I had 30+ hours notched up on my DS one by the time I was done. Then again, I seem to always come up with more time when I'm playing games, probably 'cos my brain runs slower now *grins* I reckon about 20 hours is a good guess for the amount of time for a first run through. According to the description on iTunes Store, there's an extra chapter and some further things to uncover if you replay the game. I think £13.99\$19.99 is reasonable for that much game play - I think the thing that most people twitch about is the fact there's no resale\second hand market available for apps; there's no way to offset the cost of a BIG purchase on an iOS app against future products when you're never going to use them again.
The story itself could last 15 hours with a normal playthrough a speed run about 5 hours I spend over 70+ hours in the DS version for maximum pin mastery
what about that other system where the DS sits idle looking for other DS's and you earn whatever that other badge point currency was called?
Alright, after reading the posts in this thread, I have a couple questions to ask. I'll start with the first one and move forward from there. My first question, and my thoughts on it: Is there anything I should worry about in regards to this port that will SEVERELY impact my enjoyment of this game? The changed combat system? I played the DS TWEWY for about ten hours before I lost the cartridge. After seeing Sanuku's video of Day One, the changes appear to be in line with the spirit of the original split-screen mechanic, even if the specifics in terms of the explicit controls differ. Therefore, I see no evidence to suggest that this new control scheme is something that will adversely affect gameplay. In essence, just because the EXACT controls are gone, IT LOOKS TO STILL PLAY LIKE TWEWY DID. If anything, the controls look to be an homage to the original gameplay style, similar to how dual-stick controls and virtual buttons on iOS give homage to the arcades/console/PC games that originated these methods. That's how I see it, unless I see rock-solid evidence to prove otherwise. .... Alright, anything else to worry about? The lock-out of iTouches? I own an iPhone 4s, so that doesn't impact me personally. I do feel the loss of others who don't have any other iDevices though. The pricing model is also a shock for those who prefer to play their games on both their iPad and iPhone, especially considering the current app store pricing mentality. But that's connected to the BUSINESS AROUND THE GAME, AND HAS NO BEARING ON THE MERITS/FLAWS OF THIS TWEWY PORT. And... that's it? That's all I can see wrong with the potential enjoyment of the game? Is THIS all that the community has brought up? No game-crippling bugs? No old art artifacts? No weird dialogue? No broken battle system? NOTHING?! Granted, I'm SURE there is something along these issues within the game. But the fact that, over 250+ posts in, and barely anybody has addressed this aspect of the above question, signals that the community might be looking at the wrong things/in the wrong place. Again, I know there are individuals who haven't fallen into this pattern, such as Sanuku. But the fact that the observed misdirection I noted above was so influential that only a rare few individuals have bucked this trend, signals to me personally, MORE THAN ANYTHING, TO IGNORE ALMOST EVERYONE IN THIS THREAD. Why? Because, if they do not help, even if they MEAN to help, then they simply waste people's time with intense emotions which only result in more emotions that build on more emotions that keep people blind to the subject of conversation because people see the emotion first and not the words so they react causing more reactions which FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU---- ....... *AHEM* Well... I believe I've said my peace in regards to that issue >_> In the end, I am the "I Am Disappoint" meme, in regards to my emotional responses. TA has always been, and continues to be, a place where iOS game impressions, news, fun times and critical analysis meet and merge into a unique experience that is rarely matched elsewhere. To see so many posts, with noted exceptions (and possibly a few others I might have missed), dedicated to at least one issue that appears to be a minor change more than anything IMHO (the above-mentioned change in controls) where extreme emotions, instead of the aforementioned impressions/analysis/news/etc... take precedence, is very disappointing to see as a result. Am I an anal twat for bringing this up? I'd like to say "no", and I will tell you my proof, as best I can. Granted, emotional responses such as my disappointment tend to do very little good overall. However, emotions are very good at quickly finding "bad things" and letting the brain know about them. Thus, they can quickly sense when something, however intangible, is wrong with a particular situation. Thusly, when I felt my disappointment, I had to ask myself: why was I feeling this disappointment? Since I felt it after reading through the thread, my brain decided that the disappointment stemmed from that particular experience, because nothing else today that I experienced produced that same response. So my brain attempted to deduce what it was about the thread that produced this reaction. While I could run a full mathematical breakdown on what my brain saw, I need to get to my second