It's an English dish (normally MUCH smaller). If made well, it's actually pretty good. It's funny, the English (and most of Europe) eat things like this, and for the most part aren't morbidly obese, yet the U.S. is... (see picture)
That's because many americans are obsessive eaters as far as stuff that's bad for them. Meals should be mainly vegetables, some kind of starch, less than 2oz of sauce and 4oz of meat.
Tofu is delicious with a bowl of rice and some japanese pickles. I definitely reccomend it if you want to try something outside of your usual diet. And while tofu is the perfect food, you can't have too much of it, too much is bad. Oh and I don't eat it because I"m a SF Hippie, I just live in a japanese household.
One of my friends from the UK was just over here and I showed him the pic of it, and I asked him what the smaller version of this would be called. Anyway, he said it was really good, but never this huge.
And how long exactly have you lived in this obesity-free country you call England? I can tell you that there is plenty of obesity to go round throughout Europe, especially in the UK. I can look along any street and see 1/3 people overweight, and at least a couple of times per day see someone dangerously obese. Some areas in Scotland (that food is called a scotch egg by the way), the life expectancy is 57 - because of unhealthy lifestyles.
