Mag: I'm just wondering, how is that you know when we heard about TD games? I mean, unless you know us personally. Are you bragging? I just don't see the point. Unfortunately I'll have to read your witty response when I wake up in the morning.

Am I wrong then? Did you play it on Starcraft?

Hah. Does it really surprise you that there are in fact other players that played Starcraft? I hear it was popular.

And Warcraft, and Age of Empires. All these games had tower defence custom maps, and they were all based off earlier games too (yes, even Starcraft).

It's pretty stupid to say that you are "bored" of an entire genre, since almost every iteration tries to bring something different to make it interesting. That's also why you've likely bought so many TD games on your iPhone.

I like TD games a lot, so it is very difficult to choose only five. The 5 games that I have played the most are:

    The Creeps
    Defender Chronicles
    Fieldrunners
    Sentinel
    Battlefield

As of now I own almost all the TD games in the store, with the exception of 3-4 or the ones not listed. The majority of the TD's in the store are good. I didn't think any of them are really terrible, but obviously some are better than others. Here is my list starting with my top 5 and then my rating for the rest...

    1. Elemental Monster TD- 9.5/10 Great theme, atmosphere. Cool action, animations one of the best.
    2. Sentinel 2- 9/10 SciFi Goodness for sure one of the best tower defense games, starts off real real easy though, great atmosphere and music
    3. FieldRunners 9/10 Arguabley the best only real negative is sometimes when things get too frantic and there are towers all over the place the screen resembles what might happen if a bunch of fireworks were set off on top of a junkpile.
    4. The Creeps!-9/10 Goofy and lots of fun solid gameplay bosses one of the best
    5. Besiegement- 9/10 One of my favorites Good gameplay plenty of content.

    Geodefense-9/10 quality gameplay,
Defender Chronicles- 8/10 Good presentation, story, 2d sideview is not really my thing for TDs when you have to move around map/screen too much.
Staunch Defense- 8.5/10 Great gameplay, mediocre graphics
Ninja TD- 8.5/10 underrated, most first impressions are that the game is mediocre but its really not, as you keep playing the gameplay grows on you, the game is kind of a hidden gem.
Sweetwater Defense- 8/10 Good music, gameplay, atmosphere...gets challenging
Sentinel- 8/10 Great but not as good as sequel, mostly dark setting. great atmosphere, music
Bloons TD- 7.5/10 Popping balloons, balloons, and oh yeah...balloons Fun theme but nothing too great.
Critter Defense- 8/10 Good cute theme, better than average gameplay, enough content to satisfy. Looking forward to a sequel hopefully
Star Defense- 8.5/10 3D well polished good gameplay refreshing from the traditional TD
Garden Wars- 8.5/10 Surprisingly good gameplay, but game crashed on me several times
7 Cities- 8/10 Portrait mode, solid game.
Battle Zone- 7/10 its ok but doesn't stand out
Crystal Defenders- 8/10 too expensive for what you get compared to other TDs in the store that are the same or better quality, but gameplay is good
Tri Defense- 5/10 I wasn't crazy about this one, generic feel to it
Magical Tower Defense- 6/10 Feels low budget, gameplay not bad, placing towers not as smooth as others
Dragon Slaughter- 8/10 Flashy, nice presentation solid gameplay
Tower Madness- 6.5/10 Its ok. big graphics
A bugs defense- 5/10 Mediocre at best
    Moonlight Minions- 7.5/10 Decent
Vector TD- 7/10 Boxey feel to it, good gameplay but nothing extraordinary.

I've played a fairly significant amount of TD on the iPhone.

    1. Creeps (frankly by a pretty large margin)
    2. GeoDefense
    3. Defender Chronicles
    4. Geo Defense Swarm
    5. Fieldrunners
    6. Star Defense

I also really liked iTD, Sentinel, Tower Madness, Ele Monster, and a few others. I played Bloons and Vector TD on the computer and will probably get both of those eventually, although neither would be in the top 5.

