I imagine this question would come up all the time, and yet I couldn't find anything in Search, so forgive me if I missed anything. I'll soon be upgrading my iDevice (from an iPod touch 2 to an iPhone 4), and I don't want to mess up all my saved games and high scores. What is the best way to handle this? I figure I'll sync my iPod, then initialize my iPhone as new, without using any "backup", right? When I pick the apps to sync it should carry over the same data it just synced from the iPod? I want to be sure before I go and lose everything. Thanks!
As far as I know, syncing does NOT back up save data. What you need to do is backup your iPod, then load that backup onto the new iPhone. That should carry everything across.
It's simple enough: sync and backup your old device, then connect your new device. iTunes will ask you whether you want to restore with the data of your old device (identified by name); say yes, then wait for it to cycle twice, once to load your data, once to bring in your apps and media. Alll your save files should be copy into your new device. Keep in mind that a few games (like Archetype) use your unique device ID to link to your server-based data: you will not be able to access your stats in that case (at least till the developer issues a fix). You will also have to remember to sign in to OpenFeint, Plus, etc.
To be safe: right-click your iPod in iTunes, choose Backup. Sync again for good luck, and then the key is choosing to use that backup on your new toy, NOT set it up as new!
Alright, thanks all for the advice! I'm not sure that restoring a new iPhone from an iPod backup would have been my first instinct.
