If you wanted to rip from Touchgrind, their version of Skate is simply points based. It's based on a certain amount of time. You could differentiate by giving the first person 1 try for their high point trick, than the second person 2 or 3 tries? I feel like it would be a lot less work for y'all to just go point based vs. specific trick based.

It would definitely be easier to implement it point-based, but, honestly, I think most people who actually want SKATE want it for the challenge of actually landing the tricks you're trying. If it were point-based, it wouldn't be much different than the already-implemented leaderboards. People would just swipe their boards like madmen and get lucky and land back on 720 quadruple flips. It would be like 5 second leaderboards instead of 30 or whatever it's at now.

Basically, if it were point-based, I couldn't care less. I honestly wouldn't even try it out. I turned off points about a day after True Skate came out almost two years ago. True Skate's fan base consists of two types of players. Unrealistic players who care about points and handrail to handrail hopping combos, and then the realistic simulator players who just like the feeling of pulling a hard trick they're actually trying. So far with the leaderboards, competitive-wise, True Skate has kind of catered more towards the former. I think a proper call-it-before-you-try-it game of SKATE would level it out a bit. Although having a point-based system does seem a lot easier to implement so having both couldn't hurt.

Please don't do SKATE based on points lol.

Oh, another skate game is called Cup of Noodles. One person does a simple trick, then the next person has to do that same trick and then add their own. Soon you get an entire line going and the first person to not be able to do it loses!

Yes, definitely call the trick first. If not you have people doing 720 quad flips by flicking random spots. Basically we play Berrics rules:

    1. 5 letters
    2. Last letter gets 2 tries
    3. Always call your trick
    4. Flat ground only (I personally play this way, but obviously you can't do any grinds with this so it's up to whoever plays)
    5. Defense has a larger margin of error (sketchy landings may possibly count)

I think we have considered all these suggestions already for how to implement SKATE.

The ultimate way would be to make the rules configurable. Otherwise, we will probably make trick calling necessary, and allow multiple attempts. (Or maybe you have to do it in the same number of less attempts then then the person who goes first)

The easiest way would definitely be by Score. (I haven't actually looked at TG Skate 2 since it first came out, we have been pretty much concentrating on our own plans which are a bit different. I noticed there was some news about another Australian touch skateboarding game on the Touch Arcade home page that is coming out very soon. It has some pretty screen shots and it sounds like they have been reading our forums and have added couple points people have been asking us to add for years so it will be interesting to see how the game actually plays.)

I don't think the trick names register correctly yet, but you can do them by using the Spin Cam which can be turned on in the Options menu.

2- I love the SLS courses, as I solely play realistic mode now. The normal courses just don't work with realistic mode.

Riggy - you are an awesome True Skater - so I'm super surprised to hear you say that the normal courses 'just don't work' with realistic mode. I am exclusively using realistic mode myself, and I think the normal courses work great with it. It is more challenging, but still possible to do all kinds of awesome skating. Super satisfying to me.

Hey Luke. I was about to order the iPhone 6 and was just wondering if you had any plans on updating True Skate for it's native resolution. If so, do you have any sort of time estimate? Also, do see yourself ever taking advantage of the faster cpu/gpu capabilities of newer phones in any way (graphical or otherwise)? Or even Apple's new "Metal" api? Just curious. Anyway, I can't wait to try True Skate on the slightly larger screen.

If it doesn't just work out of the box, I am assuming we will have a new update out soon to make True Skate work with what ever new iOS resolutions are coming out. We still have lots of updates on the way.

There are a few small things we could do to make sue of extra Power, although, there is also the advantage of simply using less battery. I'm not sure we consider it worth looking into the Metal API. It might be that we already avoid most of the things that the Metal API is meat to fix. We don't have any short term plans to make use of that.

Touchgrind skate 2 handled SKATE really well. It would be sick to see that concept implemented in this game!

    Leaderboard Issue?

    Luke,

I have beat my Best Line score on the Super Crown map in realistic mode three separate times, and none of these have registered. Is anybody else reporting this problem/do you have any suggestions for fixing this?

    Thanks!

We did have some issues a while back, but I thought they had all been fixed.

Is it possible you have crash cam turned off or something?