question. But before I do, I will say this: the number of posts with intense negativity without evidence to back up that negativity is sizable, especially in comparison to negative responses that DO have some evidence to back it up (such as the incompatibility of iTouch devices). In contrast, the positive responses are extremely small, and the section of those positive responses with evidence to back them up are limited to Sanuku's efforts and little else. Now, if we separate the positive/negative descriptors from the analysis, and only consider the responses with evidence and contrast it to the responses without evidence independent of positive/negative, then it becomes clear that the responses without evidence heavily outnumber the posts with evidence. What constitutes evidence? My brain defined "evidence" as a post that connected a fact and/or theory and/or truth straight from the game itself with the point the poster was trying to make, in an attempt to support the poster's own analysis of this game. Analysis means an impartial observation of the game itself independent of opinions and/or emotions. That was the criteria. As long as this was somewhere in the post, I counted it as evidence, even when the rest of the post was caught up in an emotional response/espousing of highly personal opinion. I can elaborate on this further, if the TA community wishes. But for now, I must continue with my second question: Is there anything I should worry about with regards to the fact that this is a port? I thought of a couple things, to start the conversation: I'd be playing through the same thing as before. There could be transition issues because of the change in platform, beyond the above mentioned change in battle controls. So, for the first thought: If this were a serious issue, then one thing we gamers demand heavily from the vast majority of games would be, by extension, just as serious an issue as it could be here: Replayability. Consider this: Let's say that a hypothetical gamer has played the game before, on the DS. Then, this gamer sees the announcement of the iOS port. Should the gamer be upset? This isn't a matter of "CAN he/she be upset?" This is a question of whether or not the gamer has a legitimate reason, beyond their own emotions, that holds up to logical reasoning, related to this port, to legitimately justify their upset-ness. And, to be honest, I'm not really seeing such a reason. You see, TWEWY was an uncommon game when it was released for the DS. People who retained their DS and their original copy of the game are thus a lot more lucky than people who want to play this game on that platform without having either element. Thus, this port will only serve to expand the player base, because the issue of limited copies is nonexistent. A newbie can shell out the monetary equivalent of an evening meal at Denny's to play this critically acclaimed game as close to the original as possible. Also, all evidence points to the truth that this port seeks to preserve as much as possible about the original version, while adapting it as flawlessly as possible to iOS. In a sense, it works as a "director's cut"version, by all viewed accounts of those who tried it out. Thus, there are incentives other than replayability and ease of acquisition. As a result, I see very little reason, IF ANY REASON, to worry about the transition between gaming platforms. Thusly, I would recommend to all the people who got caught up in their emotions to just buy the game and put the freaking issue to rest. Once you do, share your impressions. Those are far more influential than over 250ish posts of concentrated hate. The hate only serves to make other people hate you, and thus we forget about the game we were supposed to talk about. Because we don't get WHY, you hate. THE ONLY THING WE SEE, 9999/10000, IS THE HATE. And that's something no one wants to see. So when we see it, we hate it, as we hate the source of the hate, and thus FFFUUU-(you get the picture). So keep your attitude in check and PROVE your points. Let your logic coupled with THE GAME ITSELF stand on its own. I know that, MORE THAN ANYTHING, THAT KIND OF THING ACTUALLY HELPS OTHERS. And, believe it or not, people LIKE to see helpers, even when they're not exactly friendly. ........... Wait, did I just get sidetracked myself? ARGH XP Not to forget that I had hit "submit" by accident, and had to struggle to finish my edits. TWICE. I guess I got a little fed up as a result. I just bought the game, so I'll get some game impressions of my own up for the 4s. And, hopefully, those will be worth the $17.99. Sincerely, Mr. Album
It doesn't specify how it is done (doesn't seem like bluetooth because it doesn't ask you to turn it on) but you have to manually press a 'trade' button and I guess the other part has to start a 'trade' at their end too. It doesn't work like 3DS's streetpass like I hoped. It is only unlocked at Day 4 of the game; the Mingle and Friend options in menu. I'm disappointed about no iCloud support too. Capcom's Ghost Detective had it and you wouldn't need to worry about backing up/transferring your save when you format your phone or change to the upcoming iPhone 5. I think the in-game movie clips looks to me to be not so 'retina'. Overall, I'm enjoying the game a lot. Stacking pins with similar controls seem to unleash all the pins' attack at once making me feel powerful.
