As Top-down Space Shooter games (non-scrolling) have been coming thick and fast lately, I thought a little comparison thread might be nice:)

Which are your personal favorites? And why?

NOTE: You can choose more than one on the poll

ANOTHER NOTE: The last 2 poll options should read:
'I'm looking forward to Circuit Strike. One'
    'I'm looking forward to Isotope'
(Sorry, I can't work out how to edit the poll:eek:)

Here are the ones I am aware of:

    [app]Anomaly[/app]
    [app]Belowscape[/app]
    [app]Blue Attack![/app]
    [app]Nano Fighter[/app]
    [app]Spheroids[/app]
    [app]Stellar Blaster[/app]
    [app]2079[/app]

    Upcoming:
    Circuit Strike.One
    Isotope

    Have I forgotten any?

I have Blue Attack and 2079. I personally like Blue Attack a lot more becuase it has a lot more depth. 2079 is a fun pick up and play game and online leaderboards are icing on the cake. I'm looking forward to Isotope moreso than CSO because I have no damn clue wtf is going on in the CSO videos I've viewed.

I just downloaded Spheroids. I'm not really that much into shooters but the graphics and arcade style of Spheroids appeals to me.

    Until Robotron...

Blue attack and nanofighter are excellent, nano fighter is only a dollar right now.

Ok, you talked me into it. I'm getting Nano Fighter as well.

Of course, I'm also getting Zenonia... which may spell bad news for these anyway, I hope.

Non-scrolling top-down space shooters was what I was thinking of...

But the Star Trek game is missing. This is definitely a top down space shooter.

NanoFighter is by far my favorite. Easy control, complete test of your reaction speed (and the game's game pad is very responsive), great variety, and simple in an elegant sense. The game would be hard though if your hand/eye/response coordination isn't quick though.

Tried Belowscape, that's prolly the funnest out of the other ones I've tried other than NanoFighter, though it would be more fun if it wasn't limited to a small room (think that's intentional). Just a personal taste *shrug* The game pad's a bit smaller (which is understandable for this game), and I'm not sure if it really interferes with ease of control or not. The ship's responsiveness to control seems a bit slow though, or maybe it's just because the ship itself is slow (speed and turn).

Anomaly is prolly the most boring, just for some reason. Maybe it's personal taste, or maybe it's too easy (you don't even need to try).

Blue Attack is fun, has depth as Vyper said (so does NanoFighter), but it would have been better with an option of a game pad. It's either the accelerometer or a swipe-to-go-that-direction control, and for a precision game like a open stage shooter I really think a game pad, which allows for more precision and responsiveness than the previous two control schemes, would really benefit from a game pad. That being said, it'd take a lot of experience and patient to use the tilt control scheme.

    I'm missing Splat...
Its like NanoFighter and Belowscape, but with dynamic music (the more power-ups, the more music) and an interactive background (each creep killed colors the background and each hit on the ship blackens it).

    There's also a thread

EDIT: I also like Spheroids and Belowscape because of their retro-grafix-style

I think that's a scrolling space shooter isn't it? I am trying to keep scrolling shmups (be they side or forward scrolling) out of the list. They feel like a different genre to me because of the scrolling aspect.

I am split on Splat;) It's not really a space shooter, although it does fall into the non-scrolling spec.

Well, even if I wanted to add it to the list, I can't, as it seems you can't edit the poll:( Am I wrong?

Sorry for sounding biased, but my game Archangel: Fate of the Galactic Commonwealth is a top-down shooter at its core, but it does involve free roaming to other sectors and has a different control system than a lot of others.

    McDonalds! French Fries anyone?
At that place... with those... people...
Isotope all the way. Speaking of which, is it worth it to get CS.one?

CS.one is dripping with theme, and used to be a lot more unique before they caved in and added the dual-stick controls.

I've got almost all of the aforementioned games in this thread, and Isotope is the only one I play regularly. Occasional play goes into Nano Fighter, Blue Attack! and Anomaly. (I'd play Anomaly more if my fighter didn't jump over the walls occasionally.)

Another game that I liked that is not mentioned above is Asteroid BBQ, which is on the cheezier side of these games, but has fantastic control (Nano Fighter is the king of fantastic control of twin-stick fighters, IMHO).
