Germany are once again condemned to come 3rd, they were just beaten by the better team of the night though
Looks like someone lost a cool 500,000 euros tonight! As emphatically as one could ever tell a psychic octopus to shove it, someone has placed a 500,000 ($631,000) bet on Germany to go against Paul the octpus' prediction and beat Spain in their semifinal match. U.K. bookmaker William Hill says the record bet was placed over the phone at 10/11 odds. If Germany wins, the caller, who is "based in Europe," will take 954,000 ($1.2 million). A William Hill spokesman told Bettingpro.com: "There has never been a bigger World Cup bet placed and it follows a number of other hefty wagers on the Germans to win the tournament, including 80,000 euros at 14/1 and 100,000 euros at 13/2, and another 75,000 euros for them to reach the final. We don't much mind who wins the World Cup at this stage - as long as it isn't Germany. "Mind you, Spain haven't exactly been unbacked and we have bets of £50,000, £25,000 and two of £10,000 each on them to win the tournament." So while the people at William Hill root for Spain in a pool of cold sweats and Paul the octopus floats, completely oblivious to the concept of sports, a few anonymous Germany fans will stand to make an incredible amount of money off a single match. Assuming Germany continues their bulldozing of all comers. If not, just try to muffle your laughter. Well, Netherlands are considered "the best team to have never won a World Cup", so I think it's about time they deserved one. Definitely not based on how they're currently playing, but based on their efforts in the past.
Looks like England will be in the final after all . Okay, not really. However, I'm happy to say that the English Howard Webb has been chosen to referee the World Cup final. I have a lot of respect for him in the Premier League, where he generally performs very well, so I hope for his sake that mistakes aren't made.
Well, in terms of who deserves to win this World Cup, definitely Spain. Against Germany, they showed their maturity and completely dominated the match. They had so many opportunities that they could have won 3-0 or 4-0, while Germany never even looked like scoring. If Germany had won, then it would have been a shame, as they would easily beat the Netherlands and win the World Cup. Personally, I think that Germany aren't ready to win the World Cup yet, because they're still a very young and inexperienced side. Come 2014, though, expect them to be one of the favourites to win it.
2010 World Cup Winner So, who will win the 2010 World Cup trophy? Netherland or Spain 1st place : ? 2nd place : ? 3rd place : ?
Spain will most probably win, but they don't deserve it - and neither do the Netherlands. Both played pretty badly throughout the tournament; except one match where they may have just shown what they can do. That said, Spain deserve it more than Holland in my opinion. I'm trying not to be biased here , but teams like Ghana, Paraguay, Brazil and Germany deserve to win it much more than any of the current two finalists. Both showed pure skill throughout the tournament, despite having a hiccup once in a while or losing due to a single team-mate or utter fouling and flukes. All my opinion, of course.
