As an example of a recent indie game that clearly demonstrates that "indie" doesn't have to be synonymous with "low quality" development, take a look at Bastion (on Xbox and PC via Steam), which is an incredibly well-presented and well-received title that beats out many big-budget titles in the gameplay and aesthetics departments.

While the game is published by Warner Bros., the seven-person team of developers had already mostly finished the game before signing on with WB earlier this year. In addition, the only reason they needed a publisher at all was because getting their game released on Xbox Live Arcade required that they be attached to one; they could have gone to Steam first without WB's involvement. I only mention the above because the developers have stated that WB's presence didn't alter or interfere with the game's design, direction or production.

The real question is whether Supergiant Games would see an iOS version of the game as a worthwhile investment. ^_-

How'd we start using this thread as a debate over the definition of indie developer? Come on now, we aren't talking about the game, we're talking about definitions. (Sound familiar?:D)

K back to anticipating Warm Gun: Carnival of Bullets and Warm Gun.

I didn't say you did, and I wasn't responding to your post; stop looking for arguments where there are none.

Incidentally, SV was entirely correct: the definition of an indie (independent) developer is simply an individual or team who is not supported by a publisher; it has nothing to do with quality, resources, or developer skill (amateur or professional is an irrelevant distinction).

yeah. "back to warmgun" is the perfect way to try to pick up an argument

wrong. the publisher has nothing to do with the term "indie".

and i said "we", meaning, he didn't say anything about quality neither.

and TO WRAP IT UP, you replied to his reply to me, so who's looking for arguments? ;)

    NOW, back to warmgun :p

An independent (indie) developer is one that is not financially supported by a publisher; that's the exact definition. End of story.

Continuing to state something that is incorrect will not make it correct.

look who's not asking for arguments. *facepalm.

wrong. at least look for the definitions online dude.
    1. there are "indie" publishers.
    2. the term indie falls in any kind of production that is not associated with a major company, THAT'S INDIE, it has nothing to do with publishers.

    e n d o f s t o r y.

  8. Kay guys i think you are missing the main idea of this thread. whay argue about something when appstore's best wild western themed FPS is about to release soon. Also i really don't care what the definition of INDIE is but i know that Emotional Robots have been working their butts off trying to provide us with a very nicely polished game that everyone will enjoy. Sorry if i offended anybody but we should all just talk about this epic game and not argue about a definition of a word.

anyways that was my two cents.

There's no argument here; I'm correcting your misinformation. Calm down.

An "indie developer", when talking about gaming, is one who is not financially supported by a publisher; it's a specific term with a specific meaning in a specific field. What you believe "indie" means in other situations is irrelevant, because we're not talking about those. "Garnishing" somebody's salary does not mean you're putting parsley on it - specific term, specific meaning, specific field.

You can talk about Warm Gun all you want; if you continue to post misinformation, though - especially when you're snidely "correcting" somebody who was actually right - you can expect to be corrected yourself.

    ^^^wrong. for the 3rd time.

there's no "fields". the term "indie" in the creative productions is just one and it has nothing to do with publishers, in this case; in gaming.

that is not "what it think indie is". that what it is, that the actual definition for indie.

to not be related to a major company.

you can correct me all you want, but please just wait until i actually make a mistake. mk?

but feel free to drag this all you want buddy. ;)

EDIT: actually no, i'm going to be to bigger man here, feel free to dispute, this thread was made for warmgun and you deliberately deviated from the topic, despite being arrogantly wrong. so, i'm out, keep replying if you must. i won't. bye. :)

Well we have the prequel thing "Carnival of bullets" coming before summers over, and the actual warm gun should be out some time in September I think.

It is near-impossible for small developers to account for and predict all that can occur during the development process, as they lack the funds to quickly resolve (hire extra programmers and debuggers, create additional assets in a few days, etc) sudden hindrances. Hell, even some big studios can sometimes slightly misjudge the time required to complete a project ;)

Yer probably best off replacing any given release date for an unfinished project with "Soon™". Criticizing the devs for the added timed doesn't seem to speed up the process, strangely enough ;)

(Lack of communication in delays, however, is deplorable, and a good way to loose a fanbase. Can't accuse Emotional Robots of that shortcoming, though ;) )

Our release date has always been mentioned as a rough estimate with the chance for delay due to the very nature of working with new technologies. If you guys want an honest breakdown of why we didn't release in August, it's because of network connectivity. Aside from a few bugs that require a day or two each to fix, we have this one huge looming issue that we need to resolve - right now players can't host servers without manually forwarding their ports.

We're looking at several different possible solutions - most of which will end up enhancing the game even further. Once we fix this issue we'll do one last check to make sure we didn't forget anything and we'll submit both Warm Gun and Carnival of Bullets to Apple for approval.

I know this type of transparency isn't "normal" for game developers. We love you guys for taking an interest in our game - however big or small. Every time someone posts something about Warm Gun it gives us a renewed determination to work our asses off even more. We're trusting that you guys understand we wouldn't release a game until we felt it was a well rounded, enjoyable experience that was more than worth your time.

I also noticed a couple posts (lol) regarding our "indie" status. Indie is a highly debated term even among indie developers themselves, so I'm not going to get into that. What I do want to mention is that while we might not have a staff of over 100 employees, we are dedicated to the Warm Gun franchise. Updates will be constantly rolling out for both Carnival of Bullets and Warm Gun. We plan on expanding both titles quite a bit - a good portion being free updates.

So keep on asking questions! If we don't respond right away it's most likely because we're buried in code!

This should shut some people up. Clearly these devs plan to release a highly polished and high quality experience. Not some muck that was quickly rushed through the door. Patience is nearly always rewarded ;)
