dunno about you, but with a good 10-20 fresh new card/puzzle games added to the app store on a daily bases no wonder theres so much crap in the store to sift through. do we really need all these games?

i appreciate the Touch is ideally suited to making puzzle games but heck, why so many?

    rant over ;)

Think I'll come forward in defense of the puzzle game player as I'am one of them. Just as any other game such as a shooter, platform, etc there will always be newer ones coming out that are a great play and I'm grateful for this. Yea you've gotta sift through some garbage but wouldn't just assume its just card/puzzle games as your post states. There's a lot shooter, platform, etc that are just as bad and many would think they are the ones clogging up the store as well. Guess my rant is over!

I am a MASSIVE puzzle fan on the ipod

in fact all of my 26 apps are either puzzle or word games.

My point being, i am sure at some point in the near future, lots of developers will create lets say music games for a few weeks. Then the next few weeks there will be loads of simulation games.

Puzzle games aim at all ages, i know my whole family play on Bejewled 2 and Collapse! Chaos, i know shooting games mainly appeal to the male hardcore gamers out there.

I think there are definitely more puzzle and card games than anything else right now, and I'd wager it's because they are the easiest types of games to program. It's a quick way for a developer to get a game under his / her belt. I think most mobile platforms tend to see a proliferation of these types of games (I'm not talking about video game handhelds like the DS or PSP). Another reason probably has to do with controls. Pocket PCs and Palms were bad enough for action oriented games, but the iPhone can be brutal unless skillfully programmed.

I think there are so many puzzle games for the iPhone because:

    • the touch interface is ideal for puzzles, and problematic for arcade style games
    • many mobile device users just want something they can play inconspicuously for a couple of minutes while waiting for someone/something

For these reasons puzzle games will continue to be popular on the iPhone.
