I'm surprised no one has mentioned this one yet. At least I could not find any thread regarding this. Apple has also announced upgrading the iPod Touch from OS 2.0 to 3.1 is now $4.95. It has dropped in half.

No. It seemed many people did not update. The article I read pointed out 20 million iPod Touches have been sold, and suggested there must have been a significant loss of potential revenue due to people not upgrading.

At first I was thinking a loss on just the $9.95 OS, but then I realized, this actually effects app revenues as well when they are 3.0 only. So not only was Apple losing out on the OS upgrade, but also a piece from missed 3.0 app purchases.

I just upgraded from 2.x last night. It wasn't all that compelling before, which is one reason I did not upgrade. But the new page management system is something I've really wanted.

And now I'm more likely to upgrade to 3.x.

I was holding out due to

    1. $9.99, especially in light of a lot of cool games that were still 2.x compatible

    2. A lot of the 3.0 stuff not really being of use for 1st "gen" touch users like myself

    3. Waiting to see what changes were in store for the 3rd "gen" touch.

The price drop helps alleviate #1, there's more 3.1 stuff that's useful for 1st "gen" touch users now so that helps alleviate the #2 issue, and the 3Gs based true next gen touch was...underwhelming, especially in light of MS's plans for ZuneHD which I'm actually looking at very closely now (to see what the plan is for apps). A camera would've completely sold me on the new itouch.

Still...since I'm gonna hold on to the 1st "gen" a little longer, might as well pay the $5 to upgrade the OS. Not like I'm gonna sell the thing anyway, as I'll probably just give it to a youngster in the family or something.

I agree with you completely Spiffyone. That is exactly where I am at with the update. I was excited to see what the 3rd generation had to offer and more than likely I will still purchase. It just isn't as much of a "must have" than I thought it would be. My 1st generation has been doing just fine for now.

  8. This is per account not per ipod touch. I have about 6 or so ipod touches on my account and each ipod touch it's free except the first one.

There are quite a few. Most if not all of Pangea's games, for instance.

But most devs saw that there was a big outcry from iPod touch owners not willing to shell out the $10, most of them I gather being 1st "gen" owners, so those devs went back and made their games compatible with OS 2.x, with the 3.0 extras available only to 3.0 users.

  11. Still waiting for them to add SHUFFLE ability to OS 3.x for games letting you access your own music. Sure you can add artists, songs, albums or whatever but they will play in the same damn order each time. Just a MINOR oversight on 3.0 api one would think.

So really only way to add shuffle music is the old way. Turn on in game music and double click to bring up the music then pray to the Apple God the next game you pull up gives you the option to enable the music or not. If it doesn't your back to square one.

"Defender Chronicles" (one of my favorite games) started on 2.x. Then went 3.0 only and I could no longer download updates. They just recently updated with 2.0 compatibility. I was quite happy I could begin playing the latest version.

I, personally, had a queue of ten items (not just games) I could not install on my 2.2.1 OS iPod Touch. Several of these had updates I was really wanting.

There have been other games/apps I did not download simply because of their OS 3.0 requirement. Though, you are correct, as I wouldn't say there are a "ton of games for 3.0 only", there is still a good number of them.

Is there a way to update to software version 3 on my brothers ipod touch or does he have to be at his computer because he is at mine at the moment.

You have to be plugged in to iTunes in order to upgrade the OS
