Of course I have. Seems like I have to beat the gold dungeon again to confirm if GC works properly...
WooHooII you are a son of a bitch! I was all set to take a break from this game until the first update but then you find an extraordinarily helpful bug which will be fixed in said update. Especially for the mage since it gives her over 20% more health and thats her biggest weakness. Only problem is you need to buy the Warrior gift, which I had previously thought sounded pretty pointless due to the infrequency of the potions. So I went ahead and grinded out the upgrade. Grind isnt really the right term, more like I finally beat the silver dungeon with everybody. Then after a LOT of attempts, I beat the gold dungeon with the cultest. Who I have decided is my favorite character by far. She has a really fun blend of ranged and melee attacks mixed with 2 great abilities and upgrades that often completely change her play style. Further her story line is really out there and pretty funny. Seriously though WooHooII thanks for figuring all that out and just HP in general. Thank you! Plus thanks for being so active on this forum and responding to my ridiculous ideas for the game. Thanks Ashflow for putting this together. You should change your signature to include a link to this. Actually somebody should put together a post with the wiki, the FAQ, and a link to some of the play through videos and maybe Kepa put it in your sig? Or put it on the first page? This is such an active thread its hard to find information. Here are my votes: Warrior- Skullhack (particularly useful for the gold dungeon I found), Steel Plate (I dont know how much it reduces the damage, but it sounds good), Thorned Heart (by far my favorite, you can move at full speed and the offensive part is awesome) Mage- Even though Ive beat the silver dungeon with her and tried the gold dungeon a few times, Im still a bit unfamiliar with her upgrades enough to have favorites and it sounds like Kepa is going to modify them anyway. The tremor garb is definitely helpful. Rogue- Dancing Grass, Slick kicks (I think this lets you take out the dogs even if they are charging. Dogs are my least favorite part of the silver dungeon, Oiled armlets (although I wish I knew how much faster they made you run) Adventurer- Sunnebrand vs Giant's Knife (I feel like Giants Knife has a slightly slower attack?), Tears of the Ice Queen, Orvar's Shield Spellsword- Phaseblade (rare to find though), Bloodboil Bands (really fun, see attached pic of me using it against a horde of zombies behind a wall), Spellsheath of the Hummingbird Cultist- The Twins, Ominous Black or Shining Orange, Belt of the Trickster vs Deathguard. Belt of the Trickster definitely the most fun, but I wonder if Deathguard is actually more useful for the gold dungeon. The only problem is I had a hard time adjusting my play style the few times I found it and would forget to activate it in time to avoid damage. I think you make some valid points as well as the other posters that said they just dont get why people like this game. I did not play Mage Gauntlet and was surprised at the initial glowing reviews because this game took me a while to get into despite having played RocketCat games and roguelikes before. The difficulty is really brutal. I compared it in my initial post (#1740) to being like an abusive spouse. I guess after playing it way too much maybe now I could consider it more like Mr. Miyagi from Karate Kid (plus if you wanna feel old the Karate Kid is now older in real life than the actor the played Mr. Miyagi in that movie!). Its like the constant dying is the wax on wax off. It seems so senseless at the time but you are actually (hopefully) getting better at the game. The silver dungeon now which seemed nearly impossible to me is now really pretty easy (especially compared to the gold dungeon). If you think the lack of gold drops and the difficulty level of the silver dungeon is frustrating, just wait. I feel like the gold dungeon is maybe 5x harder? What Id recommend is dont worry about the health potions even though they will be slightly fixed. I almost wonder if they should just be removed from the game so players wont get frustrated at their infrequency (Kepa don't actually do this!). Instead you have a set healing on every floor you can depend on which is the strategy to focus on. The spinning mace guys (Glume Guards) are really pretty easy. Basically you stay next to them and as soon as they start spinning their mace you move to their side or back if you can backstab. Dont worry about counting the spins. Just know that as