If you'll enjoy having a 5 story tower, then you should do that. I would think that having so little to do would be much more tedious than having more floors and slightly longer elevator rides. If you are constantly grinding for bux, it's possible that you gain bux at a faster rate because of the shorter rides. But otherwise, it shouldn't matter much, and you lose out on the income from more stores/better stores, as well as the extra bux from stocking bonuses. The increased revenue from more floors is dramatic in the beginning of the game, so if you are talking about an optimal setup, I think you should just build as fast as you can until the elevator rides begin to feel tedious. Then save for the first elevator, which doesn't actually take very long. Then build more, and then get the 2nd elevator soon after. I don't find the "Bitizen" search that difficult/tedious, and usually as your tower gets higher, you just start remembering where a lot of people are anyway. Certainly early in the game while you are saving for the 2nd elevator, it shouldn't be too hard to keep track of the names and the jobs. And as others have mentioned, the importance of bux diminishes rapidly, so you don't really need to worry too much about the tedium of the elevator rides or the bitizen searches later in the game. You can just not do them and it won't make a difference (in which case it really doesn't matter how fast your elevator is--you'll probably still want the upgrade for ferrying VIPS, but there's no rush).
We really need a new elevator. Taking people up beyond the 40th floor even with the fastest tower is just painfully slow. Other than that, great game!
I see, I was thinking of the sales per minute wrong. For some reason, I just thought it meant the number of sales per minute, rather than the number of coins per minute. I don't know why, because obviously there aren't that many individual sales per minute. Anyway, that's why I was confused by the dramatic fluctuations in the rate. In any case, a broad plan like only stocking 3 coin items still isn't helpful. The problem is to also optimize the sales while the 3C item is restocking, and then matching those cycles to a sleep cycle. And then of course doing this for every single floor A good example for why this is moot in practice is the Fortune Teller. Assuming 3 dream jobbers, the 3 Coin item stocks 4800 units, and at 8 sales per minute, it sells them out in exactly 10 hours. It takes 2.7 hours to restock--almost exactly the amount of time to sell out the 1350 units of the 2 Coin item. Two cycles of selling each fits almost perfectly within a 24 hour period. You sell the 3 Coin item through the night, wake up and begin restocking the 2 Coin item. 3/4 of an hour later, you stock the 2 Coin item, and begin restocking the 3 Coin item which has now sold out. As soon as the 2C has sold through its units, the 3C is ready and you stock it. Repeat and go to sleep for 9.25 hours. A perfect 2 cycles, profiting you 31,500 coins, and an 18% profit increase from just selling the 3C item. However, if you were to get just one towerbuck from stocking all three items throughout the day along with the other coin bonuses, this drops to like a 5-10% increase. Pretty good for only a few clicks a day, but given that this is the best case scenario, and that the cycles for all the other businesses do not match up whatsoever, it's fairly illustrative. Simply logging onto the game for a few more minutes a day to find some extra bitizens basically offsets any advantage you can gain from micromanaging the stock cycles.
Another thing could be a button that shoots your elevator all the way to the top. Then you wouldn't need a faster elevator until you surpassed 80 floors.
I'm not sure this 38 coin difference is as significant or at least becomes significant as quickly as it seems given you have to spend 1 tower bux to move a floor.
Something I did and found useful is that I moved all residential floors to the lower floors, that way it is easier to check if the other floors are in need to be stocked or not.
I did the opposite, moved them all to the top, since you rarely need to look at them (aside from the "find this person" minigame).
I personally wouldn't move them all to the top because then your going to have to move every floor you additionally build, below them. Which would be very costly. Or not, and leave them halfway, which would annoy me. I like my tower being extremely in order and it really pays off in the long run. I used to have all my shops and apartments willy nilly anywhere, But after I purchased the final elevator upgrade, I started collecting heaps of bux that were basically unneeded as you generate coins quite quickly after 50 floors, So I saved them up until I had about 150 and thought I should use them since they are generating quite quickly and if I desperately need to trade them for coins at the bank I'll do it next lot of bux or if I have remaining bux. So I did a massive overhaul of my tower, moved all the appartments to the bottom floors, then grouped all the shops in colored text order. Also painted all the shops to match their colored text, Then i went on a eviction spree and evicted every bitizin who wasn't a dream job, I then had 70 dream jobbers, not just any shops though, I chose only the shops that have big restocking amounts and that the 3 coin tear takes at least 2hours+ to restock, and found 3 dream jobs per high stock store, and left all the low stocked stores empty/ blackened. I recommend you try to choose even amounts of buisness types to keep your sales equal. But I didn't and I haven't seen a difference, so im thinking that many "demand" is only acounted for if you have uneven business amounts, but doesn't penalize you if a few of those said buisnesses are closed. I then gave each bitizin a uniform to match their dream job/ permanent placement's shop color, if one floor In the "creative/orange" section is dark orange, I'll give the bitizins working on that floor dark orange To match the shade almost exactly, and for some floors I go the extra mile, like optometrist , not only do they require a blue shirt, they also require glasses. This way when the " find a bitizin" Button comes up, it is almost instant for me to find them now, which once took up to 5 minutes hunting around for the buggers. I also try to get