I really hope so. Cant believe I read it all Still not sure what his real point is Sums it up perfectly
Wow! Let's get back to reality now. Profit gained from products (games) sold isn't some sort of great evil. It supports real people and families. No one should have their hard work STOLEN from them regardless of your so called sharing philosophy. I don't care hoe you spin it. Piracy at it's core is stealing!
If you plan to continue on with boring and stale generalizations, for chrissakes get your stereotypes correct. Next time tell him to gtfo back to: Phrack #warez1 his local 10 node ringdown running skriptz browsing rmrs1981 packs operation Sun Devil being the king of NYNEX crash over1ding crackerjacking lulz dudez when we pretend that this dude is singing about pir8ing it's omfghighlarious. also liek GNU can go screw itself, and so can the people who support it.
If i would be a dude making games i think i would be pretty pist of folks that played them and didnt gave me something in return. In my book thats unfair regardless of what some say. If i work - i get payed. If i buy a new tv - i must pay for it. Aint that the same thing as playing a computergame? EDIT: One more thought from me. If i was some bigtime übercriminal that made a really clever job and making millions of dollars on some crime, i think i could somehow live with that. But not paying for a silly iphonegame that cost one buck is kind of beating a kid or an old folk. Its just really low. I dont see how you could justify it in any way?
yikes sorry guys i was kinda "discombobulated" when i wrote that i was just playing the devils advocate but thx for reading the whole thing ImNoSuperMan and @hodapp im only 24 newgroups are a little before my time watch this documentary on piracy-- http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=3011602580477307231&hl=en-CA# if your interested in what a resource based economy is all about read this wonderful essay by Jacque Fresco -- http://www.thevenusproject.com/a-new-social-design/essay and at least support this revolutionary piece of legislation while your at it -- http://www.ronpaul.com/on-the-issues/audit-the-federal-reserve-hr-1207/ if you have some free time check out some alex jones documentaries (and actually check the facts) oh and watch some george carlin vids on youtube as well so you can laugh about it because you know its true the point is -- information wants to be free the only thing holding it back is the economy we live in which is basically a pyramid scheme anyways price tags are limitations choice is an illusion subservience is the truth or so it would seem if you look hard enough...... you want a rant check this out what gives you the right to put information in a box and force everyone to pay for it? because you worked hard on it? if you put all that hard work and effort into something wouldn't you want to share that with as many people as possible? wouldn't you be absolutely thrilled if millions of people where sharing and talking about your works of art? oh but you need to make a living right? is that piracy's fault? isnt it the economies fault? isnt that the whole point of the economy to force people to work for a living? suffice to say if you didn't have to work for a living if everything was provided freely without limitation nothing holding you back would you still be against piracy? or rather against the sharing of information between individuals freely with no limitations? and thats why im a philosopher that philosophizes why i love philosophy i cant afford to pay attention because i have been trying to make sense out of non-sense since 1985 yet still im confused about the who the what then when there where and the why.....i dont know all the answers but at least i keep an open mind and as far as the developers who are being effected by piracy i really do feel sorry for them and if i had the money i would most def give them enough to where they would never have to work another day in their lives so they can focus on what they love doing the most in fact if i could create money out of thin air like the fed does (the only thing that gives it value is the amount of it in circulation) i would give everyone enough money so they never had to work another day in their lives so everyone can focus on what matters most to them in fact i would even pay for everything so they can learn whatever they want to learn have healthcare food water shelter everything they needed to live and become a better person so they can reach their fullest potential on their own terms so that everyones life can be measure by their achievements their accomplishments not measured by how much wealth an individual can acquire thats sooo shallow and superficial just what are we? money machines? is that the point in life? see how much money you can make before you die? psssh i think not
LOL. Didnt expect that in a gaming forum. Anyways, you see, we (human race) are quite lazy and always opt for the easier thing to do. Now which according to you will be easier or somehow doable.. Change the economies of the whole world and delete the word "money" altogether. Or.. Try and reduce(and somehow remove) piracy from appstore. Or atleast show our support to devs by saying we dont endorse piracy here at TA. Since we cant change the world economy (not that it`s too hard, just that we`re too busy gaming on the iDevices to devote the time elsewhere), the only option is to try and reduce piracy from appstore. It`s getting seriously disgusting to imagine people would pay 100s of dollars on an iDevice but wont pay 99cents for an app. It`s an app. Not food/water which one cant do without. If you find it worth the money then pay, or else you can simply opt to not download it at all. How hard is it to resist something which isnt even worth a few cents.
