i had this problem too....heres what i did and it worked like a charm.

    1. Get in your car
    2. Drive to nearest Apple Store
    3. Purchase either Macbook; Macbook Pro; iMac; Mac Pro.
    4. Turn on your Macbook; Macbook Pro; iMac; Mac Pro.
    5. Enjoy the greatest and most beautiful (IMHO) computing experience ever!

You don't need to log in. Just make sure you have your CD drive set up as 1st boot device and the ubuntu installer should start upon powering up your computer.

If you're experiencing some installation problems, I'd recommend you download the alternative CD and try with the text installer. It's much faster too.

    Good luck!

That's strange, never had that problem before. Are you trying the last version of ubuntu (10.04)? If the problem persists, you can try to install it from an USB drive, so you can discard any Cd-Rom related issues.

I recommend complete and clean installation, Ubuntu is a complete customizable OS, you dont need to log-in and every april and octber Canonical releases a new version.