soon as they start its time to move. Dont attack until they are spinning their mace and you have moved out of the way, because they are then frozen in place until they attack. I agree upgrades seem minimal especially if you are used to a normal RPG where if you end up in an area where you are overpowered you just go grind a bit and then you can come back stronger. They just dont help that much unless you first figure out the strategy to beat each enemy. That said they are somewhat crucial I have found to beating the gold dungeon. But even then I have a fully maxed adventurer that I havent made it past the 5th level on the gold dungeon yet. Strategies to beating the gold dungeon with the Cultest 1. Very liberally use your abilities and potions/scrolls. Someone posted about this (thank you!). The drop rate is pretty high so just practice using them a lot. Your goal should be to die with nothing left. If you are dying with a full belt of tricks, you are doing it wrong. You dont need anything to beat the boss with the Cultest so dont bother trying to save them up. 2. Use the infinite? range of the dagger throw. Throw out some test daggers into every room you are about to go into before the door closes. Sometimes you will hit something and draw them out. Then you can take advantage of corners etc. If nothing else you will clear out some junk so you can run around unobstructed. 3. Realize the first level has the hardest creatures on it. The throned custos etc are the hardest creatures I think in the gold dungeon. So dont get completely dismayed by dying frequently on the first couple levels. Just work on getting better at killing those particular monsters. 4. Speaking of which, the Thorned Temerator is always a pain. Your dagger is not quite long enough to confidently use the diagonal attack method you can use with the warrior, etc. If its alone you can just use daggers but a faster and better technique to practice is stand diagonal and let it charge, then do 2 quick attacks and move diagonal again. If its not alone, kill the other creature first and wait for it to try to revive it, then hit it twice and move to its diagonal and repeat. If there is more than one creature with it I would generally use some skills/scrolls. 5. Use daggers against the fire level creatures. If you stand far away enough, the demons wont even attack you. Its bit time consuming though but you can generally get through the fire levels with losing no health 6. Random tip for the Chatter Pile (that mass of skeletons or whatever), just run around and wait for it to activate its red explosion thing and run out of that and THEN attack. Then repeat. Do not try to attack before or youll get hit. 7. Boss - Ive now made it to the boss two times (once with the warrior and once with cultist). Im 2/2. Kepa please dont increase the difficulty, its so freaking hard to get there I agree. I had no hourglasses and had to actually learn the attack patterns. I basically stood as far away as possible and just threw daggers while dodging the projectiles. I almost died but it worked. Kepa here are some more half-baked game ideas 1) Auto stun all enemies when you find a hat. Ive died a couple times because your character pauses when you find a hat. Plus itd add a nice bonus to finding a hat. 2) I dont think you should make the game easier or have an easy mode (just dont make it harder!). BUT, it would be cool to help people get over the difficulty curve by adding an intro dungeon (copper?) that is something like an easy 3-4 level dungeon with a forge on every floor so you can try out different upgrades and get familiar with the different characters. As it is I still havent got to try some of the forge upgrades, because if Im on level 6 or something of a good run Im not going to test something out because I want to actually beat the dungeon so Im gonna use the upgrades I know.
KEPA!!! U said u can't make this game coop. How about a small room that lets you fight your friend player vs player over Bluetooth? Would that be easy to add?
Kepa: will the Cultist ever be able to be unlocked other than beating the gold dungeon? Really want to try that class but just don't see beating the gold dungeon a reality haha. that's one iap if actually pay for!
That's a main concern of mine too. But almost would rather never play the paladin if it means IAP. Still. Maybe the health potion buff will be enuf to get us there?
I don't know if even that's enough haha....I've made it to the gold dungeon with the warrior, adventurer, and now Mage. The only way I see beating it is if the Mage HP gets a major increase.