hahaha its all good man I'm just playing the devils advocate here and venting a bit I'm not that heartless I do understand it's getting crazy and I think it's awesome that you guys are supporting the devs but on the other hand don't expect piracy to go away anytime soon unless of course you plan on censoring the entire Internets prohibiting the freedom of sharing information without limitation between individuals (peers) you lose any of that freedom then the neutrality will cease and the internets will become a very different kind of platform right in front of your eyes
We dont need to censor the whole interwebz. If someone (you listening Apple?) could take an action against these websites hosting pirated apps (sue them, cripple their sites, sue the servers or tell Dexter if all else fails ) I`m pretty sure piracy will be reduced quite a bit. One of the biggest reason people are pirating iPhone apps is that it`s too damn easy. If these sites are removed then there`ll be only one option remaining for pirates and that`ll be Bit torents. With almost 30 billion dollars in Cash, if apple cant do anything about it then I think it proves that they simply dont care about appstore devs and are too short sighted to see how it`s going to doom the appstore in the long run.
@ImNoSuperMan in app purchases for free apps should help out a bit but on the flip side for devs not willing to embrace micro-transactions they could of course copy the big media companies and come together and forge an NON PROFIT COMMUNITY DRIVEN RIAA-ishh organization against the pirating of iphone apps with the resources to issue DMCA notices and pursue legal disputes on behalf of indie devs everywhere but then again that hasn't been very effective for the big media companies either so your back to a cat and mouse game not that i claim to understand the intricacies of software engineering but im wondering if social layer services like plus+/openfient/ect or a similar add on internet connected service dreamed up just for anti piracy endeavors could help out a little to authenticate or a least tell if a device is running a pirated copy and lock it down remotely from the servers to the device and/or remotely signal code to execute locally already ready to go in the download that will basically turn the game into a lite version with an upsell but thats assuming somewhere someone will not figure out a way to just remove that bit of code completely nullifying it unless its built into the framework and the person actually has to rewrite some code in the process just to get it to work....idk just a thought oh and thats assuming you force gamers to have a persistent connection to the web in order to run the app/game
oh and just so you know its not the "worlds economies" its one economy all one big global monetary scam eventually you will realize its more or less all the same people running the show...worldwide then you'll understand where im coming from and why i have to "vent" a lot especially when the issue of piracy is being debated sure it will take nothing less then a global coordinated peaceful protest the likes of which the world has never seen but its not impossible and if you can organize that or at least try then i promise you in the near future piracy will be a non issue but dont take my word for it...find out for yourself
I just want to post something here since we're the devs that originally posted the article. If you actually read through the article, we pretty much are approaching this sensibly and understand that piracy is just a fact of life, even if it is depressing. At least read the conclusion part if you don't believe me. Now this is really to all those who keep asking us what gives us the right to expect money, and those who support this 'everything should be free' philosophy: 1. We paid (out of our own pocket) for the art. The artists (I am assuming) have a family or bills to pay, so we already helped them there. 2. We spent our free time for the last 6 months (we have full-time jobs that have nothing to do with games) on developing our game. 3. We pay taxes to the government on the revenue we make off these apps. So we are giving back to society through our own labor. 4. The money we make from this game will fund further projects and hire more artists. These are the facts. These are not unique to our situation. Every single developer out there does this. If you want to steal the game (any game), go ahead and feel free to justify your action in any way possible. It really doesn't matter since you weren't going to buy the game in the first place right?
Just wanted to thank those who joined the TA against Piracy group. Its actually heart-warming to know that you guys are behind developers.
You can't beat pirates. It is a waste of money and it makes you enemies. Throwing money and lawyers at piracy sites is just pissing in the wind. It is better to figure out a system to monetize yourself in the face of piracy. Adapt or die. I don't agree with piracy, but I don't necessarily disagree with it either. Things are always far more complex than made out to be by hardliners. One interesting example is here. Add to this that these apps are an infinite resource very much unlike stealing a physical item from a store, and you find that while pirating isn't good it isn't exactly what some people claim it is either. That said, I have precisely zero pirated apps. I also find it interesting that some people here advocate violating Apple store policy and starting accounts in other countries as opposed to pirating. Somehow it is ok to do this because Apple is a big company I guess? One thing I am sure of is that Apple didn't create separate app stores for fun and complication.
