You could always convert your music into m4a format! I have around 650 songs in around 1.8 GB with no loss in quality!
It starts slowing down performance if you have less than 1.5GB of free space I think. Mine has around 1.1GB left, and performance significantly slowed down (apps take much longer to load or even close, some lag in apps, apps crash more often, etc).
