Ya know. I didn't like Fallout 3 either. I loved Star Wars KOTOR and Oblivion, but Fallout 3 just didn't click with me. I didn't like the combat one bit, VATS was alright, but the general 'feel' of the gun was off from the Cods and Halos. Plus I didn't like how there was only one 'real' city I could explore. The rest were just overrun piles of shit sidequests.

But there was history behind them! I loved exploring peoples houses and finding little bits of info about the way things were before the blast. The same goes for the school, the Nuka-Cola factory, the museum, etc... Plus the vaults were fascinating. If you treat it like an FPS then yeah, there's absolutely nothing there, but once you start reading the letters you find and all the terminals there's a ton of interesting interweaving history there and it makes the place feel alive despite being deserted. I thought it was quite powerful entering that house in... uh... the town with all the landmines... and seeing the two skeletons lying on the bed holding each other. There are literally hundreds of little visual clues like that in the game and when you start to notice them it's really quite entertaining.

As for the combat, I used VATS nearly all of the time, the only time I didn't was in emergencies and while waiting for the AP to fill up.

I did notice those letters and stuff. Like mail from the vaults in springsomething.

The thing I've noticed when playing RPGs is that I always feel...scared when going to some place I don't know about. Like the empty streets and body parts chained to the wall around the supermarket just told me "don't even bother". Plus, I'm not used to dealing with limited amounts of ammo, so I tried avoiding fighting as much as possible.

VATS? I never used them until I broke into that robot's shop in Megaton (kinda had to then). Feels cheap if I hit them. Frustrates me if I miss.

I agree completely, that's why I couldn't get into it, even though I enjoyed most parts of the game.

That's why I play Mass Effect instead =D

    Perv, why do you care?
What worked for me on Halo:CE is I never told my parents they didn't buy it. My friend "lent it" to me & I never returned it.

And if I wanted to buy a bad game, always easiest to convince Dad.

"Hey this game is rated M."
    "What for?"
    "Violence."
"Ok, maybe I'll play it some."

... 'cuz this is were people in their 50s experiencing mid-life crises come to?

But anyways, there're some games that I know for a fact I just won't like. It's happened with console games, and with AppStore games. Especially all the hyped up ones. As great as Fallout 3 may be, just something about it is off putting, even though RAGE shares the same setting as it looks fantastic. Maybe because it's not as gritty and depressing. I need a bright, colorful game, as ridiculous as that sounds. Something like Bulletstorm, maybe.

Is mass effect a small enough dropoff from fallout 3. Because it seems easier to convince them of mass effect. Btw, the thing I like most in RPGs is the story, and reason I want fallout 3 is because the story looks like my type, and the combat looks pretty cool. It blends fps and rpg and I love both of em. Anyways is mass effect any good. Can y'all rate it and fallout 3 on like a scale from 1-10 so I can see exactly how much hetter or worse fallout is? Thanks a lot

I don't know. After I turned 6 I lost track. My wife turned 23 last year, so I guess 78.

Mass Effect has the most detailed story I've ever seen in a game. All aliens have distinct personalities, religions, cultures, etc., and choosing what to do and say as Shepard (main character) is verrrry engrossing.

Haven't played Fallout 3 long enough to compare, but Mass Effect is much more linear in level design, but the story is a lot deeper IMO.

I think the main difference in stories is that Fallout 3 is more about the state of world and all thats happening, you're just a part of it. In Mass Effect, the story is all about you (sheperd).

Personally I think Mass Effect looks fantastic. The blue force power things add some more flavor to the game, making it more fun. Combat looks fun. Varied environments.

Now if only I could actually play the damn game.

Mass Effect and Fallout 3 aren't really comparable, to be honest. ME is story driven, and focuses on learning more about you and your companions in particular. There are set classes that you have to choose from, and the overall game has a set, if not completely linear, structure that you have to through.

Fallout 3, like most of Bethesda's games, focuses on complete freedom and immersion. There is no structure you have to play through, you can go off and do whatever you want. There are no classes, you distribute points into whatever you want to improve on your character. However, this sacrifices storytelling and character development.

They're both RPG shooters, but they are completely different types of RPG shooter.

I've got to admit that's a strange problem to have playing RPGs. You can't get into them because you're scared? Even I can't argue with that :p

I sort of know what you mean about the ammo, with most games it'd annoy me, but the whole appeal of Fallout 3 is you're a scavenger... it fits the role perfectly and makes sense within the world, for that reason I enjoyed it. Although after a couple of perks I ended up with more caps than I could spend, endless ammo and over 100 stimpaks by the end of the game.

I'm mixed about the whole ammo thing. I realise it's immersive and fits the whole scenario, but it does get annoying at the beginning stages of the game, where you don't have many caps/no one seems to sell enough ammo.

Eh, I think there's the mod which replaces ammo with an overheat system, like Mass Effect. People always make solutions ;).

I had the RROD once on the Xbox 360 and the yellow light of death 3 times on my PS3. Sony & Microsoft need to build better hardware in the next set of consoles...though supposedly the new slim 360 fixes the RROD problems, but I'm not spending extra money on consoles anymore. The Wii is the only one that hasn't given me any issues, but no one even touches the Wii anymore in my household.

Anways...Kinect is looking really good and something new, hopefully it'll be more fun than the overrated Wii motion gaming.
