

    For individual upgrades,
Upswipe: stone, fire, ice are good AOE and easy to use, while the electric one being super powerful yet risky. Arcane sword is not as powerful as I want it to be, but I guess any move that can reflect projectiles has potential(I'm thinking about the blue boots of Rogue).
Stone upswipe has a long range and it helps to lure enemies outta rooms, and thus you may choose some shorter range staff upgrades. And itself deals decent AOE damage.
I'm not sure if fire upswipe deals high damage in total, but at least it has good range, and boosts your crit. chance.
Ice upswipe is quite an all-rounder I think. It damages, it stuns, and it gathers enemies together for your change attacks.
Electric deals HUGE damage while it stuns. I used to one shot an elite enemy with it (maybe it was a critical hit though). This one may need other skills to make it safer to use though.
I never play well when I choose arcane sword... maybe I need more practices.

Downswipe: a lot of people like earth and ice I think. While I prefer wind, ice and fire(is it?). The backdash one is tricky to use. I like wind and fire for the pushing back effect, which suits Mage's general game plan well, while fire also deals good damage, and wind nullifies magic. Ice absorbs magic, slows and lasts a long time- imagine that you have six rudimentary hourglasses which don't take up your scroll slots- this one's really good, and you can see a lot of people choosing this upgrade from the leaderboard. But it doesn't damage, so I still generally prefer fire and wind. Earth stuns, but doesn't damage, so I seldom choose. Yet again, a lot of people love it and score high with it. I guess that's because it keeps Mage from being killed by all those swift enemies, especially the thorn stealth guys and the elite thieves, whose attacks can easily end a Mage run in seconds.

Staves: I heard some people love salamander staff, but due to some graphical glitch on my device, I didn't use it much. And its range is too short for me to feel comfortable. Stone one is actually a decent choice. It shoots farther and faster than others, which keep Mage safer. Its charge attack seems quite situation dependant to me though. Electric one feels somewhat like the electric upswipe, you can use it in short range for big damage, while it still serves well as a range attack (and good AOE if the positioning goes well). Ice staff deals less damage while cost less energy, I guess it may theoretically deals higher damage with crtical hit oriented build. Its charge attack slows, which is quite handy, especially considering that it's a slow effect that doesn't cost ammos.

    adding to Makoto's post:

My best upswipe is the earth orb, it deals a lot of damage, best range, and can hit multiple targets. Fire is the second with a good range and multiple target AOE. If I don't have either choices, I usually go for the Manablade but use it as a sword combo weapon rather than deflect magic. As much as possible, I avoid the sparky one because of its poor range. Ice is good but I prefer the extra ammo count of the others for charging my staff for the Shadow boss.

Staff-wise, I prefer the triple-shot for bosses and raw power potential when it crits. Silver eye staff is my second go-to, as the basic with crit bonus is reliable enough on its own. Flame staff is only very good on upgrade II, but because of the graphical glitches on projectiles it's uncomfortable to use. Ice staff is very reliable EXCEPT on the last boss as it has a low DPS. I try to avoid earth staff with its charge attack.

For the downswipe, the linear push ones are my choices: Blazeweave is the best with its range, AND it also negates magic. Second is the wind. I avoid the others as I suck at using them.

I have a really (really) easy time beating the Shadow with Rogue or Cultist, since the backstab hits paired with my usual forge upgrades that focus on upping the chances of crit strikes usually only take 2 to 3 waves of enemies to finish the Shadow off. Warrior usually gets by on brute strength, I just use the Skullhack (double-headed axe) to breeze through the waves of enemies and then just chip away at the Shadow with throwing axes and power shots. Adventurer generally sucks I think most of us will agree, he's definitely the most underpowered character in the lineup, but with decent forge upgrades (shield and long sword? you can kind of turn him into a poor man's Warrior and beat the Shadow that way.

Hey Kepa, don't know if it's been mentioned but I've seen it a few times now.

Whenever I receive a call while playing and then go back to playing, the music and sound are turned off. The music turns back on when I get to the next floor but sound effects disappear.

Yeah unfortunately that bug has been known basically since launch in 2014. If you close the app entirely and re-open it, you won't lose your place and the sounds are back. Pain in the butt, but it's a fix.
