I have a 16gb iPhone and it's almost maxed out in storage. I've got about 500mb left. I'm not going to push beyond this so for anything new I want to dl, something else has to go. I've never had it this full though... usually kept 2-3gb free at all times.

Does it slow down performance by having your hard-drive almost completely full? Would I be better served to clear out a gig or two?

Or is it okay to have the hard drive filled close to, or at, the brim?

    Thanks

You should clear off some music or photos, since that is the easiest thing to keep in the library/on your server at home, but not on the phone. If you drop apps, you'll lose saved data. Yes the phone performance in certain apps (games)that require more processor use will be negatively affected with filling to the brim.

Thanks for the explanation, I had a feeling...

That's a good point about clearing music so I don't lose saved data. I think I'll go ahead and clear a gig to be safe. Still waiting on that 3gs upgrade so I can have 32gb :)

My 16 GB 2G iPhone was almost full with just 2-300MB of free space. It does feel quite laggy when there is little memory left. Also it caused some real problems on my iPhone. Every now and then the iPhone would refuse to start up leaving me with no option but to force a complete restore. After that happened too many times I had accepted that there's some hardware fault with this iPhone. As a last attempt I restored my iPhone as a completely new one and installed just about GB if total data on it. Almost a month now and I didn't have to restore it even once. So I do think too little free space does mess up with the iPhone.

Btw, also do note that my iphone is jailbroken and I'm not really sure if that had something to do with this problem. It's still jailbroken so I think that's probably not the reason behind that problem.

I know this really isn't the best option for people out there that're short on cash (I wouldn't have considered it myself if I hadn't lost my iPod and needed a new music player), but if you're a music and/or app afficionado, getting a Nano is a pretty good idea. That way, you have at least 8 gigs dedicated to just your music in a small, sleek form and really won't have to worry about replacing it for at least a couple years. Then have your iPhone dedicated to just being a phone along with game and apps so you won't have a problem running out of memory. My iPod Touch is now a dedicated gaming and web browsing device (only because I thought it was stolen, got a Nano, and suspiciously found it in a hidden pocket in a recliner).

That's interesting. I was getting pretty close to that threshold myself... Good thing I asked!

BTW- I have a jailbroken iPhone too and, knock on wood, haven't experienced any of the problems you mentioned. Hopefully it's not a jb issue but just the storage.

Glad you were able to find you iPod!

That's a good practice and I do actually do the same thing. I have an iPod classic that stores 120gb (significantly more than my stupid laptop) dedicated specifically to music. My iPhone is mainly for games and apps but I have about 3-4gb of my most favorite music because it's always with me and I leave my iPod in the car. I'm just going to have to tone it down a bit with the music until I'm eligible for the upgrade.

    edit: stupid att... :)

Wait. Really. How does my iPhone have 16 GB of memory if it doesn't have a hard drive. Seriously didn't expect this from a senior member on TA.
    FAIL ;)

Everyone knows what he meant. What's the pint if being a smart ass?

Have plenty of space free on my 32 GB iPod Touch, but I find that after I get over 600 or so apps on there it crashes every so often and reboots take a lot longer... :(

Have only had 3.1.2 on there for a few days, will see if that makes a difference or not.

I can't believe people are sacrificing music for apps...
I just did the opposite, i deleted: Real Football, Assassins Creed, Civ Rev and 11 others so i could fit in pearl jam discography, Nine Black Alps album+b sides, kasabian, jimmy eat world, nirvana, AC/DC...
I just found my dad and bro's CDs, so I have been doing some heavy syncing.

    Actual Question Time
I realise (Safari is trying to convince me there is a Z in there) no difference in gameplay in any apps when I had 2gb and 20mb, just saying, you don't need to keep a buffer in their, thats just smelly

C'mon when are you Brits (assuming you're Brittish) going to learn to use the 'Z'? :D j/k

I hear what you're saying. My first thought was to delete apps and leave music but someone pointed out I may lose save data. I already have a regular iPod specifically dedicated to music, so I'm not really losing anything :)

But I'm not sure I agree with your last point. I do think having a buffer is important. I had a feeling before making this thread... and have now corroborated that with a couple others. I'm glad you haven't seen any differences but I'm going to take the 'better safe than sorry' route.

You take our language, kill it and then insult ours

Fair enough, I do have a 20gb photo (oh yeah retro), but turns out battery is a bit dead so it permanently resides with my 360 so I can blare my own tunes

I do have a 1st gen touch, so the difference in slowness is obvious. My younger brother is a huge disappointment, he has filled his ipod with 6gb music (all crap) 4gb vids and podcast, which created an awkward silence and the last 5gb on apps, but he just goes for the big ones say "indie games suck".
He experiences major slowdown, but I just attributed it to bad karma and all, I might be fine cos I don't have too many apps and i turn it on and off a lot (supposedly clears caches or something)
I would give myself a buffer if it didn't mean giving up awesome music and apps, and friends season 7 (200mb!?)

  16. I've noticed a pretty big performance hit with Tap Forms Database when deleting and importing records on an 800+ record database. It got pretty bad when my iPhone got to about 512MB's free. I have since freed up about 2GB's and the performance hit has mostly gone away. (At least the process is about 3-4 times faster now that I have the free space.)

I haven't noticed any issues with games. However, there may be issues with apps that use storage for buffer space like RSS Player or painting apps.

    lol
but still since the iPhone doesn't have a hard drive the amount of space left or taken up has pretty much no impact on performance

To clarify this, it uses flash memory which uses no moving parts, and doesn't slow down no matter how much is put on there. A hard-drive is the exact opposite.

That's true and I should have used the right term. To me (and I realize I may be the minority here) hard-drive vs. flash-drive is semantics.

I understand flash memory is not supposed to slow down no matter what but I suppose I'm just skeptical. It just feels like it slows down when there's more on it and I wanted to get other opinions. It seems as though there are mixed opinions...

Will be interesting if others have more to say on the subject.