warning this rant brought to you buy sleep deprivation...because sleep if for goobers @knight awww your last comment almost makes me want to let you slide a bit but im sorry your previous post kinda called me out, i truly mean no disrespect with what im about to say and i sympathize for the devs who are effected by piracy i wish this was a perfect world but its not which is why we need to continue to try and improve it as much as we can and i promise you i haven't pirated nor do i intend to pirate any iphone app/game p.s -- stop feeding my trollishness please i need some sleep...... A) taxation without representation - the illusion of giving back to society because your a taxpayer yet billions of dollars just disappeared without a trace when we bailed out the bankers wonderful isn't it? oh and in case you haven't heard federal income taxation is a fraud and its unconstitutional google Robert L. Schulz B)providing jobs like a capitalist nation err i mean fascist nation with a cash fascination or rather clocking into a dictatorship yea that really empowers us to live up to our fullest potential each and everyday we are told what to do and how to do it not to mention we are constantly competing with each other over jobs promotions and raises which leads to what you see is what you get a materialistic society with the help of mass media marketing and overbearing consumerism yea im a G5 owner biizatch (that statement made as a generalization) C)last but not least im not trying to justify "stealing" anything im simply pointing out that being able to share information freely without limitation and no discrimination of said information is a freedom that should be cherished embraced and protected preferably amended into the constitution besides you just cant make up laws as you go along to say this content can be shared this content cant be shared thats censorship you can say this content is legal and this content is not but if you feel that censorship is the answer and start allowing the government to create laws to prohibit the sharing of this content and that content but allow this other content over here to be shared freely thats just asking for trouble down the road you can either share information freely or you can only share what they allow you to share there is no grey area in fact the logic behind copyright law is flawed its a concept that can not scale its impossible today there may be somewhat reasonable copyright laws but tomorrow or eventually in the near future they will get RIDICULOUS thankfully we at least have the concept of "fair use" and "creative commons" to balance it out for now but then again what do i know im still trying to figure it all out ip copyright law is like trying to "continue" to monetize our collective intellect knowledge art culture and history even in the information age you would think that by now an open society uber connected would prefer to share information freely as that in its self is improving society you would think that people would generally be more smarter more knowledgeable more diverse if our intellectual prowess would not be slowly succumbing to arbitrary financial barriers which is like making up some laws just to ensure people can make money LOTS of money from selling ideas....... BRILLIANT!!! look im not trying to justify anything im trying point out the hypocrisy of claiming "piracy" is the problem when its blatantly obvious that the perpetuation of the monetary system in the 21st century even after the information age is the problem piracy is anomaly that the powers that be are trying to contain by making up laws that enforce censorship and i have no clue if anything i just typed actually makes sense....... ok this is the last rant i promise i got all out of my system now
again, i have to ask, why does it have to go any deeper than if you don't pay, you don't play? making these apps are people's jobs. it takes countless sleepless hours to create these things. yes, it in fact takes work, time, and very often money just to get one of these things out. you're using their product without compensating them for it. it's very much akin to your boss walking up to you, thanking you for your work, and then ripping your paycheck up and telling you to go home and get back in the morning to do it all over again. for months. they got your work, and you didn't get shit in return. awesome, right?
hahahaha so true so true sorry for the crazy rantness guys I didnt mean to hijack this thread I apologize D
I didn't know this thread existed. I should probably check the General Game Discussion more often. I pretty much only have one thing to say. Pirates blow. Not the cool peg-legged, eye-patch wearing, ship sailing, hook-handed ones because those ones rule.
I use this link to browse TA. All the sections combined in here http://forums.toucharcade.com/search.php?do=getdaily
because the world is not that shallow things are not always black and white things are not always as they seem think about that statement I don't pay I don't play that is a barrier an arbitrary finacial barrier preventing me from whatever it is you want to make money from monetizing our needs monetizing our intellect I can monetize the air you breath by taxing your carbon emission when you exhale breath think about the word job it's your job to do what you are told sure you can make some suggestions rise up on the totem pole but your job is to fufil a task given to you by your employer and if you don't you get fired sure YOU have choice and opportunities but not everyone has the same opportunities so what's the point I say if everyone can't have the same expectation in life as me then the monetary system is a pyraimd scheme think about piracy it's the abscence monetization the power of the people who can share information freely that my friend is an anomoly that needs to be stopped immediately so we can continue being subservient to men with the most money/power call it theft call it stealing call it what you want but for now the people have control of a distribution model and appently they like to share content who would have thought?
