After playing (yes, PLAYING ^_^) the game for several hours, I can say that the game is about 1/3 gameplay, 1/3 character customization (it's easily explained in-game, but I'm also adding in time spent shopping, you'll want to do that to min/max your characters) and 1/3 story dialogue. I'd call that an even balance overall, which is nice sometimes. There are games that just dump you into a game world with barely any explanation of what to do or where to go. TWEWY doesn't do that. TWEWY sets up the world, the conflict and the situation the characters are forced to deal with, and allows players to adjust to the game. It's like comparing the opening moments of Skyrim and Morrowind. In Morrowind, you're released unceremoniously in a village with the barest hint of where to go and what to do, with only the foggiest idea of how to do half the things you'll most likely need to do in order to make full use of the game's mechanics. Sure, this is immersive and all; but it's VERY intimidating for new players who are just beginning to figure out how to play the game. Contrast this with Skyrim. In Skyrim, you can't do a darn thing when a new game is started. There's no meaningful interaction with the game... at FIRST. But as the cart carrying you and your fellow prisoners is pulled to the inevitable chopping block, you can take in the surroundings, overhear meaningful tidbits of the lore of the game, see NPCs reacting to you. Then, slowly, mechanics begin to be introduced: walking, running, combat, magic, NPCS interactions, etc.... By the time you've fully escaped the dragon attack and are given full reign to do whatever you wish, you're armed and ready to explore Skyrim's world. If Skyrim didn't hold the player's hand through those core mechanics AT THE VERY BEGINNING, then the player wouldn't be as invested in Skyrim than they would be otherwise, BECAUSE THEY WOULD HAVE TO FIGURE OUT THEMSELVES HOW TO FREAKING PLAY THE GAME. Now I'm sure you're thinking: Are gamers so dumb that they CAN'T figure out how to play games without a hand to hold them? Sure, they CAN figure out such a thing; but SHOULD THAT BE THE NORM? No. It shouldn't. Because it wastes players' time trying to figure out unexplained mechanics and how they MIGHT work, but wait, they ACTUALLY DON'T WORK THAT WAY, so alright, maybe this wayNOPE, THAT DOESN'T WORK EITHER, etc.... In essence, instead of having fun, players should be FORCED to come up with their own User's Manual, WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT BE ACCURATE?! Seems a little flawed there in terms of a fun experience, when one thinks about it. And no, nobody should HAVE to go to a wiki to have fun with a game. It SHOULD BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN ITS OWN MECHANICS. TWEWY is a complex game that has about 1% in common with Final Fantasy. It does SO MANY THINGS differently from other games in the action RPG genre, with an aesthetic vastly different from the majority of games currently on iOS. If TWEWY unceremoniously dumped players into Shibuya without explaining ANYTHING, or helping players actually UNDERSTAND the core gameplay mechanics, the fleshed-out characters, and the main central conflict, in a meaningful way that tied those mechanics to the story and setting of TWEWY, then TWEWY would SUXXORZ. Hard. But TWEWY doesn't do that. Essentially, my TL;DR: TWEWY uses dialogue and story to set up the actual gameplay, to give it context that would have been much, MUCH harder to establish if players had to PLAY those segments. If you've seen the first 25 minutes and given up on the game, I would like to say this: YOU'RE MISSING THE POINT. Those first 25 minutes tell you who the characters are, WHERE they are, WHAT they're doing, and WHY they're doing it. Later segments REALLY buckle down in the gameplay, BECAUSE THE CONTEXT FOR THAT GAMEPLAY IS SO FIRMLY ESTABLISHED THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO WASTE BRAIN-POWER ON THOSE QUESTIONS I MENTIONED ABOVE. Thusly, you will be able to really appreciate the combat far more than if all the game was, was a pretty battle arena with a unique artistic aesthetic. There's more to a game than gameplay. As much as we LIKE playing games, WE LIKE REASONS TO PLAY BEYOND SIMPLE FUN. TWEWY satisfies this condition. Those are my thoughts. Take them however you will ^_^ Sincerely, Mr. Album
Oh, this game does have gameplay. It really does. You need to watch more footage of the game for longer, dude. Believe me, lots of fun battling and great music.
Thanks. I have to spare some space to get this installed. Another question: Is it possible to play between Japanese version and English version? And between iPhone and iPad version?
This is a really cool game. I'm on day 4 so far. Quite funny how the best games I've played on my iPhone have been ports (TWEWY, Final Fantasy Tactics WOTL, Ghost trick). Infinity blade, Real racing 2 etc are very good but cannot be compared to these ports in terms of production values.
i envy everyone who has this game lol...never played twewy eveeerrr, only heard about from the new kingdom hearts. Game looks fun.. damn squeenix not porting this to the itouch
If your device language is set to Japanese, the game will be in Japanese, but there's not an option to set it only in the app.
This port is so extremely well done, h.a.n.d. has done justice to Jupiter's work. I love the twitter integration too, even if it comes off as gimmicky. It fits right into the motif of the game!
After reading all the comments and reviews, I decided to buy this game IF nothing noteworthy comes out this week.
What's LINE? If it's a game feature that I haven't yet encountered, then I apologize. If not, clarification would be tremendously helpful.
I'm assuming you have a 3DS since you mentioned DDD. Just pick it up for DS. Should only be like $20-25.
Has anyone figured out how to add multiple items to the Twitter search field? I've tried commas and spaces but it always gives me an error.
Quick question for clarification, exactly what will I be missing out on if I do not know anyone else with the game who I can do this bluetooth trading thing with? Really want to get this (never even heard of it before a week or so ago but any game that garners this amount of attention has to have something going for it!). But, to get enough space I need to delete Horn and I am nowhere near finishing that yet.....choices, choices.
