I've played this on a couple of different occasions now, and I'm sorry to say that I'm just not getting into it. You've done a decent job of capturing the old school feel of Space Invaders, but shooters have evolved so much since then that the game just feels stiff and slow paced. The lack of anything like power ups or barriers between you and the aliens doesn't help any either. I'd also consider a different scheme for moving the ship, at least maybe as an option to the current one. Possibly employ tilt moving or something. The problem right now is that you can't effectively use your ship on the left side of the screen, because the finger you're using to control the ship blocks the ship and you can't see when a bullet is about to hit it. Not a lot to say about the graphics, since most of them come from Ari Feldman's sprite pack. I will say that I'd almost rather see poorly drawn unique visuals than Ari's work again. Not that I have anything against his sprites, but they pop up in so many games that they aren't very interesting any more. I do really like the splash screen, though. It has kind of a 50s Flash Gordon feel about it. I'm really liking the music. Kevin MacLeod does some awesome work, and this song fits your game so well. I decided to just post this here because honestly I don't think I could give you much more than 2 stars at this point, and I didn't want to post a less than positive review on iTunes unless you really want me to. I do appreciate the code, though, and I think with some work this could be interesting. Right now it just feels too ordinary.
I've had mixed reviews about it so far, while there are some power ups sprinked throughout the game (you always get a shield or double speed shots on stage 4) the goal I was going for was a high score challenge for more casual gamers than a high speed action shooters for hard core gamers. Though I do apreciate any comments, and I really apreciate your review. I do have an update that will be going to apple that does address issues such as movement, more power-ups, barriers, more challenging enemies, etc... So hopefully with the advice I have recieved from the players update 1.1 will make more hard core gamers happy. So once that goes through I will post more codes for you guys. I apreciate any advice you guys have and let me know if there is anything else you would like to see in update 1.1
I played the update, and it's definitely better. I like the barriers and the double speed power up was cool. I also like the fact that you can now use the tilt to control your ship, though it does seem a bit choppy as far as movement is concerned. I would say the next step would be to add the ability to jump to a higher level at the start of the game. Maybe you could jump to any completed level, or at least within increments of 5 (ie: 1, 6, 11...). The game is nicely paced for newcomers, but for those of us that have been playing this type of game for a long time, the beginning is a bit slow.
