CrazedJava have answered the first problem about the devs being "lazy", and about emus, I like playing it portably in my device, so i can play everywhere, and don't have to bring my PC/mac to my grandma's house to play it there.... Maybe that's just me liking to play emulated games portably..
Thanks. I'm getting tired of all the "lazy" comments when people have no idea what goes into software development.
Still don't get the love for game centre ! But it's ridiculous what you say about emulators. Of course we know you can get emulators on PC. What next. You can use a phone at home instead of a mobile ??? People obviously like the portability. Playing in my PC is ideal. But using my phone to play games when Im away or a quick game on my phone when my wife's watching tv is far better than getting a laptop out etc
Well, it's basicly impossible to backup any game's progress with those restrictions implemented in iOS 8.3, none of 3rd party programs works anymore. I tried iExplorer and CopyTrans with no luck. I just found out there's still an option to downgrade back to iOS 8.2, but as I never did anything like that I'd like to ask if I'm gonna lose everything currently on my device or not. I'm just downloading iPad4,4_8.2_12D508_Restore.ipsw for my iPad mini with retina and I'm supposed to do the downgrade via iTunes. I'd highly appreciate if anyone could clarify that my device is gonna be wiped or not by this action. Thanks in advance.
True but you'll have to accept it sooner or later if you want to be up to date even if you dont rush to update your device. There really is no workaround yet and I don't think iFunbox or similar tools will be able to jack inside the documents folder anytime soon if Apple locked it up for good. I don't think they did this accidentaly. Especially with the newly discovered and highly critical 0 day wifi exploit which will probably be fixed in no time there really is no way to avoid that mess if you want your device to be safe.
Apple thinks that people uses ifunbox etc for installing illegal apps, while we here just use that for backing up gamesaves.. I really hate apple for doing that, and I choose not to support them anymore
You cant install illegal app's if your device isn't jailbroken anyways except you're signing them with your very own dev certificate. There really is no need to use something like iFunbox to install them on your device so I highly doubt that pirated apps are the reason for locking us out from the documents folder. Makes no sense. I do know that you can use hacks or modify the behaivor of some apps on non jailbroken devices just by messing around with files stored inside the documents folder and because it is/was accessible for everyone. I guess that's why they have changed it.
I made a similar statement here and was trolled for it. People think they should be able to run whatever version of iOS they choose. The truth is that once Apple releases a new version of iOS all of the old versions are out of date and unsupported. It's what makes iOS great and horrible all at the same time. If you succumb to Apple's way of doing things you'll probably have a pretty good experience. If you prefer to do thing your own way then you're most likely going to be frustrated.
That's really right.. I think apple want us just the way they want it... I'm moving to the dark side next week, and will be back if there's a workaround since i still owns an ipad mini
8.3 is a security fix Developers of iFunbox and other apps that exploited an undocumented security hole CVE-2015-1087 to access files for "backup" purposes really can't complain when that hole is closed. Regular users of iPhones have their banking, password managers, all kinds of private information on their devices. They rely on Apple to make sure that their private data from those sensitive apps cannot be accessed by some random app that purports to be for "backup". I agree with other posters here that its up to developers to provide sync to iCloud, DropBox integration, or some of the other new capabilities from Apple like apps. There's CloudKit now, which is an improvement on earlier APIs and also you as a developer can create extensions that share your apps data out via documents. I also agree that its a lot of work to provide this extra functionality. When you're a solo indie like me pulling 60 hour weeks to build your game, its pretty hard to justify the weeks of extra development time to create these features that just a relatively few power users want. If you are one of those power users who don't worry about your phone being secure, feel free to jump to Android or jail-break. If you have a lot of expertise and time to ensure your device is secure while doing that more power to you. Apple has to protect the vast majority of its customers who rely on them to do the right thing with their data. By the way - its incredibly frustrating as a game developer when you have high-score tables, and in game items that get hacked by folks using these file modification tools. We try to write code to ensure that hacking of items and high-scores is harder to do but its a losing battle. When I hear that Apple is cracking down on this stuff I say "great news" because that just makes me more likely to develop for Apple where my players get a fair shot at high-scores without having to compete with crackers cheating the game. I'm not saying that all users of the iFunBox type apps are cheaters by any stretch. But you who are using it for legitimate backups have to understand the uses that tools like this get put to. Apple has no choice but to close these security holes.
Thanks for sharing the link. Not sure if this 'security hole' is the same as the one iFunbox used. I don't even think iFunbox used an exploit to access the documents folder. I mean, you had access through iTunes anyways and iFunbox worked for years so if this was really an security hole that would mean that iTunes used it, too. Hmm. The Taig Jailbreak team was credited for it so I think it was one of the exploits they have used in one of their latest jailbreak injection routines. Apple had to change how the file system is handled it seems and therefore broke access to the documents folder. Maybe there was no workaround for them to maintain both - fixing the exploit as well as keep access open for backup purposes. Or it really was a quick and dirty fix and they will change it in 8.4+ so we are able to access our documents again.
Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with this if Apple would do what every other worthwhile gaming platform holder does and provide an actual universal solution for backing up save files. It's the least they could do if they're going to insist on making on-device memory non-expandable and absurdly-priced, in my opinion. Just add the option to iTunes to back up and restore the documents file for each app. Encrypt it or something if you don't want people to be able to tamper with it easily. Heck, I'd even accept just having the ability to delete the large app file while still retaining the smaller documents file on my device. I could work with that.
When I bought my first idevice my jawed dropped when I discovered app data was embedded into the App and couldn't be separated. I agree it's very inconvenient. Everyone should post feedback to Apple here: https://www.apple.com/feedback/
See, this is something I can get behind. Plenty of other OS's give access to files while still securing critical things like passwords. Plus, encrypting data is a piece of cake today and has been for awhile. Plus, the other issue a lot of people seem to miss when they demand developers implement very Apple specific functionality is that a lot of apps these days are not iOS exclusives. They're on Android and sometimes even on the PC. A few have made it to Windows Mobile as well. Saying "All developers should implement very Apple specific features" is basically demanding they ignore other markets to cater to just one segment. I'm not sure I'd be too keen on ignoring Android users. Shoot, the two times I've been involved in a release that included a mobile app we not only supported iOS and Android, but we still had a Blackberry release!
Looks like everybody that's got iOS 8 is going to want to update in a few days... http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/04/22/apple_no_ios_zone_bug/
I always hated not being able to drag-and-drop with itunes (plus automatically being considered a lover of U2's dirge-rock), so ifunbox gets used 99 times more than itunes. Seems increasingly likely that I'm going to be stuck on 7.something for ever.
