I have a guitar that is 72 years old. Goes out of tune every 15 minutes, but it's worth it because the tone is so unbelievable. Estimated value at a couple grand-but I'm not going to sell it

Music games piss me the hell off. I had fun with the first few GH's and what not but if you strive to make a peripheral that is pretty much just like the real thing... why not just get the real f*cking thing and learn how to play it? I don't know it all just bugs me.

'Cuz most of us have an insanely short attention span. I get guitar lessons during the school year, learning technique and all that good stuff, but playing your favorite songs or any song that's actually fun to play takes a good 6 months or more of practice, depending on how fast you catch on and how difficult the song. This game'll (hopefully) help me speed up my chord changes and improve my picking technique after I've already built my foundation without using a song like Mary Had a Little Lamb. And the skills you learn are entirely transferable to an actual guitar.

Currently, the game's stlye actually hurts the way I play the guitar. I get so used to mashing some buttons, I forget where to plce my fingers for certain frets. Kind of annoying.
The joy of playing a real guitar thoguh is that....it's so much more challenging. It feels so good to practice those 6 motnhs and then finally nail all the notes in Day Tripper
Pardon the typos I'm on my iPhone

I'm talking about the new Pro guitar and what it might help me do. Not the GH and RB colored fret controllers. Those don't translate to guitar at all. And to me, Day Tripper isn't all that exciting. You can learn the riff in 5 minutes.

I guess it's different for everyone. I play the Guitar, Drums, Keys, and Bass and have been for almost 9 years now, so learning and perfecting a new song generally takes no time (I can learn a song by ear). When i first started playing GH games, I couldn't get the knack for it at all, especially when the drums came out for them. Alternate picking was a nightmare on those games, and everything just seemed to be so off beat I couldn't play the very songs I knew how to play on a real guitar or drums. So it's the total opposite for me :(

They're off-beat when you don't calibrate properly, or when you're playing on a lower difficulty and it skips half the notes. Not all of the songs are tabbed perfectly, but the majority are pretty damn accurate.

There's a ton reasons why these games appeal to people.

It's faster to learn, even for real musicians, they can play songs from other bands and genres they might not be so quick to pick up on real instruments. There have been loads of reports of bands playing these games, people who are already ridiculously skilled in their area of expertise but nonetheless enjoy the game for what it is.

You can play with anyone, children, parents, friends who don't know how to play instruments, it's a fantastic party game.

You can play drunk... obviously a lot of people play real instruments drunk too, but that doesn't sound good, GH/RB makes it easy to sound good with minimal effort. It doesn't take itself too seriously.

You can listen to music. Important point this. You may be able to pick up a guitar and strum along to <insert lame song here> in real life, but this is an instant band in a box. The drums, bass, keyboards (even a bit of brass and piano) are all filled in for you, an what's more, you get the original vocalist and band members performing the song. You could sit around listening to music on an iPod and doing nothing, or you could stand around listening to it on a game and interacting a little too. Half the reason I play RB isn't because I want to pretend I'm a rock star, it's just because I want to listen to some music.

You can compete. This is vaguely possible in real life, but not to the same extent, and certainly not over the internet.

As for the "why don't you learn a real ****ing instrument" argument we've heard countless times... some people don't want to. Maybe they don't have time. Maybe they're learning the saxophone and adding guitar would distract them from their true calling. Maybe they ARE learning how to play the guitar/bass/drums, but enjoy the game as well because they can instantly pick it up and blast out some Metallica in between practise sessions. These games haven't hurt the number of people playing real instruments at all, if anything they've inspired a lot of people to start.

...and finally, Harmonix have taken the game to a new level with Pro mode in RB3. They believe it's the bridge between merely playing a game and learning a real instrument. So it's not as though they're providing a game as an alternative to having real talent, they're providing it as an addition, and hopefully something that'll give people at least the key skills to start learning. They WANT people to play RB and then pick up a real guitar.

All valid points. I am just, sadly, very closed minded about the music game genre. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy playing the games when I had them. They are fun, I just get so much more enjoyment out of playing in my real band is all. I am not hating on anyone who enjoys the games though at all. To each his own, I just have preferences is all.

It's all good. I didn't mean for it to be quite as big a rant as that, the points just kept occurring to me the more I wrote :p

That's weird, I use the GHWT guitar on Beatles Rockband but haven't noticed that. And I'm pretty sure I definitely would have noticed that.

So I paid a visit to my neighbor's house today, and after three bald guys with gang tats left (surprisingly they were all very nice), I talked to my friend.

He had already sold Borderland, and didn't want to sell RDR for $20, so I traded him a couple old games that I NEVER play anymore (GoW 1&2, Lost Planet, Guitar Hero 3 and Madden 10 -- Lol) and got RDR. Then, I sold my CoD: Modern Warfare 2 for $55.

    :)

I'm a happy guy right now.

Day Tripper is easy to learn, but I find myself playing it every day-it sounds So good.
Don't Stop Believin has an unbelievably tough solo that I am struggling with

He must have been on some serious shit if he shelled out 55 bucks for MW2.
Still-that trade is not very good. All those games you gave are excellent games-for only one really good one......IDK if that was wise. Still, congrats on getting 55 bucks out of that chump

Well this is my reasoning: Last time I played GoW: 2008. Last time I played GoW 2: As soon as I beat the campaign since the multiplayer was crap. Guitar Hero 3? I have Guitar Hero: World Tour, and Madden 10? I have Madden 11 preordered at my local Gamestop.

Plus, I checked on Gamestop and I woulda only been able to get $10 for GoW 2, and less for every game under that, so...

Hm. Then that seems very fair, for both you and him (he gets some classic, you get a great game for games you are never going to play again).
Kind of a shame though that you lost your interest in GoW so quickly....to each his own though

GoW 2 multiplayer sucked. GoW 1 Multiplayer was epic. I'm awaiting GoW 3 eagerly...

I am goin to get 3 and I will probably enjoy it, but I am not that excited for it. Story premise seems kind of odd... but I don't know. Hopfully the Multiplayer will be better, but I am not expecting it to be.

Or that someone swoops in to steal your kill when you're 2 shots away from finishing a down enemy.
