Boson X, Slayin and EPOCH.2 are the top 3 best indie games for me from 2013, so it's only natural i had to vote for Boson X here. The titles that made the poll comprise a fantastic list! Cheers!
9th Dawn for me An epic old skool Ultima style RPG. LOVE IT. This was one game i was playing non stop, i've done the main mission now and the side quests but i'm having fun just exploring and trying to battle some of the dragons in the nightmare hard areas. Cant wait for the sequel, this was such a brilliant game, a huge world to explore.
Ditto for me. It was a tough choice as I own all of the games that made it on the list, my favorite being 9th Dawn, Starborn Anarkist, Quadropus Rampage, Oceanhorn and Continue?9876543210... Ultimately 9th Dawn won it for me with Starborn Anarkist being a close second. I just couldn't get into Boson X or Badlands, beyond their art direction they just didn't offer anything in the way of gameplay that I felt made them GotY material.
While enjoying the Game of the Year voting festivities, consider ho[ping over to Touch Arcade forums' weekly Game of the Week polling and talk about a few recent releases. Come check out the hot new releases. http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=215467
Wow, dead heat between Badland and Oceanhorn, both of which are doing pretty well over in the main GoTY thread as well (looking like a competition between those, X-Com and current leader Warhammer Quest). It would be ironic if either Badland or Oceanhorn won both polls, but in my eyes, even if they did, this poll put the spotlight on 7 other indie games that didn't make the top 10 in the main GoTY. It actually encouraged me to finally get 9th Dawn (great game so far -- although I'm still getting used to the controls and dying more than I should be).
I found it difficult to choose between Plasma Sky and Badland, the two games of my nominations that made it. I voted for Badland because I hope it has a chance of winning. It was definitely the most memorable game for me this year, and I must admit I was a bit cynical about it at first (it looked so artsy and I wondered if that was all it had going for it). Plasma Sky was awesome too though, it introduced me to a new-for-me genre and I had a lot of fun with it. I love the pick-up-and-play ness of it. You could play it for five minutes, or for hours on end.
I voted for Quadropus Rampage; but was really torn between it and 9th Dawn. Ultimately 9th Dawn has some balance issues that let it down a bit despite being totally "epic" (I can't wait for 9th Dawn's successor). Quadropus Rampage is so filled with wit, frantic action, and endless swarms of enemies it eeked out a win in my head. Maybe with my help Quadropus Rampage will come in 6th place instead of 7th place. I really need to play Continue?9876543210; I almost feel guilty voting without really being sure about that one. Starborn Anarkist is fun... but too similar to Red Nova (which had better space physics and a better more serious plot with rescue versus attack play styles), and I think SA benefits too much from being a recent release versus a zomg top 10 all time great indie game in 2013. ...all this because there's no option to vote for WazHack, Kingturn Underworld, Dungeon Plunder, or Dungelot.
It's nice to see Continue up there tied for 4th. I do wish it did a little better, but still, with as abstract as it is, it's a pretty nice placing. I never got into Badland. I've played the first day and it just didn't really have anything that kept me coming back to it. That was back when it first came out. I haven't tried it since it's been updated with a bunch of new content... I guess I should re-install it and see if I can get into it this time around.
Ended up voting for 9th Dawn. There's just not many games with this feel to me. As mentioned..there's some balance issues (especially end game for me), and the inventory system is cumbersome (like games of old)..but man..the game is just fun to me.
Same for me... I'm usually pretty objective and can understand why there is an overwhelming amount of favor for a game even if I don't share it for a particular game, but with Badland it just seems a curiosity to me as I just don't see the mass appeal it seems to have on others. Sure, it has nice art direction and some solid mechanics but to me it just doesn't scream awesome to me...
I'd love to vote for ocean horn , but I've only tried that and badland, so it wouldn't be fair for the other games I haven't tried EDIT : I also played mikey hooks
I don't feel the same. Badland combined the side scrolling mechanic of jetpack joyride with the hazards of a platformed and unique artwork . Oceanhorn was better IMO , though
I accidentally vote Badland. I dont know what happened, but I was trying to vote Oceanhorn and my vote went to Badland. Though it doesnt matter much. Both of them are great games.
Does this mean most of those who voted for WHQ in the GotY thread voted for Oceanhorn in the IGotY thread? What's funny is that Oceanhorn isnt even in the top 3 of that GotY thread. That said, I am happy the way the poll turned out.
Given that there were 7 games on the main poll that aren't here, including some rather big titles like XCOM, Grand Theft Auto and Asphalt 8, it could be a matter of any of those votes going to Oceanhorn. So I think that is making a big difference in the polls - with the exception of Badland, which seems to just be very popular and indie. I think this poll did serve its purpose overall, which I'm happy with.
