    Hello again :)

The team is working hard on Bouncy Tins, finalizing details and fixing bugs. However they found some time to exhume some old wip of the games and wanted to share this mini making-of with you.

So let's start from the beginning with the core which is the game design.

Move, stop, avoid and collect. That was the core idea but it took some time to tune. Good prototyping is all about gameplay so we forgot about art, squares and placeholders all over the place:

    [IMG] [IMG]

One key factor for a good look and feel on mobile is to make sure everything fits well on a small screen (again more boxes):

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

These helped us how big thing should be which in return affects your level design. It was a very organic process that was tweaked a lot as we were developing the game.

At this point we were ready to showcase some basic level design and gameplay. We also added some art not just to make things prettier but also because it usually makes external testing more pleasant:

    [IMG] [IMG]

We still believed we could add a jumping mechanic to the gameplay (how foolish):

However it just proved unplayable, most people not being able to switch quickly enough from one side of the screen to the other. Adding physical buttons didn't really improved things and actually just made the screen more cluttered!

So we slimmed down the design and got rid of the jump mechanism, despite having done quite a few levels using it already.

Speaking of levels, designing them happened to be probably the biggest chunk of work on this project.

So what did we use for that? Some special game development software or even some custom made tool? No, we just used this:

We found that paper was still the best process to use when scratching your head and brainstorming, so we filled dozens of these with level systems and ideas, before prototyping them:

Afterwards it was a very simple process: implement, test, tweak, rinse and start again :)

We hope you found this overview of our design process interesting. Feel free to ask questions or comment of course :) Next time we will show you how we approached art in Bouncy Tins so stay tuned.

Hello, here we are again and this time we will talk a little bit about...

Yes, game art but not pixel art for sure (maybe someday, you never know). Bouncy Tins is freemium but we still really wanted to give our game a premium look and feel and our art team hasn't spared any effort in trying to make it as beautiful as possible.

But let's start with characters (we'll cover environment in another post).

Our game design somehow drove our art : small character on screen must be readable so they had to be colorful and have a chunky look and feel to them. The team moved very early towards a scifi theme that could offer a good opportunity for variety in characters and environments.

The starting point if of course sketching and we used the good old pencils and paper to brainstorm :

Our artist nailed down a number of concepts revolving around alien monsters and robots (yes, our team love Pixar obviously), and both had their pros and cons.

We ultimately felt , after a few tests, that cute robots would work better with our story line and our visual goals (bold blocky shapes). Animation wise it would also be a better fit with the idea of having them bouncing all around and being blown to pieces.

Our creation process for the characters was quite simple : rough sketch, block the colors , create vector shapes and finally add shading on top.

Using vector arts with layers was a good flow that helped us creating all kind of sizes easily and even allowed us to animate further the characters in spine and use them in marketing material like in our trailer for Bouncy Tins.

Speaking of marketing, our team of artists went also the extra mile and gave more volume to the tins:

Hopefully we will be able to expand on these guys in the near future like we did with the early image in this post !

That's it for now and we hope you appreciate these behind the scenes of Bouncy Tins. Feel free to ask us questions or give comment, it's always appreciated!

Hello, yes it is. Our team of artist has been using it for a while and it makes the whole process very convenient and smooth. It's also very efficient memory wise since you store only the animation data and a few images and not complete unique pngs for each frame of animation.

Yes, you should be able to do most stuff you want with the essential version (that's the one our team used here).
Our artists suggest you give a look at the trial first maybe?

    Hi all,

the team is still fine tuning levels. Here is a selection of ways to die in Bouncy Tins (but don't worry, the tins are sturdy robots):

    Hello all,

the game is nearly ready for launch now and our team excitement keeps growing each day! But meanwhile, let's try to continue this presentation of our game development with an overview of...

    upload_2018-6-21_11-51-5.png

Yes, environments! As mentioned earlier, our design drove our art approach. First and foremost, the game needs to be readable which means that details should be where needed and not all over the place.
A lot of hyper casual games tend to use very simple flat art and we did some early test using this style:

    upload_2018-6-21_11-26-11.png
However we felt it wasn't any groundbreaking or new, just reusing the same old tired hyper casual style that too many games use these days.

Also it wasn't aligned with our goal of premium quality so we went back to the drawing board and let our artist explore ideas:

    upload_2018-6-21_11-26-34.png

    upload_2018-6-21_11-26-53.png

The goal with the sketches was to be able to come with nice interesting themes and motifs that would fit the background story of Bouncy Tins. So obviously it's all very scifi/industrial but we tried to steer away from being too gritty and dark.

One key aspect of doing game backgrounds is that they should be actually stay in the background and not become over detailed or complicated: it's important that the player can always distinguish each game element.

Our team did some prototyping and came out with some conclusions:

    upload_2018-6-21_11-27-17.png
    • Avoid small details.
    • Avoid having horizontal lines that will blend with the platforms.
    • Be careful with negative space as the gaps and holes can create too much noise
    • Backgrounds had to loop seamlessly which in turn means that outstanding details repeating frequently had to be avoided.
    • Keep colors a bit muted but at the same time keep some contrast.
The difficulty here was to keep these in minds while trying to make the environments rich and detailed.

One of our artists came out with the idea of using a cylindrical perspective for the backgrounds in order to give them more depth:

    upload_2018-6-21_11-30-31.png

By keeping the platform very linear over a curved background, we managed to improve clarity and at the same time were able to give a more 3D look to them!

That was the final touch we needed to make the environments feel more solid, combined with our learning from the exploration phase:

    upload_2018-6-21_11-31-59.png upload_2018-6-21_11-35-22.png

The art team afterwards came with some strong themes using a unique color palette. The proper use of complementary colors also helped in making each element clear to the player (tin/platforms/enemies/background).

We have now five environments in Bouncy Tins, each with a unique look and feel and, most important, blending seamlessly with the rest of the game.

That's all for now, but hopefully we will be back with more on the game soon.

Keep watching for the release of Bouncy Tins and meanwhile follow our updates and stories on Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and Twitter
