I belive france has a similar health service? They hardly charge for the excellent service and are getting debt now.
I was under the impression that taxes would be raised to encompass the changed health care. Eventually it would pay for itself due to the taxes.

So does the UK have FREE health care? I havent studied the UK at all..sorry

It's free if you're prepared to wait in line... which can lead to trouble in some cases when people need help urgently but can't get it fast enough (long term conditions, not emergencies, you'll always get instant treatment for those). There are lots of hurdles to overcome and it's in the news quite a lot, but that's not to say we don't want it, we're just constantly trying to improve it.

If your injure yourself on a Saturday night though... be prepared to sit in the waiting room all night with a bunch of drunks and druggies.
