Game Impressions I played it and had some fun! Sure, it is yet another match 3 that doesn't really revolutionize the genre, but it is fun and has a goofy Halloweeny storyline that will surely keep players going more and more levels to see how it all turns out (and actually presents you with the reasoning behind each level's special objective, like the first timed level where Eyegore needs to match up the body parts quickly before the townsfolk see all of ht body parts that spilled out of his cart after a night of grave robbing). My personal favorite, however, is the Endless Mode which just has you matching groups as long as you can until you run out of moves and bonus items (you start out with a few of these bonus items but can earn more through skillful play). The game even gives you a skill rating at the end but I have a suggestion in this regard in regards to the Story Mode. I suggest no score be recorded until the story has been completed and that there is also no point in any sort of grade before then either. Since the player is free to continue from where they left off of the start of the last level they failed on until they decide to start a new game, reserve the judgment until the very end. When a player is killed off before completing the story (as is likely to happen a lot), they could see what their score was until that point and maybe a message to the effect of, "Your story is far from over...". The reason I suggest this is there is little more annoying than having your local scoreboard filled with a bunch of scores by the same player on the same story run (IMHO). Grrr, I wanted to leave this as an iTunes review but it is telling me I didn't own the game (so what was I playing all morning?).
Glad you are digging the game and thanks for the feedback! On the story mode your score isn't actually saved to the high score screen unless you complete the story. Every time you fail a level you get the grade screen to tell you how you have been doing so far. Once you beat the story if you make the top 3 scores you will get a screen to enter your initials and it is saved. You have to beat the default scores to get your initials on there. So far my highest on Story is 471,960. I am sure some puzzle masters out there can beat it.
I'm taking a guess here, but I'm willing to bet the story cutscenes and fun voice acting for those cutscenes at the start and in between each of the 17 levels takes some serious space.
Why can't you just swipe across the entire screen? That seems like an unnecessary control limitation. A really good example of how match-3 controls and animations should work is Pet Shop Girl-- take a look at it and see how it plays. It's free for the first 7 levels.
It's a totally different mechanic, have you asked PopCap why they did't fix Bejeweled with this same "limitation"?
The large app size is due mostly to the audio. The game has high quality dialog and music tracks. I assume most mobile games compress it down a lot more. It is a tradeoff on size vs audio quality. If you play through headphones you can tell a huge difference. In this game the audio is a main component. My hope was the music would pull you into the game and stay in your head all day.
