Lupus is right. I was referring more to turn based strategy than turn based RPG, but I certainly don't mind comments on either front. The more input the better as far as I'm concerned. And I agree with you, Lupus. Sometimes those animations just take too long and get boring when you've seen them 25 times. Q
Things I would like are units for close combat, ranged, flying, and naval. Cover those main types of units so you have multiple fronts for strategies. Of course this also depends on the type of game. A sci-fi game may not have water-based worlds, for example. I like a game with a campaign, but A.I. skirmish modes are very important to me as they allow continued replay value. Follow this up with multiple maps covering different points of focus, like land-focused maps, sea-focused maps, and a mixture. I'd even pay for DLC if it contained more maps and/or unit types. One of the most important factors, of course, is enemy A.I. This can make or break a strategy game. I really like Civ:Rev, but I find the sea-based portion a bit lacking. The A.I. does not seem to combine sea units so you tend to always be stronger than the enemy out on the sea.
Military Madness (Turbo Grafix16), Advance Wars, Panzer General type games, Desert Commander. We have Uniwar, which is great, we have War Generation, which is good, Rouge Planet is coming...someday soon, but we need more games like these and those listed above. In my opinion, the Iphone/Ipod Touch is "perfect" for these types of games. If a developer builds it, I will buy it.
I would recommend Robacalypse to anyone looking for a funny, entertaining and challenging RTS/Strategy game. It's probably my favorite iPhone game right now. I've never played the DS version, but I have to say this game is amazing.
Fist of all, Chess, Risk and Catan are board games. Strategic board games, but still borad games. CCGs don't count, they are an awesome category to themselves When i think of turn based strategy, i mainly think of Advance Wars, so i guess thats what im looking for.. that, or Civ, but i do have an open mind. I'd prefer it if it was a complete game, however, instead of one i get gradually through DLC, as that would either mean an incomplete game at first, or additions that could break the strategy. DLC is something more suited to RPGs.
i personally would like a card game.... I would really like something along the lines of pokemon, yugioh card games, or Orion's but just card battles. It would need to be wifi global to be fun. You would have to have really good art and descriptions but keep the overall strategy of the game pretty simple for casual gamers. The game would have to be free to have a lot of users and everyone will start with a series of 5-10 different decks which are all balanced. The money will be made by offering a random 10 cards that offer powerups (think booster cards) and greater bigger cards. Of course to maintain a level of interest to the online free community you should give a random free card to everyone weekly but with a lower chance to get really good cards (but still give those free once in a while, rarly though0You would have to maintain a very tight leash on these cards to see which are broken etc. You dont want a card to be winning all the games. Trading will have to be allowed on the game, but again tight leash for those who would hack the game. you should be able to have a ranking system so the game is still fun to everyone. And maybe an overall story released monthly or so in comics to keep an interest in the cards, the story could be made with simple writing or a few animations. You would need to have a really good menu interface think Rogue Planet. some card idea would have to include magicians, monks, cute lil creatures, reptile like creatures, assasins etc. .... i could go on....but yea
Actually, they are strategy RPGs. Turn-Based RPGs are more traditional menu system Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior or even Breath of Fire. Sorry to nit-pick, but people calling them "turn-based RPG" when they have strategic elements is really bugging me.
