    Hi;

I am the developer of the new game, Upsi Runner, which has just been gone up on iTunes for 99 cents.

I'd really like to hear any feedback from people about what they like, and what they would like improved in future versions

-- UPDATE Here is a gameplay video
and a video of the achievements, statistics and options that the game has

    Cheers,
    Shen

Some friendly advice between devs with no promo code required-

    1) Make a game-play video and post to youtube. Put the link in your store description and embed it at your website.

    2) The icon, while a cute depiction of the snail, may be a turn off for some buyers. It also may not be enough to draw in users who browse the app store on their iPods and iPhones directly. They cannot tell much about the game. I know that this is kind of nebulous, but there's a certain balance to strike with the icon in particular that can affect sales based on all the reading I've done over the last 3 or 4 months.

Best of luck to you with your new release! I'm jealous, still waiting for approval of my game :D

commander tell us something more about your title... write a thread about it! :)

  7. Video

    Cheers,

A youtube video is next on the todo list.

Interesting ideas on the icon, I originally had a bit of a screenshot from the game as the icon, but the requirement for a 512x512 version killed that idea.

Working out a good and simple design for an icon that fits in 57x57 pixels is a hard hard job.

Well, mine was previewed on the front page of touchArcade over the weekend. So as not to pollute Shen's thread I'll let you search for recent posts under my name to figure out what it is ;) You'll see new posts about it once it is accepted!

    Shen,
I think the quicker you can get a video done the better you'll be.

I agree the 512x512 requirement makes things tough. A screenshot may be tough to recognize when scaled down to icon size. I actually started with only the 57x57, and then when I scaled it up it looked horrible :D Anyway that made me start over and hand draw a 512x512 icon and scale a copy down to 57x57. Even now I'm still not completely happy with mine, it's better though!

I wish I could give you some suggestions on how to portray the action in the icon, but maybe pante has a good point - make a contest? I think someone would have to play it to capture the feel for the icon, so maybe you'd give an iTunes gift card or something :)

  10. Icon Contest

A contest for a new icon is an interesting idea.

I'll keep it in mind when I start getting ready for the next release.

Thank you for the promo code. I don't just take it and run, so the following is for the dev (I won't just PM you as you preferred a post):

I do really like the game. It gives that old school arcade game feel. I like it much better than pacman for the iPhone (which is a huge plus). My ultimate test for an app is twofold...1) will it stay on my iPhone? and 2) do I keep wanting to play it? Luckily, the answer is yes for both; however, see my suggestions in order:

    1) Please fix the test as it strains my eyes (and I have 20/20 vision). I can not overstate how bad/pixilated the text is. There has to be a way to get an old school feel without hurting my eyes. That is a big downside for the longterm IMHO.

    2) It would be nice to have a pop-up box for achievements rather than having to check. Look at MotionX poker as an example.

    3) It would make the game even better if you could unlock different/faster characters other than the snail. That shouldn't be too hard to implement, but it would greatly add to the game

Here are the things I really liked:

    1) The controls are fantastic. I like both touch and tilt controls...most games I like one and can't stand the other

    2) I like that high scores are kept for each difficulty, but you can still see all of the high scores at the same time.

    3) I like the variety of levels and the 8-bit feel to them.

Conclusion: Nice game! I hope an update is on the way to fix the text asap, and I also hope for unlock-ables in the future. If you would like to discuss anything further, please pm me.

Again, thank you for the code. I really do appreciate the chance to test out games and interact with devs. I think more devs should be involved like you!

  15. Thanks for the feedback rpb1975. I'm glad you like the game overall. I spent quite a while working on it, and tried to implement all the generic features that people have been asking for on the forums, like automatic suspend/resume, flip screen, etc

I can look at using some making a few different fonts available in the game. What in particular don't you like about the current one? Is it just that it is pixelated? Are the colors ok? I am using the same font in another game I am working on, so I guess it is important to get it looking nice.

Could you elaborate a bit about what you mean with the achievements? Every achievement you get currently pops up on the screen with a cup as you achieve them. I 'll have a look for some MotionX Poker videos to see how they handle theirs.

Also, It isn't terribly obvious, but most of the achievements can be achieved in Easy, Medium or Hard difficulty, and you get a bronse, silver or gold cup respectively. If you get an achievement in one mode, you can still get it in a harder mode later one, and your cup will be upgraded.

As for unlockables, that is a good idea, and I'll see what I can come up with for the next release. There is a bit of space left on the options menu, so some unlockable stuff would fit right in.

I stand corrected regarding the achievements, and I didn't realize that you could unlock for each difficulty...nice touch! As for the font, it is kind of a mixture of everything that makes it harder for me to read. If you would like, you could send me screenshots of other fonts or colors, and I could give you my .02 (for what it's worth).

  18. Better font?

What do you guys think of this for a font - it is the same as the old one, but black instead of yellow, and the border has been removed.

In the 2nd screenshot it becomes difficult to work out what the text is saying, which is why I had the border in the first place, but maybe I can have in game text with a opaque whitening background behind it, so there is always at least some contrast.

Much better font! I like the idea of having the white outline only in the game.