Can someone explain why I can play Infinity Blade 2 on my ipod touch 4 and I can't play this 5 years old handheld port?
Because your iPod touch probably does not have enough ram. The game clearly did NOT state it's compatible for iPod touches.
i... don't... know... yet... apart from the ipad-lockout thingy (which is a shame for an app that pricey) and the enormous file-size: is it any good for an old geezer? while watching sanuku's ingame vid, i'm feeling pretty... ahem... old?
Mind you I've always wanted to play TWEWY on DS, but never did, so I don't know how much of a difference this new Battle System makes, but by God...this game is frickin' perfect in every single way. Cool story bro time: Due to commitments, I wasn't able to go to the gym for the the last week and promised myself I wouldn't skip a single day this week...yeah, ermmm...you had to bloody pry me away from my iPhone to get my ass out of bed and go to the gym. Ended up going 3 hours later than scheduled. Seriously, I can't find a single fault with the game, and I honestly believe this is more than just $18-$20. Holy crap this shit is good!
Not sure how old old is to you, but I'm, well...old, and I thought it was one of the best games -- RPG or otherwise -- I had ever played. I played it on DS when it first released. The battle system was a little schizophrenic for me, but there's just so much to sink your teeth into with the game. Don't be scared off by the "style" of the game. Underneath, it has an incredibly deep and moving tale that you don't find in many games. I think a lot of it would go over most folks' heads. This ain't no Kingdom Hearts, let's just say that. (Of course, that too has an underlying stream of thought I think most folks might not fully grasp).
3D games have the luxury of rendering the same scene with lower resolution textures (mipmapping) in order to fit all the textures into the devices RAM. If this game only has retina assets for iphone and ipad (the artwork was redrawn), it may be too much for a particular device to handle. That doesn't mean they won't ever support lower spec devices, just that they haven't yet. Watching the day 3 video, It still looks like either the combat is clumsy or Sanuku is still finding it so. I still can't tell how the sync focus really works in the ios version, and Neku looks like he gets hit a lot. The identical file size between versions that are device locked really does seem weird. I don't mind them offering separate versions, but preventing the iphone version running on the ipad just seems greedy.
thx guys, you've got me... i'm risking my old bones this evening! if i can't handle it's l33tness, i will remorseful crawl back to "spectromancer"... watch out for the white bearded mage! (ok, ok, i'm not that old at all... but almost)
Do you really have to quote the whole post? Anyway, game plays great on an iPhone 4. Just got to Day 2, the music is freaking awesome. Still confused about the Alternating attacks to boost sync %, can anyone give an explanation on how to do it? Tap on enemy using 1 finger and?
Indeed I am wondering that too. I am on day two, and have the unlocked the PP gained from when you close the game (up to a max of 7 days) - nothing related to earning from contacting other DSes. However, from the TWEWY site, it mentions wireless trading (which was connected to that iddle sitting, so maybe there is still hope for that...) Also, I cannot turn on the Twitter communications/feed - maybe it will be unlocked at a latter stage in the game? (or it's bugged - the option is there, I just can't push the buttons to enable it...).
If one of your attacks also requires tapping on enemies, then it'll sort itself out (ie, they'll both attack, sync goes up). If you have a different style of attack (i.e., a slash-based attack), the idea is that you tap (so she makes an attack) and then slash - and you alternate between this. You can slash a couple of times before tapping again, since she sometimes can take a while for the hit to connect. Basically, keep tapping enemies while doing your regular attacks