Well if you buy the warrior gift upgrade right now, it's bugged and give all your other characters (not the Warrior) a health upgrade (see my post above). That will be fixed with the first upgrade though so better hurry ha. I think beating it with the warrior is the easiest though. Easy of course being a relative term, more like it's just a tiny bit less incredibly difficult for the average player. Try watching one of the YouTube playthroughs that JackMule put up (JackMule you are a machine!). I also referenced my initial post where I put my own tips to win with the warrior although I was still relatively new to the game at that time ha. The only difference I'd say now is use your powerups don't save them except save up to two hourglasses if you find them because they are apparently very useful against the 3rd boss. The warrior is going to get a bit nerfed in the next update too as far as the shields which I still think is a mistake because I feel like if the gold dungeon was any harder I would have given up. The cultist is really fun to play and the more people that get to play with her the better. It's not like it's by any means easy to beat the gold dungeon with the Warrior as is. So I personally still recommend keeping the warrior's shields as is.
Thanks for the appreciation! WooHooII's been helping out a bunch too, especially with finding new hats and documenting rare enemies. I actually had the day off school today, so I went and added a bunch of stuff to the wiki. There are now 5 or 6 new pages and a 'table of contents' (which I linked to in my sig, taking from your suggestion). @Kepa Two things, completely unrelated: 1) I've been having a somewhat consistent graphical glitch occurring recently that's extremely annoying. Some enemy projectiles become invisible or altered (green shots become tiny orange balls, for example), the remains of some enemies and decorations vanish instantly instead of spreading across on the floor, and some lighting effects are all screwy (such as the glow of the Saint Statues). This really sucks, because it interrupts both gameplay and the aesthetic beauty of the game. I believe I've seen some other people complain about this, but I needed to bring it up again. 2) Would you mind, when you have the time, taking a look at the "Enemies", "Items", and "Update Log" pages of the wiki to check their accuracy and/or completeness? And then be so kind as to report your findings here for me/everyone? Thanks if you do, alright if you don't.
Thanks man....your "abusive spouse" refrence is spot on. I made a previous comment saying something like "I want to throw my phone against the floor every time I die, only to just to fire up another go"
Same here. It seems that lighting/particle effects sometimes stop working for several minutes, or in one case until I restarted my phone. I've had this happen before, but it's suddenly become far more frequent in the last few days.
Tactics obviously make a huge difference. I watched a video on the silver dungeon boss and beat him next try. Still I wonder if I can ever get the cultist or pally Curious if u guys have a lot of apps running in background when u get the graphics glitch. I have not experienced it yet with the 5c
Sorry if I missed it, but when is the update that contains MFi support coming out? Im tired of Humphrie slaying me repeatedly and want to try my luck with a controller
Oh yeah, those guys are bugged. Hopefully can fix that in the first update. Maybe the second. It's a pretty goofy bug that's tied to some other stuff. They're way easier without that "will attack instantly if attacked" bug. The Nightmare variants become especially troublesome due to this bug. The mage health upgrade actually is bugged. It's supposed to give her more max health, NOT increase her health gained when going downstairs. The newer dungeons will give more upgrades or more frequent upgrades. Though you'll need to beat the third dungeon to unlock the first new one (after we add it). I like the POWER OF THE HAT idea though will need to play with that. Might encourage opening chests early, which I don't actually want to encourage. Wouldn't be too easy to add, no. Maaaybe we should. In the Toucharcade stream today, someone asked if there would be some alternate ways to get the Paladin, if you were someone that never beat every single character's 4th dungeon. Maybe some sort of death counter, and after the death counter gets to a certain amount, you can find the cultist and paladin in the 3rd and 4th dungeons, respectively, in a really rare encounter? And then you'd unlock them, as an alternate way to do that... 1) What areas does this happen in? Is it always Tower? 2) I'm not sure when I'll have the time, haha. Can't promise anything sadly but maybe I'll do it over the weekend if I remember. Not sure. We've had a big delay with the first update, due to the new boss we put in taking way more time than expected. But the second update SHOULDN'T have a big delay... (then again, it's not like we saw the first update's delay coming either)
