Hey, don't forget Hero of Many! I finally got it and it's fantastic. Looks like it's been forgotten since its release, but I read posts saying it was a GOTY contender. Might have to change up my list to include HoM and Futuridium.

If Cartoon Network asked Defiant to make the game, cant be counted. But if it was Defiant approaching CN with the idea then it counts (Indie going to a publisher). But I dont know what happened so I will leave it there :D

So far I've nominated 9 indies - I'm going to revise my post with a 10th one but can't make up my mind.

I completely forgot that Time Surfer was released back in January... and seeing as how Epoch 2 has quite a few nominations, I had to remove it from my list and get Time Surfer at least one nomination.

Damn this year was outstanding for indie devs...

I nominated Time Surfer aswell ! And after playing all 10 games I nominated again, I have to say that Time Surfer is my GotY. I love it, it's like Tiny Wings but waaay better. It got updated regularly with many different modes and gc-achievements. I'm still trying to get anywhere near your score in normal mode :p
I get goosebumps everytime I reach full speed, this sounds crazy but it's true. Probably the best endless "runner" I've ever played.

Honestly, I don't see why the Indie Game of the Year couldn't have just been picked from the GOtY thread. Whichever game that comes in with the votes that qualifies within this threads criteria could have been picked from that thread and be done with it. I've read through this thread in its entirety and honestly I can't actually agree with the criteria here. Its seems to stack the deck for stackings the deck's sake which to me is a disservice in my opinion, alluding to admitted lack of faith in the community and in an indie developers ability to have product standout on its own accord. If a game is genuinely great it doesn't matter if it has fan appeal, marketing or what have you; it will stand up on its own accord. Quite honestly we are already seeing that happen in the current Game of the Year thread with Games like Oceanhorn. Perhaps we should just go the full gamut and have a port of the year thread or a big publisher game of the year thread as well, since we are to exhibit such a lack of confidence in the community and indie developers. In short; its like saying to indie developers that we don't think their games are actually good enough to compete, so here's a leg up...

Most people vote for games they like, regardless of their pedigree. I'd vote for Xcom but wouldn't even consider a Final Fantasy game; I'd not even give Badlands a nod because I thought it a boring game that rode largely on its art direction but I'd totally consider Device 6. I do so because the games are genuinely good, not because of their history. It's not like this site is frequented and posted on by the random passers by. We have, for the most part and honest community here; one that doesn't consist of the random lookiloo like some big popular game sites.

Also, we have to consider that having large console/PC quality games is all well and good but folks like me that prefer that quality and sizable games on this portable platform are a vocal minority; I feel most people will still vote in large for those more bite sized games because that is what the platform is more catered to. Having GTA on the go is all well and good but at the end of the day most gamers are going to spend their time on those pick up and put down games. In any case, I don't think folks will just vote on a games pedigree alone. But anyway here's my list; I feel as if I'm just dredging up old debates at this point:

    Starborn Anarkist
    9th Dawn
    Oceanhorn
    Knightmare Tower
    Tiny Thief
    Warhammer Quest
    Overlive
    Junk Jack X
    Lords of Waterdeep
    Breach & Clear

    Updated!

    In no particular order:

    Kinetic damage
    République(not that indie right?)
    Drive on Moscow
    Empire
Lords of Waterdeep (okay I am a sucker for board games)

Does Lords of Waterdeep count as an indie game? If so, I'd add that to my list as well... In fact I'd add a couple of boardgames for that matter!

Honestly, I am not sure for the case of LoW:

    1. This is not a major port from other platform (except physical game, ie).
    2. It is not developed or distributed by the major players listed (except it is licensed from WotC).
    3. It is kinda vague for Playdek.
    4. Well it is not on any electronic platform that I know of.

Actually, I think the nomination should not be expansions to previous years titles (e.g. packs for Ascension), or a major revamp of the previous ones (sorry Pacific Fleet and Small World need not apply).

I'd agree to that too... I love Small World (own the physical board game for years in fact) but I wouldn't consider Small World 2 a current year release. To me its just a major update to get the game closer to the actual board game.

Great lists coming in! And five more days of nominations so make sure to post and/or edit your original posts....

Gotta carve out some time this weekend to try out undeadcow's Excel system for racking the totals up. It'll be interesting to see the differences or possible lack thereof between this and the main poll when all is said and done.

I think this is the same list as my general GOTY list because apparently all this year's great games are indie games for me. I note that I only have a first-gen iPad, so my choices were a bit more limited this year, and my list reflects that.

    Bobbing
This was so incredibly hard, but because of frequent checkpoints never too frustrating and it really felt good to finish a level. I even finished the game at one point, but then the wonderful devs kept making more levels. Awesome game.

    Plasma Sky
I never played shoot-em-ups before and I love Plasma Sky for introducing me to the genre. The graphics are wonderful (even on my old device) and for a while I played this constantly. It's beautiful in it's simplicity.

    Badland
Okay, I'm sure this doesn't need any explanation. I love it when games are something special. I really felt connected to the blob-y character, which is a remarkable achievement of the devs. Beautiful game and I'm happy to see that it did so well.

    Paint it Back
You might think it's hard to make a Picross game stand out, after all, it's just a puzzle game, but this one really nails what a good Picross game should be, in my opinion, and I haven't found anything comparable on the App Store yet. I only wish there were more of it.

    Hyper Breaker Turbo
I don't like brick breaker games. They're too random for me, I want more control. So, it's very surprising that I loved Hyper Breaker Turbo as much as I did. I love the style (there are 3 different "worlds" with different styles) and the level designs and I discovered that these kind of games can be really fun.

    Ninjin
You might think that it's yet another runner, but this one is different (it's also not endless - there are 5 stages with bosses) and I really found it a lot of fun. I loved the personality of the game, with lots of little touches in the design that made it stand out. There is no consumable IAP and all the items are easily earned through playing. The game is free to try, and I see no reason not to at least try it.

    Crabitron
I thought I was fed up with endless games with consumable items, but Crabitron changed my mind. It was just so much fun. Sadly the game became incompatible with my iPad 1 when I got better at it (too much items on the screen was too much to handle) so I don't recommend it for that device, but I still really loved the game while it lasted and if I ever get a newer device Crabitron will be one of the first games I'll install on it.

Started doing some number crunching and still need to double check what I have so far, but while there's some common games, one thing cool to see:

101 different games have been nominated!

So we at least didn't just follow the leader on this list. Four more days of nominations!

Tally thus far (subject to additional confirmation when I come up with the final poll -- and of course, any new noms in the next three days). There's 12 vying for the top 10 spots so hopefully so additional nominations will sort that out or we'll have a shorter list. I personally have not nominated, but fell as if it would be unfair if my nominations would affect the top 10 as the organizer of this (and they would :) ).
