That looks pretty fun. Nothing super amazing, but it does look fun. And original (to the iPHone)

Sadly NOTHING could live up to the cheesy hype stunt they pulled here where all of us had WEEKS to imagine what the game could be. In the long run I don't think this helped as much as simply not really advertising it until they had something to tell about it since now all of the dreamers feel almost personally offended (a lot of, "this is not even CLOSE to the game I was anxiously hoping for").

Wow there has to be a pattern here. Both this game and iSamurai are obviously mediocre games that instead of quietly being used as stepping stones to real games down the road, they instead spend a lot of money convincing the publisher Freeverse and major iphone gaming websites to promote them as AAA titles.

Beware the hype guys. This has me worried for Legion of Amon, of which we've had nothing but great artwork and is being published by *DRUMROLL* Freeverse....

They set up the Warpack Grunts advertising weeks (months) ago, based on a development schedule and when the game was due to be released. Because we don't jam advertisements down your throats on Touch Arcade and there are only a few spots to go around they get booked far in advance. Freeverse booked the Warpack Grunts advertisements a long long time ago, plans changed and the game got pushed back, in the meantime we were working on the iPhone Launch Party and naturally approached Freeverse who said they had Warpack Grunts coming up and would love to show it off.

To actually keep the Launch Party a party where... things are launched, we asked everyone to keep the lid on things so we could retain the "launch" aspect of the party instead of "Oh yeah here's some videos of some games we've all seen before."

People who hype games up in their heads are always disappointed regardless of how good the game is, so there's not much you can do to prevent that. Look how angry some people are over what a "let down" Star Defense is because they expected it to be the most revolutionary iPhone gaming experience in modern history of man instead of just a fun tower defense game.

At the end of the day I think the complainers and the hype whiners make up an extreme vocal minority. Touch Arcade is a big site with tons of traffic, but it doesn't even begin to reach even a notable percentage of App Store customers.

So, when figuring how damaging these "stunts" are to developers you need to consider we're dealing with a very small slice of the iPhone gaming populace, and an even smaller slice of those people who follow the forum and the site close enough to start forming theories and building hype over cryptic banners.

I can fill you in on some basics :) We're sorting out a proper video of gameplay as the ones up at the moment don't actually show too much.

Warpack: Grunts is a squad based game where you tap to lead your squad around, double tap to fire at enemies (or select your alternate weapon and tap a target). There are 40 missions in the campaign including tank and attack helicopter missions as well as a special unlockable mode for those of a more survivalist persuasion ;) You can replay any mission you've completed with online highscores for the campaign and each individual mission.

Various weapons are dotted across the maps and using them tactically is critical to success. The sniper rifle is way cool, but a little useless against tanks for instance.

The aim for us was to write a simple to control, fun game, with a lot of stuff blowing up :)

Sounds great, were you guys inspired by an old game called Cannon Fodder? I'm a huge fan of that classic.

Oh, sorry to be a broken record but is there any sort of randomization (enemy placement if not the maps themselves) in this survivalist mode or maybe even the other missions?

No price but Freeverse said that it would be coming real soon so I would give it two weeks? That's the release and doesn't include the Apple review process. With the review process it would probably be 2 and a half to 3 weeks. Although I might be off.

There's always a degree of randomisation in my games, but the main campaign is primarily mission based (enemies have enough random factors to keep you on your toes ;) ) so a bit of a mix. The 'survival' mode is very random ;)

I'm experimenting with another mode for a possible update. but I don't want to get into promising updates at this stage as it might not work :)

Price is $0.99 btw. and should be released on the 24th if approval goes well.

As long as RANDOMNESS factors in heavily for one of the modes, I'm in!

We set the release date for the 24th, and submitted to the cert already. So if everything goes smooth, it should drop on the 24th (fingers crossed). Now we just wait for Apple to do their thing.
