Vigil RPG is a single-player, 8-bit-style, premium RPG, where *every* battle — not just boss fights — is quick, yet has interesting decision-making. Be a solo hero on a quest to discover the hidden cause behind the sudden appearance of marauding bands of goblins and monsters! Vigil RPG is the ideal pocket-size turn-based RPG, by incorporating features that you may come to wish that every mobile game had: • Created by a one-person development team with a design goal of maximum FUN — not maximum monetization! Vigil RPG has no ads (even before you buy!), premium currencies, stamina timers, or even "leave a review!" nags. If a feature doesn't add fun, then it didn't make the cut. • Meaningful decision-making in every combat — even vs. non-boss enemies! Every enemy has unique attack patterns and "tells" for a clever player to overcome. Healing is hard to come by outside of town, so employing efficient battle strategy is important and rewarding. • Fast turn-based combat! Select an action and launch each combat round in a single tap — no menus to navigate through. Each round takes about one second to play out. Zip through battles quickly against easy enemies; take your time to consider your strategy vs. tougher foes. Vigil RPG respects your time! • No annoying tropes common to console-port RPGs: No imprecise on-screen virtual joystick; just tap your destination to move. No save points, or manual saving; your progress is continually auto-saved -- even mid-battle! • No Internet connection required! Aside from a one-time in-app purchase to unlock the full game (after the generous free demo), you could play from start to closing credits in Airplane Mode! • Unlike many other mobile games, doesn't unduly drain your phone's battery! Vigil RPG is 100% implemented in Apple's native Objective-C and Swift programming languages — no bulky 3rd-party frameworks used! VIGIL RPG SPECIAL 10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION - Huge v3.0 free update! • Vigil RPG is now free-to-try! Play through several quests before unlocking the full game with a single in-app purchase! No ads after -- OR BEFORE -- you buy! • Challenge HONOR MODE! Inspired by a certain awesome hit 2023 AAA RPG -- okay, fine, it's Baldur's Gate 3 -- you can now opt in to this challenging new mode, featuring even more difficult bosses, and PERMADEATH! • Bo the Bartender has even more new advice, commentary, and humor for you! Tap him at the tavern for more tips! • Reworked several normal enemies to be more fun to battle! The Armored Goblin now really doesn't like it if you bypass his shield block with LIGHTNING, for one! • Local high scores for quests! Challenge your best times from prior playthroughs! • Beautiful high resolution support for all iPhone and iPad sizes, from iPhone SE to the 13" iPad Pro! (Runs on your Apple Silicon chip Mac, too -- but Vigil RPG is best enjoyed as an iPhone game!) I'm the developer of Vigil RPG (Jonathan Schneider). Vigil RPG was just released on the App Store earlier today (Tuesday 11/11/2014). Beyond the summary above, there's more information about Vigil RPG on its website, here: http://aggromagnetgames.com/ If you have any questions about the game, please post here and let me know! Thanks! qdiddy Well-Known Member Jul 24, 2014 442 0 0 #3 qdiddy, Nov 11, 2014 I got a crash when I was trying to switch out the ice spell for something better at the training grounds. Ideas? AggroMagnetGames Well-Known Member Nov 6, 2014 58 12 8 Software developer Michigan, USA http://www.aggromagnetgames.com/ #5 AggroMagnetGames, Nov 12, 2014 Unfortunately, and very embarrassingly, that's a a legitimate bug that I let slip through to production! The good news is there's a simple workaround while I wait for version 1.0.1 to be approved: Buy a spell power item (an amulet) at the shop in town. After that, you should be able to swap out the ICE spell with no problems. AggroMagnetGames Well-Known Member Nov 6, 2014 58 12 8 Software developer Michigan, USA http://www.aggromagnetgames.com/ #6 AggroMagnetGames, Nov 12, 2014 Thanks! All of the programming was done from scratch by me (Jon). It was all done in the Objective-C language, using a used Mac Mini bought on eBay; Vigil RPG being a hobby project (not a job), that's all my budget would justify! Most of the enemy art is CC-BY licensed stuff from http://opengameart.org. A full list of contributors are in the game's credits (accessible from the title screen). I'm really grateful to those artists for making their art available for indie developer use! I'm not a composer, so the music is likewise CC-BY or public domain licensed, from a variety of sources, also given in the credits. Most of the sound effects for the game I generated myself using two free online tools: as3sfxr (for generating short 8-bit-like sound effects) and PulseBoy (for generating short bits of GameBoy-like music). I did do some of the art for Vigil RPG myself -- mostly stuff which needed to be unique to the game, such as the town map, the world map, and most of the in-game story cutscene images. Paint.net on Windows was the tool I used for image creation/editing. I used the free online tool http://textcraft.net/ to help make the Vigil RPG title page logo. qdiddy Well-Known Member Jul 24, 2014 442 0 0 #7 qdiddy, Nov 12, 2014 It's very good for a one man game! However I don't think it's "3 dollars" good. It needs content, quests, adventures, side-quests, and maybe puzzles, but as of now, it is a very enjoyable experience and I'm glad I tried it. I have tried a lot but I do not really find my liking. This game is fun , addictive. I'm still in the beginning, but this game is definitely promising. For now, four stars but definitely a pleasant playing experience. garbul Well-Known Member Oct 2, 2014 148 0 0 #9 garbul, Nov 12, 2014 Just on the merits of using a Mac mini to create this, I salute you and will check out the app. I have a hobby Mac mini myself... congrats on the release. Comparative pricing is key. Yes, the early Dragon Warrior / Dragon Quest games -- in particular, the original Dragon Warrior 1 for NES -- were absolutely a heavy inspiration for Vigil RPG. In particular, with regard to the art style, and the solo hero / 1-hero-vs-1-monster combat mechanic. evilabdy Well-Known Member Jan 18, 2014 122 0 0 http://www.soundcloud.com/djkennetha #17 evilabdy, Nov 13, 2014 Had a feeling . Loved that on my nes waaaaay back. I certainly appreciated the design around that. And the save feature in this game was a great idea. That's one thing I found myself annoyed by when I played the iOS ports of Draqon Quest 1 and 4: Do we really still need fixed save points (even given a desire to be faithful to the original game)? So I coded Vigil RPG to just always save your game, automatically. The hero art style and animation is definitely a strong homage to that old NES Dragon Warrior game, though, by design! I've had one other report of a similar problem from another user (who got his character into the low 20s before having the problem). If would possibly be willing to send me a copy of your save file so I can see what's going on, that would be enormously helpful. I'll send you a PM. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
