C'mon, guys. Guardian Sword is something that we wait since Dungeon Raid. Pls, vote for dungeon sword.
Hmm, both Cally's Caves and Guardian sword are very good games, but Guardian sword wins it for me because I just can't put it down!
Wow, just noticed that STO (Special Tactics Online) didn't even get a look-in... that's a bit sad 'cause it's a superb game if you're into Frozen Synapse, Doorkickers, Breach and Clear etc. Edit: just goes to show how important the nomination process is.
My vote went to Cally's Caves 3, I love a good Metroidvania. Thank You to sapphire_neo for posting the reminder in all the game threads and always a BIG Thank You to undeadcow for keeping this thread running.
Guardian Sword for me. That and Hero Emblems are among the very best match-3 RPG available on mobile.
We're a little disheartened that our game wasn't on the list :'( We've released Tap Quest: Gate Keeper on July 24th, and made it to #1 on Hot Games on TouchArcade for a couple days. You can check out the Tap Quest forum here: http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=267015 It's a little late, but do we at least get a mention?
People were asked to vote for their game of the week, the top games voted for then go onto this list. So we cant really add any other entries to it as the top ones have been chosen by forum members
Yeah, long connected levels with boss fights, finding new weapons, little bit of exploration, and platforming as you mentioned. Plus there is leveling and finding new abilities. The only thing really missing is one big interconnected map and the need to back track after unlocking new abilities to gain access to new locations. So I could see it argued either way but it is in my book.
That's the entire essence of the metroidvania genre... without that you're just describing an action platformer.
That's not the entire essence, I take it you haven't played the first Castlevania because it doesn't have a big interconnected map, just one long linear map and no back tracking after acquiring new abilities either. There are several more in the series that also don't feature either of these aspects of gameplay. Not to mention Metroidvania and Castlevania are both action platformers at their core. So....as I said before, I can see it argued either way, so take it easy judge of game genres.
The Metroidvania genre exists in particular because of Super Metroid and SotN, it is not associated with Castlevanias before SotN at all. Here's the Wikipedia article on the genre, and a few excerpts that shine light on what the genre stands for and how it came about. Its definition: About its origins:
I like how you left out this line where they say even just having some elements of the genre make the game a "Metroidvania". "While the word "Metroidvania" is commonly used presently to describe games in this genre, or games that have elements of this genre, " Anyway, I'm done talking about it with you as you aren't going to change how I feel and I'm obviously not going to open your mind. So have a good rest of your week and I'll see you around the forums.
The elements being discussed in that sentence are very clearly elaborated in the remaining article and the excerpts as well. Normal platforming elements are not indicative of the Metroidvania genre and CC3 or the Castlevania games prior to SotN do not contain any of the elements that define the genre. You're free to disagree on the issue but this isn't really a matter of opinion. The Metroidvania genre is a major part of gaming history and platformers in specific and numerous articles from various credited authors have been written on the subject. There is a an absolute consensus on the central elements that define the Metroidvania genre. Edit: I decided to ask Shaun about whether CC3 is a Metroidvania as an outside opinion on the matter, his response,
That's funny you say that because according to Igarashi's list, CC3 is a Metroidvania. "Igarashi, who is credited with setting the core concepts of what makes a Metroidvania title, described what he believed were key elements that makes successful games in the genre. These include:[4] Providing the player with a playable character that is fun and easy to control, so that the addition of new weapons, abilities, and tools will encourage the player to experiment with these new features and incorporate them into their gameplay. Designing maps that encourage exploration but which still guide the player on a main path through the game. This can be accomplished by using secret areas that require new abilities to access, and to quickly provide the player with new abilities and the opportunities to use these abilities in the early portion of the game as to encourage them to continue to improve the player-character. Providing means where the player can be aware of where they are in the game world at any time. This can be accomplished by graphical themes through the game's world, visually unique milestones at key game point, overall map and player status information screens, and the means of moving around the map quickly." Edit: So we'll just agree to disagree. Have a good one.