my 3 dream jobbers looking like almost exact triplets, since it's easier to associate one face with one floor, and you don't have to pick out the exact bitizin, just the floor. Also when I was evicting and hiring for dream jobbers, I didn't stop once I had three of a kind, if another pops up, I'd put him in the job and collect my 3 bux, and keep the highest scoring number to stay, and thanks to that, almost all my staff are dream jobbers with a score of 9 in their dream job catorgry, giving me a 27% discount on every restock, plus double the goods on all tiers! I now find I don't have to restock anywhere near as much as I used to, Or screw around moving bitizins around to different jobs to restock, I just leave the crappy jobs empty, restock the high jobs, play find the bitizin easily as, and I still leave only 4/5 hotels open also, so ppl are constantly moving in then getting evicted straight away after I use them for their dream job bux! I've also noticed the lower floors get visited more in the elevator move than they did when they were scattered around on higher levels, I know it's supposed to be random, but I without a doubt get more hotel stays in floors 3,4,5 and 6. When my hotels were up as high as 52 they rarely got a visit at all, now floor 3 gets several in an hour. Also, since I have 17 hotels now, the tips aren't wasted on the lower floors , I always get around 40 or higher tip for shop deliveries, Which isn't much, but it adds up over time. And my tower is now all pretty and rainbowy, and needs the absolute least attention to continue making money to build more floors, I rarely have to do anything, I'll check it 5 times a day for 2 mins each time, make sure all floors and restocked/ restocking and by the end of the day I have enough to buy a new floor or two. My only goal is to get one of each floors (100) then in my mind, the game is finished.
It's a wash, either way. Yes, at this point we're only getting a new floor every however, BUT the fact is that when we get back into the game, we are generally just hitting a stock fill/empty button which zips us up to wherever the business is to begin with. Business on top, residences on the bottom is just how it is for me. I honestly don't think it matters either way. I do think it looks better, aesthetics-wise, having the businesses on top. But that's just person preference. As for the color preferences, I think unless you really like customizing, changing each and every floor to different shades/etc of a color just becomes a little bit too much. Because the customization options are so limited, it becomes a bit of a pain. And, again, it's a wash as far as time savings go. I have almost 70 floors, even if I push that 80 or 90, I have what, maybe 10 per? It takes next to no time to push through 10 businesses to check for a bitizen. BUT, the bottom line is by the time you have to worry about this, like with coins, it doesn't matter. See below. Fact of the matter is that I have 372 bux right now. The last thing I want to do is ferry more people around over 60 floors. Beh. ANYWAY - onto my take on things.. Once you get around 40 floors, about 5-7 shops of each type, the best, easiest and MOST profitable solution is this, in my opinion. Have a full 2 floors of residences open, 2 businesses open. Have, maybe, 15 bux available. I did this earlier today because I wasn't doing anything. I started with MAYBE 70 bux. About an hour or two later I ended up with both of those busineses full of 9 stat dream job employees. I also ended up with 372 bux. Yes, it was work. but here's how to do it the easiest way possible. Every store, you remove 1 of each of the employees. That way when you get someone who has a job you need, you toss them into a job and then evict them. You continue doing this until you either fill the 6 open jobs and/or have more bux than you know what to do with. Now that I've got that chunk built up, I can rip through and rush buildings. It allows me to play the game faster, and at my pace. I'm seeing an end in sight with the first run of businesses, and I'm looking forward to that. After a few weeks of playing, I'm now able to just relax and let the game play out. One thing I NEVER worry about, now, is the numbers. If they're in the dream job, that's all that matters. The amounts of purchasing orders are insignificant. And I look at it this way, it just gives you something to do to cycle out your lower-end players and switch in a level 9 and above. But honestly, the dream job shuffle was really when I started to have a bit more fun with the game. I just set aside some time when I have available and just empty out one of each business and run through. It's so much less effort in the long run I really do need to see some additions to this game, though

beware of the 1.2.1 update if you value getting 3 bux for dream job placement. they lowered it to 1 bux. while some of the new features were nice (like sorting bitizin list and no more confirmation dialogue boxes), lowering the dream job bonus from 3 to 1 wasn't worth it for me, so i downgraded back to 1.1. this is clearly a play to get more people to spend real money on in-app purchases, but there are more honest ways of getting people to pay for games. shame on nimblebit.
Ok, I found the answer already after searching the net. But I think I don't want to downgrade again to the previous version, though I am a bit annoyed about losing 2 bux now when giving a dream job. But meanwhile I built so many new floors... I don' want to build and earn all my bux again... What new features are there? I only realized the agent who "delivers" new bitizen... Nothing more... So I stay with the new version... Ah, I wonder all the time: What is wrong with the bitizen which stay in the residential areas all the time? I have a few of them, part of them even have a dream job, but they never work in the shops, they always hang around. Must be "bad for business" somehow... I used to kick a few of them out and employed new ones... But still there are some who never be seen working...
unlike most apps, tinytowers saves its game data in the iphone's keychain. that means you can delete the app from your iphone, restore the Tiny Tower 1.1.ipa in itunes (look in your trash if you updated in itunes), then resync with your iphone. your game should resume from where you left off.