No, the graphics bug happens in all three dungeons. I know because I vividly remember specific cases. In Bronze, Lifters shoot completely invisible shockwaves and completely vanish when killed. In Silver, Libraries are filled with invisible, flickering, or discolored shots. In Gold, the boss shoots tiny orange balls at you instead of its normal shots. The glitch doesn't affect all projectiles, though. The Bearer's shots that grow bigger and faster, for example, have always looked completely normal even while the glitch is active. The effect is really inconsistent, and I unfortunately haven't noticed any distinct triger or pattern. I'd like to record it in action, but I don't currently have the means to do so. As for the wiki check, I'll bug you every couple of days until you've got time
I really like the death counter idea for a rare encounter to get cultist and pally And then when u do get that rare encounter u can eventually buy the gift upgrades of cultist and pally which will let the rest of us go back with the early characters and beat the stuff that was previously too difficult. In no means am I bashing the difficulty it's actually the most appealing thing to me
Yes, I've gotten this same bug twice; In both instances for me I was playing the Mage and got it in the Silver Dungeon. I have not encountered it in the other dungeons, myself. In my instances, I unloaded the game from memory fairly soon after encountering it because it would slow gameplay down for me. Doing so took care of the bug easily, and since Wayward Souls has a rather slick ability to preserve my spot I picked up right where I left off when I reloaded the game. In both cases, the bug started during a firefight with lots of mage shots in the air. One time was in a library and the other was in a regular tower room with a bunch of mages and Imperiate guards. It feels like some sort of memory or resource leak associated with drawing the glowy bits on the screen. When I got it, only animations related to magic shots seem affected, though from feedback above it probably extends to the shockwave-style shots of the lifters, glume captains, and Humphrey. I assume the orange balls we see in the bug are the actual shot without the embellishments layered on top. I play on a recently purchased iPhone 5c and I'm obsessed with keeping my active app count to the bare minimum. It's the only bug of this type I have encountered while playing.
Yeah, I've wondered about this, because the "friendly fire" rules do seem inconsistent. Mage Gauntlet was similar in this regard, which I bring up because enemies common to both games seem to have consistent friendly fire rules. For instance, Orc Hags can damage other orcs with their fireballs, but Faceless are immune to their own wails and shots. For the Ashen Cults, it seems the demons can damage the humans and skeletons but not each other. Exploding Zombies in both games if I recall correctly do not damage their fellow undead. I assume some of this is intentional. Making it so the Baron can hurt his own guards is I think intended as a strategic option. If the fat undead could engage in friendly (fiendly?) fire, then those rooms would be much easier, just light one or two for an epic chain reaction. In-story, the demons appear to have contempt for their followers, so it makes sense that they don't care about collateral damage. A room full of thorned could kill themselves just by running a large circle.
I've seen it in all three dungeons, although it's most frequent when I'm playing as the Mage and there are a lot of casters around. It's not limited to these cases, though: I've had it trigger while fighting Humphrey, which was irritating since it made all of his shockwaves invisible. In any case, it's easy enough to fix by closing and reopening the game.
So I defeated the Gold Dungeon with the Warrior. I now have the Mage and the Rogue remaining. For those who haven't defeated the King of Thorns yet, you can do this. You will unlock the cultist. My run was dicey at times, from forge upgrades I got the ruby shield, the gloves that increases criticals, and a Level II duskhandler sword, which currently is my favorite warrior sword upgrade. It seemed all the critical-boosting items had an effect on stronger enemies, but I spent a good amount of time without a working shield because the ruby shield appears to be made out of paper mache. Related to that, I spent a good amount of time with low health but I managed to make the stairs each time. For the boss I had half-health, one hourglass, and nine axes so I used the hourglass first, got as much hacks in as I could and when it ran out I retreated across the screen and landed all nine axes on him. As expected, that wasn't enough to win so I charged in, lost what was left of my shield along the way and just hammered away and managed to outlast the boss.
