Definitely. However, it is important to note that while WHQ is a pretty faithful port of a quite dated dungeon crawler boardgame, it is not an RPG or traditional turn-based strategy game, so if you go in expecting either of the latter you may well come away confused and/or disappointed.

Bought it full price. It never real did it much for me. Played 10 minutes, found it rather slow, lacking and boring. Looked at all the IAP for possible additional content and never touched it again. All the IAP makes it look like they are trying to nickel and dime you. Maybe if some of the IAP were sold as packs they would hold more appeal.

No, its like Hunters: Episode Warhammer, but without the minimal strategy those two titles have. Very polished presentation but not very deep gameplay IMHO.

Are the randomized dungeons part of the whole game (i.e. all DLC campaigns etc) or just a specific and limited game mode?

Not sure exactly what you are asking but the game can be broken down like this:

Base Game: Takes about 12 hours to complete assuming loot grinding is limited to leveling for the final quest. Monsters are levels 1-6.
9 Red Dungeons - This are the story quests and are pre-set to a certain level. Once complete they do no reappear on the map unless you reset them.
Infinite White Dungeons - These are the random dungeons, divided into 3 mission types; rescue X, kill X, find item X offering rewards usually suggested by the name of the quest. These scale to the level of the heroes you bring in.
1 Black Dungeon - This is the final dungeon for the region-specific storyline. It is a set level like red quests, and can be repeated as many times as you like to farm the loot.

The Hidden Threat: Has the same dungeon quantity as the base game. Monsters are levels 1-6.

Brutal Tribe: Has 13 Red Quests, 2 Black Quests, and as with other regions, infinite White Quests. Enemies are levels 6-8.

Both Undead Expansions: These do not add a region. Instead they appear among the White Dungeons and in ambushes for other dungeons. They have no story linked to them, but scale through levels 1-8 adding variety to monster encounters throughout the game.

To clarify: It is not an RPG in the tradition sense in that there is no chosen one ploughing through an impossible mission to save the world. Rather, the heroes are essentially just a party of random mercenaries, and with a few exceptions, the missions you do are for profit rather than making the world a better place. However, it is an RPG is sense that it works off a leveling system like many RPGs and thus the difficulty largely depends how much you grind before taking on a particular mission.

The randomized dungeons are the game. A large part is to enter various levels and fight in randomized dungeons. There's a separate party management and quest system revolving around getting loot or character upgrades and plot; primarily to motivate further randomized dungeon crawling. This sounds really awesome; but the randomized dungeons consist of limited quests repeating with the same tile sets and pathetically few varieties of enemies (basically orcs, spiders, and 1-2 other "surprises"). It's like just playing the exact same level repeatedly because "randomized" levels are primarily corridor based with limited variety.

$0.99 is probably a fair price for WHQ but it's annoying how much of the IAP seems like it's what would be standard for a $4.99 game. I do like the dice role elements that control how many spells you can cast or even if enemies surprise attack.

Cool, thanks for the explanation. I'm guessing if you get the IAP content, there are more quest and enemy variety though? Either way, for a buck, I'll get the base game and try it out.

Definitely don't agree with this as the tile sets are pretty varied and extremely detailed. In addition, the base game alone has over 20 different monsters.

$5 for a 12+ hour game with as much polish as WQ seems like a pretty good deal to me. I haven't played much that gives more at this quality for a similar price.

Hidden Threat adds about 15 new monsters, Brutal Tribe is about the same. Each undead expansion adds 6.

I can't blame you, and loathe IAP myself, but the IAP here is essentially an oldschool proper expansion pack, granted the weapons are stupid. You're not being nickeled and dimed and the base game has more than enough content to justify $5, let alone $1; people saying otherwise are insanely entitled. It's an app game for crying out loud, 12+ hours of content for $5 bucks is better that almost any modern AAA, not to mention the only way to play an out-of print board game that runs for $400+.

I'd prefer to have it all for $15, certainly, but the content arrived over the course of three separate releases and I certainly wouldn't have preferred paying $15 for the base game with the only the promise of upcoming content, that's the kind of nonsense PC developers pull these days and Steam endorses.

It's well worth the price, expansions included, just read the other posters clarifying what the game actually is and know what you're getting into. All the people I've seen upset that this isn't a traditional RPG have only themselves to blame.

    location, location.
I paid full price for the game and bought the first two lots of extra content. No regrets at all. One of my favourite iOS games. I can see it not being everyone's cup of tea though.

I personally dont like turn-based strategy games in general, but i am confident in saying that Warhammer Quest is among the best games i have ever played on my ipads.

It's not very tactical but I enjoyed it, however there's a lot of rinse and repeat. I personally feel they went a bit OTT with the IAP, it's not as bad as a lot of iOS games but it dips it's foot in there to test the waters. Half the IAP is what I'd consider expansion type, the other half I would consider fairly typical "let's see how far we can push it". The IAP releases actually put me off playing TBH, otherwise there is some fun to be had if things like that don't bug you.

One other thing that did nark me on release was item drops for IAP characters and places on the map marked with IAP content, you never truly felt like you had bought a complete game.

And how is it compared to XCOM? I've put many hours into XCOM and love it, but I didn't enjoy Hunters 1 too much.

I'd put it between Hunters and XCOM... especially if you play on Hardcore difficulty (which has permadeath, like XCOM). It's not as deep as XCOM, as there are no bases or resources to build up or craft with. Once you purchase the two expansions, you'll be able to jump all over the map looking for whatever battle you'd like and searching for better loot (a HUGE driving point for the game), but it's up there, and definitely a game that TBS fans should check out at this price.
