That's your choice. I suppose this attitude comes from many devs abusing IAPs, especially consumables, and perhaps players wanting to be elitist and wanting to unlock everything in the game the hard way with out people taking short cuts and lessening the prestige. (Personally, I feel it makes the reward bigger when I know I could have paid, but avoided it) Your welcome to make your stand if you like, however, if implemented in a fair and reasonable way, consumable IAPs should be a way for financially rich, time poor people to subsidize the game for time rich, financially poor people. The alternative may be to instead charge more for things like new levels. You and others may want to pay more for these things to make your point, but you may be in a vocal minority. I've seen people happily playing free games with out even realizing the IAPs are there. (Obviously I mean they don't accidentally buy them) I can understand where the hate comes from with non-consumable IAPs too, but if done in a sensible way, it should be a much better consumer experience to download a cheap or free game, and then buy more if you like it, rather then shelling out $60 UDS, or $110AUD (How knows why it is so expensive in AUS when the Aussie dollor is higher), for a game that turns out to be buggy and crap. The problem just comes when devs or publishers are trying to hook you in to an almost scam like IAP scheme, and it is sad that the result is hardening attitudes of people like you towards what could be the ideal consumer situation if implemented in a consumer friendly way. Anyway, we have our principles also, and have steered away from many things as a result, and we have not decided what we will do yet, and will not make any promises. I don't see a problem with consumable IAPs if implemented in a way that has no direct impact on players who don't want to purchase them.
I was thinking the same thing with the linear course. See how far you can make it, etc kind of like JCS.
That was my favorite c64 game. Got the music stuck in my head now. Before I was in the games industry and just before THPS, I started making a skating game demo.. I couldn't understand at that time why there where no half decent skate games, although, it was a bit challenging to figure out how to make it into a full game, which THPS did really well. The good thing about iPhone is you can charge very little and just concentrate on the experience rather then the game. I'd love to put in a Skate or Die level, however, I suspect it might be slightly difficult to get permission from EA.
I wasn't a fan of the THPS downhill levels. Such a lot of work for what amounted to about 60 seconds of play, it made the levels feel somewhat wasted not being able to hang around and experiment as much as you'd like.
I'm not sure a downhill really makes sense for True Skate. The controls aren't geared for that kind of thing, but I have had some requests for downhill, or racing.
Luke, how bout this. Could you add some sort of cheat/glitch (which is available through PM) to hide (consumable) iAPs? Then we could play like it wasn't ever there. Or if they go away after doing whatever they would be used for.
It doesn't have to be downhill - I was thinking more of a stretch of road/alley with things to jump/grind on/over. You could keep a top score for the course, and have a couple follow the path missions which would vary from slaloming around obstacles, to going over them, to a mix, then add specific tricks. A simple downhill idea would be more of a "ski jump" to go over and see what chain of combos you could pull off in the air. Again you could keep a high score. Not sure how interesting it would be, but you could pick out an appropriate JCS level or two to let people skate through. Another easy way to mix things up a bit would be to mirror-swap the park (i.e. use the exact same data with one axis loaded in the other direction.) BTW - last night I went back and gave Touchgrind BMX a serious go and I couldn't stand the physics compared to True Skate. I still like it's level / goal setup, but just couldn't get back into how the gameplay feels.
And then right when you almost finish the JCS level a Jet Car comes whizzing by and runs over the skateboard flattening it (unless you ollie over it).
OK, now I'm having bad memories of that section in Moon Patrol where you had to jump backwards over the UFO trailing you and then shoot it... At least the patrol car at the end of that Skate or Die level didn't try to run you over - you could jump all over it and i think just the lights would com on.
In that case they'd have to mirror the controls as well, else it'd be the same as if they turned off screen-flip support. Replace all the graffiti with Chinese characters, or give the whole area an alien green for bonus points.
bought the game just because it's trueaxis. even if i dont use skate and dont play such games, but looking for new jcs game of course. so just want to say from point of view of gamers who do not have expirience with such stuff. and it's simple, the game could use some missions or better learning system. maybe also some more info about tricks you can do in this game. so it's looks like it's great game but some more introduction stuff would be useful.
Ok, I'll mirror it vertically in the next update, but I will mirror the camera vertically too, so it may be hard to notice the difference. Finally, the update is out! I forgot about the Frontside 360 fix. More importantly, hopefully the loading bug is gone! Hopefully people don't ask me to add nollies after the new nollie mission shows they are in the game already. The next update will have heaps of small improvements to missions and physics. Manuals, and lip tricks are already working much much better in our development build, and some of the issues with missions have been improved. More missions and everything will be coming in updates. Meanwhile. Check out the first post of this forum right down the bottom for the full trick book list.
We will do that at some point, not sure if it will make the next update though. We also have to make sure all the text in the missions will be reversed as well. We also have to fix nollies trick names which are all goofy currently. One of us skates goofy stance in real life.
