Give me a reason to justify the 320 games I have for my phone to the missus. I'm kinda poor though, so I'd probably just use a Wordpress or Blogger site. This is a great site and one of the few I visit daily that has inspired me to try to get involved in the scene. I'd like to have an incorporated forum, how do you guys incorporate a forum with your review blog? Any advice for an up and comer?
So many people have tried. Honestly, no one will look at your blog because you'd probably be result #13654 on Google, and even if someone finds it, they're not gonna read a blog hosted on one of those free generic sites.
I really don't think Kijib can handle the reviews... not to be a jerk, but I really don't see you as being an in-depth reviewer...
Well, saying "Don't try it, cause other people have failed" isn't going to dissuade me. I'm fully aware it might just end up being for my own entertainment...which is why I'm going to try and keep it constrained to free resources at the beginning at least. If I have no overhead I have nothing to lose by trying. I personally found toucharcade by looking at quotes of reviews in apps and who they were from...not google. There's a couple reasons I want my own site. One, control. I want to be in charge of whats "OK" to post and to say. I'm a smart ass, and I'm a little crude sometimes and I'm tired of being edited. There are two...no, three kinds of people: those that think I'm amusing, those that are often offended by, and those that are indifferent to my antics. I'd like to create a place for ipeople to go that takes itself a bit less seriously. I'd like a place where it's ok to swear, or post the occassional penis shaped rocketship image without somebody popping a roid. (Yes, my Doodle Flight ship is a picture of my penis.) Think Zero Punctuation reviews over on The Escapist but for iphones and written instead of performed...and not quite THAT crude. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation Funny stuff, check it out if you aren't familiar. Two, I'm a very busy guy and I move at a somewhat slow pace. I have 5 kids and a woman who has NEEDS. They need to come first. Or I die. Three, I have friends who want to be involved. This goes back to control, but I want to be able to appoint the poeple I want to do the things that need doing. Sure, they might suck and or fail miserably but then I have another reason to pick on them mercilessly. I'm an graphic artist, along with a few of my friends, and we're all dads. We might not have the most ground breaking format, or original news, or exclusive sources in the industry or whatever, but I think we'll be able to put our own spin on the mess. I purchased a .com already, just researching my options now and studying the best sites already doing it. Looking for advice from those I admire the most.
Sounds great I'll go I have five kids and wouldn't mind some adult reviews to keep a smile on what ever life I have left
Well, there's already a lot of iPhone review sites. And most people will visit the big sites no the little ones. Then again, TouchArcade started off at little to no views probably, right? Every company does, bit look now TA is very popular.
"I'm gonna do it my way! While all the others, Locke, Jack, Sawyer, Kate, etc.. are off trying to help everyone else, I'm going to sit here and make a raft and try to get out of this inter-dimensional craphole!" Then, you're that extra that gets killed and the whole point of you was to show what happens to those who don't want to play with a team and think they can do it all themselves.
Cuz it's more fun to be arn, blake or eli. Still, I don't think it would be popular and good enough (but I'd want to myself...)
I say go for it... There's 125,000 registered iPhone Developers, and far fewer iPhone app review blogs, so your odds of recognition and success are actually *better* on the blogger side! One of the more entertaining small review sites that I used to read was frapstr.com (TA forum member Mindfield ran it)... he had quite a way with words and funny commentary! Of course he was bitten by the programmer bug, and the realization that he couldn't blog full time, write apps, and have time left over for minor details like breathing. I'm a longtime fan of Zero Punctuation (even though Yahtzee has his own not-so-great opinion of fans!), so if you can pull together anything remotely as great as that I'll read it weekly. Just keep in mind that you're doing this for amusement and don't be disappointed with your readership numbers.
I've gotta say I wasn't expecting so much ... bitter negativity ... and a lot more constructive input. Especially from this, what I think to be a very good online community. Thanks for the namedrop CommanderData, I'll definitely see if I can pick his brain a bit. I'm kinda a "project guy" and who knows, I may get side tracked and lose interest and never get very far with this, but it'll be fun while it holds my attention anyway.
No no, tryouts for a-hole game reviewers won't be for some time. Nice try though. I'll keep you in mind. lol
