Hi, I really enjoy Toucharcade and its iOS app, but I recently noticed that everytime I use the iOS Toucharcade app, it sends over HTTP the following information to the server 162.254.16.206: - DeviceUUID - DeviceUID - DeviceName - Device Model I understand TouchArcade may want to know some stats like the device model... but do you guys really need our Devicename (which is kind of personal) and our UID/UUID ?! This feels a bit like gathering too much data from your loyal users... I would be grateful if you could provide us with some more context as to why you collect this info? PS: You are also exposing your API password in Base64, but you might not really care about that. B.
Interesting. I think I would change the title to "TouchArcade data collection from app?" not "leaking personal information"...as none of that is truly "personal". But I will be curious as to why. I can't imagine this being useful information, just forms of data collection on the types of devices that use the app.
Fair enough... would be happy to rename the thread but do not seem to be able to do so. I would still argue it is kind of personal, as for many people their device name may actually be their real name. Just like you though, I am wondering why they would need that type of info hence my question on this forum. B.
Good point about the device name. I forget that not everyone changes it to something like me (IE: X-Wing) haha
I'm 99% sure that every app you download does this, and most do worse. That said, I'm not responsible for the app in any way so I can't make an official comment.
Yep, it's pretty standard. We can't update the app to change how this works, so I hate to say it but if you don't like basic analytics being sent just don't use it. :-\ (Basically every app does this though.)
Ok. Thanks anyway. Would be best not to have that sent over http and don't really agree that all apps do that but as you said... That's the way it is.
Hey, I was gonna tell you this earlier, but using Safari and the TA site is not bad at all on mobile.
Maybe not over http, but I promise every app you're using that has any level of network connectivity is reporting usage statistics.