To be honest though, I would delete every TD game I own before getting rid of Creeps. It's easily my favorite TD of all time, and I'll be knee deep in it again when 1.4 comes out.

based on this I would say that you just love the genre. Some of these IMO are a waste of time even putting on your phone.

Really? I have the updated version and it's my favorite, as it incorporates RTS features (airstrikes, storms, 2x ammo, etc.) and by no means is it a walk in the park. Also tower firing choices (aim for the weakest, fastest, or strongest enemies).

    Top 5:
    1. Navy Patrol: Coastal Defense (Check out the free version!) Not the best graphics, but best gameplay.
    2. GeoDefense: Extremely difficult/addicting, keeps you on your toes, and amazing graphics, but sub par tower AI.
    3. Defender Chronicles: Lots of people have posted its qualities.
    4. Fieldrunners: A classic and staple in iPhone TD.
    5. Sentinel series: Both great, sci-fi set up with cool weapons and nice graphics.

    1. Besiegement: Has more content than most of the competition.
    2. Staunch Defense: I just bought this, so I'm a little biased toward it now, but it's very deep for a TD game.
    3. 3-in-1 TD Gamebox: Actually has only two working games (Garden Wars and Dragon Slaughter), but if the devs fix the Battlezone glitch and adds more games as promised it will be great.
    4. Fieldrunners: Is really polished, but the evil DLC is annoying.
    5. Defender Chronicles: Not a true TD, but fun anyway.

IMO, the Creeps is almost one of the best TD games on the app store. Great production values, interesting maps, fun graphics, cool sound effects, etc etc, etc.

the only real problems it has (and its a biggie) is that it is too easy. Each version that comes out had made it more rich and varied, but still really easy. I have yet to play a map that I didn't win on the first try.

I just don't find it entertaining to have the challenge be, "can I win this without letting a single creep go by".

All this is IMO, but if the difficulty on this is ramped up in 1.4, this will be one of the best TDs on the App store.

Why don't you just pretend that they came out with Fieldrunners 2 for $1.98. The two new maps are good enough that its as good as many other TDs out there. If you pretend that way, you can get over being upset that the developers are in this to make money, rather then just altruistically just making games for the good of all mankind.

How is this not a true TD? What would you call it instead?

  15. That will change :)
2 of the 3 level packs are for expert players, the third is for casual players (easier levels).

It's interesting that I've heard that the game is too easy and also that it's too hard (just read some of the user reviews on iTunes!). I guess it's just somewhere in the middle. Hopefully the level packs will have something for everyone!

Are the level packs paid DLC? I have no problem buying extra content, but may I suggest that you include at least one hard map as part of the basic app. That way people can see if hard is hard enough.

    No particular order here.
    geoDefense
    The Creeps!
    geoDefense Swarm
    Fieldrunners
    Defender Chronicles
however i was debating putting Vector TD in, but it doesnt match these elite TD games.

Oh yeah and is Bloons TD really that good? Doesn't look it from the screens,

    1. GeoDefense - i think the difficulty curve is so perfectly tuned. it was just hard enough to frustrate me but not hard enough to make me give up. very satisfying when i found the strategy required to beat a level.

    2. Creeps (tie) - i overlooked this based on the screenshots at first. i thought it looked cheap. i ended up getting it after exhausting all other TD games I could find. I ended up appreciating the art style. It's also a good challenge with a lot of game modes.

    2. Defender Chronicles (tie) - you have to admire the amount of free content they have added since release. i love the rpg elements. at first glance, i didnt see how a 2d platform TD game would work, but it seems so clear now.

    4. Geo Defense Swarm - the sequel didn't grab me as much. to me it felt the difficulty progression wasn't as tuned as the original. i got stuck on levels i felt i shouldn't have and easily beat others that should have been more challenging.

    5. Fieldrunners - quintessential td game for the platform. the new maps have got me playing daily again

i have looked over bloons td many times because i didn't care for the graphic style. but i am going to go pick it up now based on the overwhelming support here

you'll dig it, judging by the other td games you like, this is right up your alley. perfect endless mode along with a set level mode.
