I'd say both. Mostly skill and concentration but random cards will come into play eventually which will have you needing a little luck! I wouldn't pass on this game.
Thank you. Spoiler Regarding the non-3 white cards: I am not fixated on any explanation for them. They are either mixed in with the usual stack and it was just immense luck that y2kmp3 got them exactly when he/she needed them or they can happen on any draw and it's just as much luck. If you wish to test your hypothesis, I'd suggest playing specifically to coax out non-3 white cards after your high card is 48 and see if you get noticeably more >6s than others. Again, reasoning by Occam's Razor, I am not in favor of choosing any "it depends on the board"-explanation. That's just a lot of programming/testing effort for an unnoticeable difference where a simple "chose one of the possible spots at random"-solution is so much simpler and easier to implement. y2kmp3 outlined her methodology to test this earlier. I would however have to add a word of caution: if there are 3 possible spaces where a new tile could spawn, one good, one bad and one meh, the chances of it spawning in the good spot would only be 1/3 if the allocation was random. So in order to not skew the results, you really have to only record events where only 2 possible spaces are available. Interesting point but I disagree with you for following reasons: • Dungeon Raid is so much more complicated than Threes! in terms of combination of classes, races, skills, perks and what not that it is much more likely for the developer to have overlooked a game-breaking loophole/combination of variables like you described. Threes! is so simple that a similar situation (broken, endless game) is highly unlikely in my opinion. • The central design of Threes! increases the pressure on you to combine your cards effectively as the game progresses. In other words: your allowed margin of error shrinks continuously. In a late game, a single bad move can spell your end. Even if I knew the "behind the scenes"-mechanic, this would not change. There is still enough randomness and unpredictability left and the margin of error is so small that the entire concept of the game wouldn't just suddenly break down merely by knowing its secrets.
Ok bought the game after finding a video on youtube how the game works and looks like a app that will never leave the ipad.
Sixlock, 6 * 6 * 6! Just joining the conversation. Here's a game that I'm particularly proud of, Sixlock with score 6 * 6 * 6, though admittedly it was more luck than skill. Still in pursuit of that elusive 1536 tile -- high score 27,777 so far. Addictive!
It's hard to tell with those tiny graphics but if you look really closely at that 48 card you will see that it has a trollface.
Getting a bit frustrated here. Read all the posts, but only got the 384 card once and often don't even get the 192. Played a lot and since some people have talked about getting much better scores a lot of the time, I must be doing something wrong. I'm generally pretty good at games (top on Cover Orange HD - also on the iphone version but for some reason it doesn't show up unless I've recently played the game). But I remember even on that game there were things people described that I didn't interpret properly for a long time so maybe that is the case here. So if anyone can provide more explanation of strategies, maybe something will finally click into place for me. I've tried keeping high cards in a corner, on the side (but not corner) and middle, but I pretty much always find needing to move away from any of those strategies - which is why I think I'm misunderstanding something.
DBK, my biggest tip is to slow down and give yourself time to think, trying to put yourself in the best position for whatever card may come after the one that's showing as coming up next. This often means trying to swipe in a direction that brings the next card in to the field of play in a beneficial place, and also focusing on combining smaller cards as opposed to larger ones, especially 1s and 2s. Corner strategy seems to have worked for me recently, but y2kmp3 seems to have a different, and very successful, idea.
Name/description of the 1536 tile? Hi all, I've been playing Threes a lot lately and I love it! I would like to make a fan-text-adventure-type-thing but I basically have no info about the 1536 tile's "personality" (I've seen screenshots of the 3072 and 6144 intros on this thread). I would greatly appreciate it if someone who's unlocked the 1536 could go to the Threes main menu, tap the 1536 tile, take a screenshot, and post it on this thread. Thanks, Jim (P.S. my best is 20,823!)
The highest score I've gotten is about 9600 (and that only happened once). Usually around 3600. I can't seem to get above the 9600 mark no matter what I do. Although slowing down and working to the corner is helping. I took 1 day off of playing for a little break, and played much worse after the break for a few hours. It seems as though you start to anticipate the way to move after a while. This has to be my #1 ios (pad mini) game right now, and is likely to stay on my ipad for the foreseeable future.
I have a bad feeling that I need to actually see good players make moves and explain why - and that isn't practical in a game like this! I do probably play to fast, but when I do slow down, I still don't seem to do well (though I have gotten one more 384 card). I just seem to constantly find myself stuck with blue or red cards coming into the corners and, since I'm usually locked in where I only have two move options near the end, it is just a matter of time (usually a SHORT time, before the color card comes in where I can't match it against the other color. Occasionally I'll get a break and get multiple matches, but that's rare and very temporary for me.
1 small tweak I want in is that the screen can rotate as of now I have to play it with the ipad charging cable at the bottom instead of top, what would work better for me when I'm playing this on the charger
Threes! is like Tetris or Populous. It has got that just one more round quality. I just can't stop playing. I had planned to hit the sack at 7 and it is 10 now...