Does you score show up in the weekly scores?

There might be an issues where if something went wrong with an uploaded score, that score will be stored locally and you may have to beet that score rather then the score on the server.

    Leaderboards

I went to a different skatepark, beat my high score there, and it updated successfully. Then I went back to the Super Crown park, beat my score again, and it successfully updated.

Later I was on inbound park - I beat my score, then immediately checked the leaderboards, and it updated successfully. Then I beat my score again, checked the leaderboards, and it did NOT update. That is the same pattern that caused the problem the first time too. By the way, I am not using the replay or 'watch video' options during any of this activity.

As long as I have your attention, I'll give you more props for such an awesome game, I am only using realistic mode now, and after some awkwardness and frustration at not being able to ollie up to higher objects, now I have it down and it feels amazing. So much more like real skating to have to swipe/lift your front foot up the board in order to get up onto something high. Makes the experience feel like it is happening with both feet/whole body, instead of just smashing the tail and trying to stop the board at the right time. I love non-realistic mode too sometimes just for kicks, but it feels like skating on the moon, or being a kangaroo on a skateboard. Well done on your execution with realistic mode. Now I'm only concerned you may change it in future updates - and forget about my suggestion for a slider bar - it is near perfect as is.

One more thing - do subsequent tricks on the same object reduce the point score during a line? It seems to me that doing the same trick on different objects reduces the point score, correct? Any other tips or pointers you can share regarding the scoring on lines?

It is probably going to be very hard for us to track down this kind of thing. We can delay the uploading of high scores, sometimes it might be possible to get to the highscore table before it was uploaded if you go there quick enough. We also now cache highscore tables. I am not exactly sure what triggers them to be refreshed, perhaps just leaving the menus? But, while you are testing this kind of thing, it might be a good idea to make sure that enough chance has been given for the scores to be uploaded.

Yes, that is right, you will get lower scores for repeatedly hitting the same area, or doing the same trick, or to lesser degree, a similar trick. The only problem is that these penalties are not applied during a combo, so you can do the same grind multiple times by hopping on a long rail during the one combo, which allows you to get a huge score compared to a single grind. With a single grind, the longer you go, the slower the score adds up, but by doing some flip trick into a new grind, it will reset the rate the score is added up.

I think we will change realistic mode at least a little in the future, there are a couple issues with it that have been discussed in this thread to do with the way the slide up affects hard flips compaired to varial flips.

Thanks for the response, that makes sense. I would agree with changing the way it is possible to get such a large score by doing multiple tricks within one large grind/slide. I'm wondering if you would reset the leaderboards when a change like that is made, as it would be very difficult to compete with scores that were achieved previously using that method. I would support clearing the leaderboards and starting over, that sounds like fun.

I'm super curious how you will address the hardflip/varial flip (swiping up/down) in realistic mode, sounds like a real challenge, but I'm sure you guys are up for it.

    Thanks

We will probably make a new set of leaderboards. We have done this several times already. Actually, we might make a way to let people view old leaderboards at some point. I think we are going to need some new leaderboards actually we have already added body spin detection for spin cam for the next update, which I think has made the game have so many tricks that we will need to adjust the replay code to handle it.

I think we will just have to fudge that.

btw, I couldn't help notice skater is out now. Feels kind of halfway between True Skate and Touch Grind to me. It has some pros or cons, however, I think it is still a step bellow True Skate in terms of physics realism. It is lacking most of the subtlety of the True Skate controls, and it has over the top magnetic trucks, but if you want something a little less in depth, that isn't such a bit challenge, then maybe it is for you. I'd recommend it about touch grind, although some people really love the 2 finger focus of Touch Grind.

Anyway, I am sure people will tell us if there are any features they really want to see us add that Skater might have.

btw, I have always been confused why people tell us you can't play two fingered. That is one reason why we've asked some help to get some tutorial videos produced by somebody who can play with 2 fingers with style.

Yeah idk whats the problem with that. You can easily play with one or two fingers and it gives you almost the same results. If anything, playing with two fingers lets you be a fraction of a second quicker with your flips and control

Any chance of making it so that you randomly load in ony of your purchased skateparks every time you boot up the game?
